The pre-Apollo management team at Chuck E. Cheese Entertainment, Inc. all resigned within a month including CEO Michael Magusiak, chairman Richard M. Similar to what occurred with the rockstar revamp, media outlets seized on the news regarding the removal of the animatronics, leading to often less than positive press and social media reactions.
As of June 2020, Chuck E. Cheese operates 612 corporate and franchise stores, as well as 122 Peter Piper Pizza restaurants. They are located in 47 states across the United States and in 16 countries and territories around the world.
A Whole New Game At Chuck E Cheese
Some four-and-a-half decades after it began, it was nearly game over for the iconic Chuck E. Cheese family entertainment centers and pizza restaurants when the COVID-19 pandemic brought parent company, CEC Entertainment, to its knees. But David McKillips, CECs charismatic CEO, helped it successfully emerge from bankruptcy. Now, he is guiding the company through the pandemic and reimagining the brand to position it for the next generation of fans.
Talk about timing. Coming on board in January 2020, McKillips had to make the difficult decision to temporarily shutter the companys 775 locations in March due to the conditions imposed by the virus. CEC couldnt withstand the impact of the closures.
Unfortunately, we didnt have the strength in our balance sheets to survive the pandemic, he says. The company filed for Chapter 11 in June 2020.
Its hard to keep a good mouse down, however. Recognizing the potency of the Chuck E. Cheese name and intellectual property, its overseers never considered abandoning the brand. Generating more than $900 million in sales in 2019, CECs fundamentals were sound.
CEC Bakes Up a New BrandWith its dining rooms and arcades closed, the first order of business was pivoting to an off-premise food model. Chuck E. Cheese is among the largest pizza companies in the world. Unlike its competitors, however, it did not have much experience in promoting or selling its product for takeout or de-livery.

In 1995, the mascot was given a more child-friendly makeover, with wider cheeks, a less pointy, shorter snout, longer eyes and smaller ears. This one was added to the restaurants in 2001.
In July 2012, the mascot was changed into a much smaller kind of the character, who played electric guitar. Voice actor Duncan Brannan, who for 19 years had made Chuck E. Cheese a wise-cracking mouse from New Jersey, was replaced with Jaret Reddick, the frontman and guitarist for the pop punk band Bowling for Soup.

The parent company of Chuck E. Cheese declared bankruptcy on Thursday, citing store closures and stay-at-home orders during the pandemic as driving factors.
CEC Entertainment, which also owns Peter Piper Pizza venues, said in a news release that it filed for Chapter 11 protection to achieve a restructuring that supports its re-opening and longer-term strategic plans.
The company signaled no immediate plans to close any of its 612 Chuck E. Cheese locations a favorite destination for childhood birthdays or its 122 Peter Piper Pizza restaurants in four-dozen states. CEC has reopened about half of its 555 company-operated venues since states began lifting coronavirus shutdown orders and said it will continue offering dine-in, delivery and carryout services and hosting birthday parties during specific hours, as well as reopen more locations.

This is a rather dramatic story for a fake mouse and seriously pulls at the heartstrings.

In 1977, while at Atari, Bushnell purchased Pizza Time Theatre back from Warner Communications. It had been created by Bushnell, originally as a place where kids could go and eat pizza and play video games, which would therefore function as a distribution channel for Atari games. Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatre also had animatronic animals that played music as entertainment. It is known that Bushnell had always wanted to work for Walt Disney, but was continually turned down for employment when he was first starting out after graduation Chuck E. Cheese was his homage to Disney and the technology developed there. In 1981 Bushnell turned over day-to-day food operations of Chuck E. Cheese’s to a newly hired restaurant executive and focused on Catalyst Technologies.
Through 1981 and 1982, Bushnell concentrated on PTT subsidiaries Sente Technologies and Kadabrascope. Sente was a reentry into the coin-operated game business.
