The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board has reported that UK cheese exports have increased by 25% annually in Q2 of 2022, primarily due to changes in EU trade, which is also up for H1 2022.

The EU remains the biggest market for British cheese producers, and trade with France and Sweden has reached above pre-Brexit levels according to the data.

But other markets where UK cheese is typically popular, such as Denmark, Germany and Spain, are yet to return to pre-Brexit levels, the analysis concludes.

AHDB analyst Charlotte Forkes-Rees reflected: Despite the improvement in trade so far this year, total cheese exports may be slow to return to levels seen pre-Brexit. Trade in 2021 was abnormally low due to the uncertainties and added trade friction associated with the UK leaving the EU. Whilst most traders have now adapted to most of these barriers, the average price per tonne for cheese has seen a 15% increase in comparison to prices seen in Q2 2021. This increase in price may impact trade for the remainder of the year, particularly with the cost-of-living challenges facing consumers.”

Vegan Mac & Cheese Throwdown

We eat a whole lot of mac and cheese in this house and while having little ones could be my excuse its really just because we simply love mac and cheese. I have probably made about 40 different versions of mac and cheese that ranged from amazing to absolutely dreadful.

The thing that we dont often have though is boxed mac and cheese so I have decided that I want to try them all. I mean who else grew up on Velveeta Shells and Cheese or Kraft Mac and Cheese or if you were so lucky to grow up in Canada like my hubby you would have had Kraft Dinner which is completely different that Kraft Mac and Cheese. I am on a mission to find the best boxed vegan mac and cheese out there because frankly I think it will be fun.

For this first round I went with two that I didnt even know existed until the other day at Whole Foods. The first is Annies Homegrown organic and gluten free elbows with a creamy sauce.

Ingredients required: non-dairy milk and optional non-dairy buttery spread

Cook time: Pasta was supposed to cook in 8-10 minutes but really took closer to 12.

Texture & Consistency of Pasta: chewy and slimy and not what I would describe as elbows.

Close but the photo on the box shows off more flexible noodles and a thicker sauce

Taste: sweet, funky, disgusting

In order to choose the best eating plan, you need to know you have lactose intolerance or a milk allergy. If you or your child are allergic to dairy or parts of milk like casein or whey, then steer clear from lactose-free products and stick to those that are labeled dairy-free or vegan. It is important that you become familiar with dairy-derived ingredients so you know which products are safe for you and your loved ones. If you or your kid has been diagnosed with lactose intolerance, then simply look for the lactose-free label.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there are also differences between the terms dairy-free and non-dairy. Dairy-free is not a term regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration it is an industry and marketing term. Non-dairy is the regulated term and it actually allows for the presence of milk protein such as casein, whey, and other derivatives. If you have a milk allergy, non-dairy products may not be safe.

If you are following a vegan diet, you will not consume any dairy products, whether or not they are labeled as lactose-free because dairy products come from animals.
