Our Favorite Shredded Mexican Blend Cheese: Organic Valley 3 Cheese Mexican Thick Cut Off The Block

Tillamook | “I’ll Have What They’re Having”: A Fan Documentary

The standout in this category was Organic Valley 3 Cheese Mexican, Thick Cut Off the Block, a blend of sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack, and Colby cheeses. As the bag suggests, these shreds were ultra-thick, which we noticed helped them melt super well. We preferred these over ultra-thin shreds that tended to dry out. While other shreds we tried also had a gloriously smooth, creamy texture in quesadillas, the sharpness and tanginess of the cheddar in Organic Valley stole the show.

What Is Rennet What Types Of Rennet Do You Use To Make Your Cheese

Rennet is an enzyme that helps coagulate the milk during the cheesemaking process. For the majority of our cheeses, we use a fermentation-produced rennet that has Kosher and Halal certification and is vegetarian-friendly. This rennet is used to make all of the following varieties of Tillamook cheese: Medium, Sharp, Special Reserve Extra Sharp, Kosher, and Reduced Fat Cheddar cheeses, as well as Monterey Jack, Mozzarella, Colby, Colby-Jack, Pepper-Jack, Provolone, Muenster, Swiss, and Reduced Fat Monterey. For a few of our aged white cheddar cheeses , we have historically used a traditional, bovine rennet that was not considered vegetarian. However, we have recently transitioned to exclusively use the fermentation-produced, vegetarian-friendly rennet. Please note that while we have already begun making our aged white cheddars with the veggie-friendly rennet, these cheeses are naturally aged anywhere from 60 days to 3 years, so depending on the cheese, it will take some time for the new white cheddar to reach stores. Be sure to look for our call out, contains no animal rennet on the packaging to know if it is made with vegetarian rennet.

For some people, the deciding factor between going vegan or going vegetarian is the answer to the following question: But could you give up cheese?!

Cheese and other forms of dairy are often included in vegetarian diets because they’re produced animalsthey’re not the animals themselves. Not to mention, cheese is flat out delicious, provides a decent amount of calcium, protein, and fat .

But while some cheese can absolutely be vegetarian, a lot of it technically isn’t. It all comes down to whether or not it contains a sneaky animal-derived enzyme called rennet, which is traditionally used to coagulate and solidify many types of cheese.

The good news: It’s not hard to get your hands on vegetarian cheese if you know what to look for. Here’s everything you need to know.

Tillamook Cheese Meets All Of My Strict Criteria Especially Taste

Posted by Connie | Apr 8, 2010 | Cooking and Food | 0 |

I love Tillamook cheese and have for as long as I can remember. Way back before we had kids and actually, now that I think about it before I got married , the hubby and I happened to be driving past Tillamook, Oregon, and noticed that they had tours. We were on a meandering trip down to California from Washington so we decided to take a few hours to visit.

Even back then, in the very early 80s, before most manufacturers really cared about the nutrition and quality of their products, Tillamook did. We were so impressed by the cleaniless of their operation, the openess of allowing us the consumers to peek in, and of course the taste. It was seeing the cheese and all the care taken to make it that has made me a customer for 30-years.

Now that Im taking an even closer look at my food, Im thrilled to find out that Tillamook meets almost all of my tough criteria!

Currently, all of the milk and cream used in the production of Tillamook dairy products, e.g., cheese, butter, ice cream, yogurt, and sour cream comes from cows not supplemented with artificial growth hormones.

All of our cheeses are made with a microbial/vegetable based enzymes, with the exception of Tillamook Vintage White Medium Cheddar Cheese and Tillamook Vintage White Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese, which use a traditional rennet.

Watch The Serving Size

When comparing labels, watch out for:

  • Slice vs. block. Cheeses that come sliced may look lower in calories, saturated fat, and sodium because their labels list a smaller serving than blocks or shredded cheese .
  • Skinny slices. Its not easy to tell whether really skinny slices like Kraft Slim Cut or Sargento Ultra Thin are better or worse than ordinary slices because the slims and thins labels show both a 1-slice and a 3-slice serving. It comes down to how many slices you use and whether the cheese is reduced-fat or full-fat .

Does Feta Have Rennet

Making rennet (Summary)

Traditional feta is not vegetarian, as its made using animal rennet. Traditional feta is always made with sheep or goats milk and animal rennet, and it should be listed on the ingredient list. The vegetarian ones are usually the cheaper ones, because vegetal rennet is easier and cheaper to produce than animal rennet.

Here’s What I Used In My Green Chile Queso Sauce:

  • Butter and Flour: To thicken the sauce. I use this to add creaminess to many of my sauces.
  • Vegetables and herbs: I finely chopped up onions, bell peppers, green onions, garlic, and cilantro in my handy dandy chopper like I did in the Vegetarian Mexican Casserole.
  • Seasoning: Taco seasoning .
  • Dairy: Milk and cheese! I use Tillamook Cheese . They use a vegetarian-friendly rennet. Really important to not use pre-shredded cheese here. I would cut this in cubes or freshly shred the cheese before adding to the sauce. This will avoid any stringy clumps in your queso. I am hoping to create a vegan version of this recipe really soon so keep an eye out for it!
  • Green Chili Enchilada Sauce: So, the Chuy’s boom boom sauce says it uses green chiles, tomatillos, green onions & cilantro. But I really didn’t have ALL those ingredients. What I DID have was some green chili enchilada sauce in my pantry and that’s what did the trick!

I loved eating this sauce topped over enchiladas and as a dip. You can use it with any of your favorite Mexican dishes!

I hope you love this recipe as much as we did! Don’t forget to share your feedback in the comments .

    Ep. 3 – Rennet

Youll be able to find halloumi cheese in many specialty grocers, including places like Trader Joes and Whole Foods. Natural food stores commonly carry grilling cheese, and cheese shops will likely carry halloumi as well.

Although halloumi is traditionally made in Greece, there are other versions of grilling or frying cheese that are prepared by dairy and goat farmers in the United States and Canada.

Like most other cheeses, halloumi can be enjoyed by itself or added to a range of recipes to add texture and flavor.

Halloumi: Why You Should Try This Unique Protein

    By Christine Ruggeri, CHHC

If youve browsed the cheese aisle of Trader Joes or Whole Foods lately, or any other grocery store that carries the latest food trends, you may have noticed halloumi or grilling cheese.

This unique cheese may be trending in the U.S. these days, but its been consumed in Greece for hundreds of years.

When cooked, it becomes crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside and it offers a delicious salty taste too.

Its versatile enough to add to many recipes youre already preparing at home, so consider adding some halloumi cheese for an extra boost of protein and calcium.

    Why Wouldn’t Cheese Be Vegetarian

Put simply: Any cheese containing “rennet” or “animal enzymes” to aid in coagulationaka to separate milk into solid curdsis not vegetarian.

“Rennet is an enzyme that comes from the stomach of ruminant animals like cows and goats,” says Abby Cannon, R.D., who personally follows a plant-based diet. “Because it’s obtained after slaughtering the animal, it’s not considered vegetarian. Milk or cheeses made without rennet are considered vegetarian because they can be made without harm to the animal.”

Cheeses containing animal rennet will almost always say one of the following on the ingredient list: “rennet,” “animal enzymes,” or simply “enzymes.”

What Are The Ingredients Present In Kraft Mac And Cheese

A pack of Kraft mac and cheese 7.25 oz box has the following ingredients:

    • Macaroni enriched with wheat flour, ferrous sulfate, durum flour, niacin, and vitamin B1 , vitamin B2, Folic acid, and cheese sauce mix.
    • The cheese sauce mix would contain milk fat, whey, milk protein concentrate, salt, sodium triphosphate, lactic acid, citric acid, sodium phosphate, calcium phosphate, turmeric, less than 2 percent of tapioca flour, and annatto.

Annatto is added to provide color to the cheese. Other than the animal ingredients which were taken from beef and lamb, there were no other non-vegetarian ingredients observed.

It is also important to note that the other cheese products that are produced using microbial rennet instead of animal enzymes would be labeled on the cheese so that the vegans can get an idea of whether the cheese is vegetarian or non-vegetarian.

What Makes Cheese & Dairy Products Halal

Much like The Vinegar Page, I have written this one because cheese and dairy products are the source of a lot of questions I get about whether or not some of their ingredients are derived from halal and dhabiha sources. This involves everything from hard cheeses like Parmesanto deli cheeses, sour cream, crème frâiche, buttermilk, regular milk, yogurt, and so on. I hope to address those issues below.

I dont claim to be a scholar or even a somewhat-expert on this subject, as it is complicated and ever-changing due to the nature of our modern food industry and the amount of food companies as well as how often they may change their formulas for one single product in their line of multiple food products. Wow, that was a mouthful

So, I simply hope to provide some information here that serves as a starting point for you with links to other reputable and informative sites that are dedicated to the specific issues described. I consider it a working document to be updated as things within the food industry fluctuate and change as time goes on.

    Here goes

The four areas of cheese and dairy products which derive the most questioning are: 1) enzymes 2) rennet 3) whey 4) rind

This link contains an explanation of enzymes, but for the purpose of this page, most of our focus will be on rennet, a type of enzyme from which cheese and dairy products are made.
