Chicken And Bacon Ranch Melt

While it may sound innocent, the Subway chicken and bacon ranch melt wrap is one of the worst choices at Subway. For one, it’s a sodium bomb that gives you more than your entire daily intake of salt. alone This makes the chicken bacon ranch sandwich a highly questionable option. Registered dietitian Elizabeth Shaw told Mashed, “The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting your intake to no more than 2300 milligrams a day, and knowing you’re already over the day’s limit in one meal makes it more challenging to navigate the rest of your day.”

Additionally, the chicken bacon ranch sandwich clocks in at 850 calories per serving, accompanied by 42 grams of fat and 155 milligrams of cholesterol. Shaw notes about the sandwich, “Now, I’m not saying there aren’t great options at Subway or other fast food chains, but rather know your body, your health, and your needs before making your decision. Foods like processed meats , dressings, and breads contain large amounts of sodium.”

And Shaw has quick solutions. She says, “So, if you’re craving, say bacon and chicken, it’s not to say those foods are off limits at Subway, but rather, #simpleswap them on a salad versus a sandwich to help save a few hundred milligrams of sodium!”

Chicken Teriyaki & Chipotle Chicken

Grabbing a healthy lunch on-the-go is tough, and it turns out that even though you think you might be making good choices, that’s not always the case. If you’re trying to stay away from the high sodium content of cold cuts, Subway’s Chicken Teriyaki or Chipotle Chicken might seem like a good idea. But according to at least one Redditor and former employee, these might be a poor choice for a different reason.

Buried in the thread “Subway Q& A Ask me Anything Subway Related,” several employees and former employees talked about how the thing they absolutely avoided was anything with the chicken strips you get in these two subs. While most meat, they say, has a two-day shelf life, this chicken is an exception. This chicken has an official maximum of a four-day shelf life, but even that was just sort of a technicality. Some employees testified they were reprimanded for throwing it out on day five, and that they’d seen batches sitting for up to nine days.

Subway’s Bread Is Delicious

Subway’s NEW Macaroni and Cheese! #187

Subway is known for baking their bread fresh in store, and you can smell it before you even leave your car. With varieties like Italian, Italian herbs and cheese, 9-grain wheat, and multi-grain flatbread, there are even more ways to make your sandwich just the way you like it. Some locations even offer Jalapeno cheese and rosemary and sea salt bread variations.

The Subway bread hasn’t always been the same as it is today, back in 2014 a food blogger discovered that the bread contained a chemical called azodicarbonamide, which is also used in the creation of yoga mats. Since then, Subway has phased out this unpleasant ingredient.

Some people find the smell of the Subway bread incredibly unpleasant, where others love the smell of the fresh baking bread. Love it or hate it, it has been debunked that no, Subway does not intentionally vent the smell of the bread onto the street to attract hungry passersby. Still, we have to admit, that smell hitting you in the face as you walk in certainly does make that sandwich taste better once it’s finally in your hands.

Those Extra Veggie Toppings

Sure, it might seem like you’re doing the responsible and adult thing by getting your sub with an extra helping of vegetables, but given some insider news that came out in 2017, you might want to think twice about that or at least look carefully before you order.

Subway closed hundreds of locations in 2017, and people wanted to know what was going on. Business Insider talked to a few franchisees who spilled the beans on just why the quality of the food was slipping, and a huge part of that was their corporate-enforced vegetable deliveries. Most stores, sources said, were only allowed to get veggies deliveries once a week. If the stores were super-busy, corporate allowed them two deliveries a week.

Corporate offices wouldn’t comment on whether or not the claims were true, but franchisees say that lettuce you’re asking for may have been sitting around for days. They describe their own veggies as tasting like “shredded paper” and being “a massive problem,” so before you tell your sandwich artist to pile on the veggies, take a good look at them first.

What Cheese Does Subway Use

Subway uses a variety of different cheese types for their sandwiches, depending on what is available to them in the particular country. Subway cheese is mass-produced for them by their suppliers.

Top 4 cheeses used at Subway are:

  • Process Cheddar
  • Mozzarella
  • Feta

Processed cheddar is the default cheese at Subway. These are cheese slices, normally approximately 60% cheese and 40% other ingredients. Alternatively, the cheese slices may be a version of Swiss cheese, identified by the holes throughout the slices.

Subway may also use mozzarella. This will be pre-shredded and therefore a mass-produced cheese, rather than the fresh cheese from Italy. Mozzarella is best known for melting well and becoming gooey and stringy once heated.

Subway may also offer feta at some locations. This crumbled fresh cheese is light and salty and ideal to add fresh flavours to your sandwiches.

Some Subway stores in America and the UK may offer pepper jack cheese. This is a version of the classic Monterey Jack cheese made in the US. As the name suggests, PepperJack cheese is full of herbs and spices, such as chilli and pepper.

It’s An Interesting Dish

Subway calls its Steak & Cheese sandwich a “fan favorite.” According to the brand, the sandwich consists of Philly-style steak, onions, green peppers, and of course, plenty of gooey cheese. A standard Steak & Cheese six-inch sub will cost you 352 calories with 7.1 grams of fat, 46 grams of carbs, and the best part: 25 grams of protein. As per a review posted by Brand Eating, this sub may not blow you away, but is a reliable option nevertheless.

You can get as many veggies as you want on your sandwich, as well as play around with your preferences including the type of bread, cheese, and condiments you want to experiment with. As per the review, the steak in the sandwich isn’t bad and gets the seasoning part right. It could be juicier, though. Perhaps what can make things really good is the right kind of customization.

A Redditor even wrote about their most preferred combination while ordering a steak and cheese sandwich. “So for the cheese, pepper jack is the only right choice for steak,” they shared. “For veggies I get just green bell peppers and black olives. Then I finish it off with the chipotle southwest sauce. Delicious!” We agree.

Where Can I Purchase Subway Cheese

Of course, an ideal replica of these cheeses will not be available in the supermarkets, however, very similar cheeses can be purchased in the supermarkets.

The best comparison for processed cheese is Kraft. These burger-like cheese slices are the most similar in texture and flavour, particularly mild and salty. They come in packets of 10-20 slices and are readily available in the majority of supermarkets.

The same can be said for shredded mozzarella and feta. For example, versions of these classic Italian and Greek cheeses are available in nearly all supermarkets and will help replicate those flavours similar to your Subway favourites.

    Chicken & Bacon Ranch Melt

Lets get it out of the way: This is the unhealthiest sandwich you could order from Subway, bar none. However, there are few times when combining poultry, pork, and ranch havent resulted in something delicious. The saltiness of the bacon, the creaminess of the ranch, and heartiness of the chicken work well together, and it never gets too messy or hard to handle. Its a solid outside the cold-cut box option from Subway.

    I don’t have x… what can I use instead?

Diastatic Malt Powder? You don’t NEED it, but it won’t be the same without it. Modernist Pantry describes diastatic malt powder as “the “secret ingredient” savvy bread bakers use to promote a strong rise, great texture, and lovely brown crust“. I got mine on Amazon for a very reasonable price, but you can likely find it at specialty stores or bulk sections of a supermarket.

Active Dry Yeast? YOU CAN USE INSTANT YEAST BUT don’t swap it with an equal amount of Active Dry Yeast. Active Dry Yeast is different than Instant Yeast and I prefer Active Dry almost always.

If you only have instant yeast, substitute the amounts of diastatic yeast in the “starter” section with 2.25g of quick yeast, and substitute the “dough” section with 12.75g of quick yeast. The recipe won’t be identical but it will be close enough. I understand yeast has been hard to come across since the middle of 2020. Work with what you have.

Monterey Jack Cheese? You can use Muenster, Havarti or Gouda. Really, you can use any kind you want as long as it’s not overly strong. Different cheeses that are a different color may make the bread look different but it will still be delicious!
