Can I Use Feta Cheese On My Pizza

5 Cheese Pizza

June 13, 2019 by Shrey

While we are at it talking about different cheese and if you can add them on your pizza or not, Feta cheese is one of the most popular cheese and most of the people are confused if you can add them on pizzas or not.

I believe it is a personal choice but if you ask me I do not add it to my pizza.

Not that it is bad cheese or it makes the pizza taste bad, but to me, it just does not make any difference.

There are different kinds of cheeses that are added in a pizza based on their taste and texture.

In the case of feta cheese, neither does it melt like Gouda cheese nor does it give a stringy texture like the Mozzarella cheese.

So, does it still make sense to add feta cheese in my pizza?

Well, at least for me it does not but if you are someone who fancies feta cheese and think that it can never go wrong with any dish then you are most welcome to use it.

However, if you are reading this post just to know if this is an ideal cheese for pizza then I would say NO, its not. You have way better cheeses out that that have textures that go well with pizzas and you can try them out.

What Are The Best Cheeses To Put On A Pizza

With the wide-selection of cheeses available, it can be challenging to choose which one to put on your pizza. According to an international team of scientists, you must consider the cheeses elasticity, free oil, moisture, water activity and baking temperature. Take a look below at some of the best cheeses for pizza.

Mozzarella Cheese

This is the most commonly used cheese for pizzas due to its light and creamy texture. Typically, youll see this as a the base of every cheese pizza while other pizzas like the Margherita include mozzarella.

When opting for mozzarella cheese, consider the low- and high- moisture options. High-moisture mozzarella has a shorter shelf life so it must be used same day. Because this cheese is high-moisture, youll notice the pizza is soggy in the middle which is ideal for Neapolitan pizzas. The lower- moisture option is saltier and denser in flavor than the high-moisture cheese and its easier to melt.

Also, consider the fat content. A higher fat content means the cheese will melt much easier.

Cheddar Cheese

This sharp-tasting cheese isnt commonly associated with pizza. However, this is a good addition to pizza because it doesnt blister easily but make sure you grab a sharp cheddar with an orange tint. Youll often find cheddar cheese on specialty pizzas such as chicken bacon ranch and cheeseburger pizzas.

Parmesan Cheese

Gouda Cheese

Goat Cheese

Ricotta Cheese

Cheddar Cheese On Pizza

Cheddar cheese is famous for its sharp taste. Since many people do not prefer to use cheddar cheese alone on their pizza, you can still blend this with other types of cheese as it will taste best. Cheddar is a better option for any pie because it has less elasticity that will not blister easily, unlike the mozzarella. It is also advisable to use a cheddar cheese with a deep orange tint to provide more color to your pizza.

Exceptions Where Cheese Goes On First

What cheese goes on pizza? Mozzarella is not the only ...

There are several pizza which have the cheese on first. Sicilian style pizzas put the cheese directly on the pizza crust and then the sauce goes on top. This style is common in Chicago, New York tomato pie, as well as many other parts of the USA. The idea behind this method is that the crust cooks better without the wet sauce directly on it.

The Sicilian pizza is deeper and cooked in a tray, almost like a Focaccia with toppings on. It is traditional to put the cheese on first. This helps the thick bread-like dough underneath to not become soggy.

The Best Mix Of Cheeses To Put On Your Pizza According To Science

Senior Science Editor, The Huffington Post

There’s mozzarella, cheddar, Colby — oh, and don’t forget provolone! With so many different cheeses to choose from, which type is the best to put on a pizza so that it tastes incredible, and has that gourmet look to it?

Now an international team of scientists have found the perfect combination of cheeses to use, after looking at each cheese type’s elasticity, free oil, moisture, water activity and baking temperature. After all, most pizza-lovers like when the cheese melts into a gooey goodness without too many blisters and burnt spots, right?

“Pizza browning and blistering sounds like a totally trivial question,” study co-author Dr. Bryony James, a professor of chemical and materials engineering at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, says in the YouTube video above, which was released by the Chicago-based Institute of Food Technologists. “But it’s actually dictated by a combination of composition and mechanical properties of the cheese itself.”

James and her colleagues analyzed the properties of seven different types of cheeses — mozzarella , cheddar, Colby, Edam, Emmental, Gruyere, and provolone — and how they affect these cheeses while baking.

What did the researchers find?

Another Tip For A Great Crust: A Super Hot Oven

When you get a really good pizza from a brick oven pizza place, the ovens are HOTway hotter than you can realistically get from a home oven. But the rule still stands that the hotter your oven, the crispier and more delicious your crust will be.

So, crank up your oven to 500 F or even 550 F if your oven can handle it. If you are using a pizza stone, let the stone preheat for 20 minutes so it gets nice and hot as well.

Parmesan Cheese On Pizza

Parmesan is a hard cheese that can be shaved or shredded on top of your pizza. Due to its delicate flavor and dryness, it is not advisable to blend it with other kinds of cheese and bake it in your oven. You can instead use Parmesan as a garnish on your pizza to add more flavor to it. If you are planning to cook Sicilian, Margherita, or Hawaiian pizzas, Parmesan is the best choice for you as it will help accentuate the flavor of your sauce and toppings. Provolone Cheese On Pizza

Provolone cheese, a semi-hard Italian cheese, is another answer to what cheese goes on pizza. It is the second most popular cheese to blend with other cheese. Its flavor differs depending on how long it has been aged. To achieve a sweeter flavor and creamier texture to your pizza, go for a provolone cheese that has been aged for a shorter period. However, if you want to achieve a sharper taste and dryer texture, go for the provolone cheese that has been aged for a longer period. You can also use provolone cheese as the base cheese for your Italian tomato, chicken pesto, or tomato basil pizza.

Branching Out From Mozzarella

Youve decided: Enough with the takeout! This weekend were having homemade pizza. You make your favorite cool-rise dough, one that develops flavor overnight in the refrigerator. You slow-simmer a batch of your aunts secret tomato sauce. At last, youre ready to put your pizza together, so you get out the mozzarella cheese but wait. Is mozzarella really the best cheese for pizza? Or can other varieties offer mozzarellas signature meltability, but with a richer, more complex flavor?

Lets find out.

One of lifes sublime experiences is grabbing a triangle of hot pizza and seeing melted cheese stretch itself into aromatic strands as your hand moves from pan to mouth.

Mozzarella, Americas favorite pizza cheese, is all about the ooey-gooey textural experience but how does it stack up, flavor-wise?

The block of mozzarella youd typically use is pretty plain if you ask me. Sure, its got some of the milky/tangy flavor of cheese in general, but all in all, its fairly neutral. Which isnt necessarily a bad thing: paired with spicy sausage or hot peppers, mozzarella is the perfect foil.

But what about a pizza topped with the gentle flavors of mushroom and bell pepper, or black olives and onions? Wouldnt it be nice to beef things up with a more interesting cheese all without sacrificing meltability ?

Consider meltability

What about stretchability?

Lets gather some traditional pizza cheeses and put them to the test.

How the test works

Homemade Pizza Baking Equipment

Theres only 3 crucial tools you need.

  • Stand Mixer: An electric stand mixer is preferred for making homemade pizza crust, but you dont *NEED* it. You can simply mix and knead the dough by hand.
  • Pizza Pan: Some pizza enthusiasts own pizza stones, baking stones, and pizza peels. If you have them awesome. If you dont, just use a regular pizza pan or a baking sheet.
  • Pizza Cutter: This OXO pizza cutter because its sharp, comfortable, and easy.

The Best Cheese For Pizza Is Cheaper Than You Think

“I don’t like big stupid puddles on my pizza,” shouted test kitchen manager Brad Leone, bringing up an excellent point. Soggy pizza is the worst, especially when you’re taking the time to make it at home. While most people will point to the sauce as the area of blame here, the real culprit is probably the cheese. Yeah, that fresh mozzarella you sprung for might not be the best for your dough.

Think about fresh mozzarella. It almost always comes packaged in water to preserve the softness of the cheese. That’s a lot of extra liquid, and that liquid makes its way onto your pizza, spreading across the pie when the mozzarella starts to melt. More water means more puddles, which we all know are bad for a pizza’s general health and well-being.

A combo of fresh and low-moisture mozzarella at Pizzeria Beddia makes for a legendary pie.

Leone, who is known to make cast-iron personal pizzas like it’s his day job , opts for something a little further down the mozzarella totem poll.

“Low-moisture mozzarella is what you want. It sours for a little longer and is dried to remove moisture. Whole Foods 365 brand is great, and so is Galbani,” he told us. Yeah, the plastic-wrapped stuff that feels dense enough to seriously injure someone if accidentally thrown. It’s not fancy, but if you want a puddle-free pizza, with a perfect cheese pull, it doesn’t get any better. Save that super soft fresh mozzarella for salads, sandwiches, and grains.

The Best Way To Reheat Leftover Pizza

Please, pleasedon’t microwave pizza! Eat it cold before you microwave it. If you microwave it, the crust becomes a soggy mess.

The best way to reheat pizza is in a skillet, cast iron or similar. Add a drizzle of oil over medium heat, and then add the pizza. Then cover the skillet, and cook the pizza until the cheese has melted and the crust is crispy again, about three to four minutes.

Classic Thin Crust Three Cheese Pizza

Easy homemade thin crust three cheese pizza. A classic recipe the entire family is guaranteed to love!

Book update! Im nearly done with After You. Ive enjoyed it way more than I expected to. My issue with it initially was that I loved Me Before You so much that I didnt want there to be an after. I was worried about how it would deal with the characters and relationships Id already grown to love. Im glad I waited until I could read it for free from my library downloads. BUT Im also really glad I did finally have the chance to read it. Im reserving the right to change my mind completely depending on how the ending is. The ending can absolutely make or break a book!

Annnd along the same lines I just watched the movie Me Before You. Id heard some unhappy reviews of it after it came out in theaters. I knew once it was available on DVD Id see it. I enjoyed it but like any book turned into a movie the book was SO much better. There was so much more to love about what youre reading than watching. Not to mention that so much gets left out or maybe the characters you pictured in your head, turned out to be different on screen. Still a good watch, but I went into it with fairly low expectations.

Easy homemade dough, stretched into a perfect thin crust and topped off with not one or even two but three varieties of cheese. More cheese is always a good thing.

High Moisture Mozzarella Vs Low Moisture Mozzarella

Cheese Pizza with loads of pepperoni in an appetizer dip ...

If you decided to choose mozzarella on your pizza, you could choose between low and high moisture. The main difference between the two is that high moisture mozzarellas shelf life is very short, as it has to be used within the first day of being made. In contrast, low moisture mozzarellas shelf life is much longer as it has a saltier and more dense flavor than high moisture mozzarella. The low moisture mozzarella is also advisable to be used when you would bake the pizza because it melts faster.
