What Will The Us Government Do With 14 Billion Pounds Of Cheese

How Government Cheese Became Welfare For Farmers

The United States dairy surplus has reached a record high, rounding out at 1.4 billion pounds of cheese. Reports attempting to quantify this astonishing amount have deferred to metrics like enough to wrap around the U.S. Capitol. Suffice to say, nobodys suggesting we could consume it all.

The nation eating this much cheese is not only mind-boggling: Its growing less and less likely. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture data, Americans have cut their milk consumption down from 35 pounds to an average of 15 per person annually. The excess is turned into cheese for storage and longevity . At the same time, government subsidies have continued to support dairy production, buying up surplus to keep prices steady. That leaves us with more cheese than anyone, even the experts, knows what to do with.

What has changedand changed fairly noticeably and fairly recentlyis people are turning away from processed cheese, Cornell University agriculture economist Andrew Novakovic said in an interview with NPR. Its the same as it is for everything else: If youve got too much of something, the price has to go down until consumption rises.

In the past, the U.S. government has supported dairy farmers through various programs and agencies, accumulating a staggering surplus with policies unique to this industry. What its done with that surplus has changed the American welfare state and diet forever.

The Return Of Government Cheese Canned Beef And Stigmatizing The Poor

Most people under the age 50 will not recall what was once known in the Black community as government cheese. The cheese was given to low-income citizens across the United States as part of a program with the USDA. Also distributed were items such as powdered milk, butter, long shelf life canned food and a few staples. Food distribution has been tried off and on for decades as a way to supplement diets and evolved into programs such as SNAP in the U.S. If Trump has his way, America may soon see a return to the days of government cheese.

Under a new proposal announced on Monday, Feb. 12, low-income Americans who receive at least $90 a month in SNAP benefits will get half of their benefits in the form of a USDA foods package. This change impacts 80 percent of individuals and families who are currently receiving benefits and is planned to take place in 2019 if the Trump budget passes. The package will reportedly include shelf-stable milk, ready-to-eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit and vegetables. The package will not contain any fresh fruits or vegetables. White House budget director Mick Mulvaney called it a food box program similar to a home delivery service like Blue Apron and stated I dont want to steal somebodys copyright. You actually receive the food instead of receiving the cash.

What Do You Look For When Buying Cheese Online

Lifespan

In general, cheesemongers will advise you to order less cheese more often, rather than stocking up, but sometimes we go overboard. Should you be buying in bulk, make sure to eat softer cheeses, like Brie and burrata, first. The harder cheeses, like parmesan and cheddar, can last months in your fridge as opposed to a few weeks for the softer stuff.

Storage

Your cheese will likely come packaged in butcher paperand thats where it should remain. Plastic wrap will suffocate cheese and impart unpleasant flavors.

Assortment

Many shops offer assortment boxes that make a lovely cheese plate. Should you be curating your own cheese board selection, stick to a range of milk types and textures. An old cheesemonger saying is something old , something new , something stinky, something blue.

Steve Harvey on Government Cheese

As officials scrambled behind the scenes to figure out how to deal with the cheese, the cheesy conundrum became public when Agriculture Secretary John R. Block showed up at a White House event with a five-pound block of greening, moldy cheese and showed it to the press. Weve got 60 million of these that the government owns, he said. Its moldy, its deteriorating we cant find a market for it, we cant sell it, and were looking to try to give some of it away.

As the public got wind of the existence of all that surplus cheese, it began to sharply criticize President Ronald Reagan. He had been elected in part by bandying about inaccurate stereotypes of welfare queens and poor people who gamed the system, and earlier in 1981 had pledged to reduce the federal food stamp program. There were hungry Americans still suffering from the aftereffects of the recession. Why not give them the cheese?

In December 1981, Reagan relented. At a time when American families are under increasing financial pressure, their government cannot sit by and watch millions of pounds of food turn to waste, he said in a public address. As a result, he said, hed free 30 million pounds of cheese from the countrys stockpile. He created the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program, which began handing out the blocks of processed cheese to the elderly, low-income people and organizations that served them.

How The Us Ended Up With Warehouses Full Of ‘government Cheese’

  • Original: Jul 26, 2018

In the early 1980s, the U.S. government distributed some 300 million pounds of pungent-smelling processed cheese that had been produced with federal funds.

If youve ever tasted whats known as government cheese, you wont soon forget it. Its flavor was described as somewhere between Velveeta and American cheese and smacked of humiliation or gratitude for the people who couldnt afford not to eat it. Its color, a pale orange, was eye-catching. And it came in iconic stacks of five-pound blocks that made it immediately clear it wasnt your standard cheddar or Camembert.

The cheese, distributed by a federal program during a time of volatile milk production in the 1980s recession, is iconic to this day, forming fraught memories among those who had to eat it and those who never got a taste.

The cheesy story all started in 1949, when the Agricultural Act of 1949 gave the Commodity Credit Corporation, a government-owned corporation dedicated to stabilizing farm incomes, the authority to purchase dairy products like cheese from farmers. The CCC had been around since the Great Depression, when it was created as part of the New Deals attempt to stabilize prices and help farmers.

Butter and cheese being stacked and distributed during a surplus of dairy products, circa 1983.

  • Research The Types Of Govt Contracts Available:

Before registering on the government databases, you should research what types of contracts you may bid on. Small businesses may bid on set-aside contracts.

There are 2 types of contracts. You might be eligible for bidding on competitive set-asides and sole-source set-asides contracts. The first type applies when more than one small business can perform the job.

Competitive set-asides are also applied automatically when the government contract is for 150,000 dollars or less. In contrast, sole-source set-asides are contracts where only one company may meet the requirements.

These contracts are issued without any competitive bidding. You may consider getting your business certified as a veteran, minority, women-owned or any other applicable business certification. These certifications might give your business an advantage in the bidding process.

I went to college in Wisconsin in the late 80s and during that time the state gave away cheese to people on welfare. Some friends of mine had some and I I remember it was a lot of cheese that came packaged in a box kinda like velveeta is packaged in only much larger. They told me that they had to wait in a really long line to pick it up. I dont know if the program is still active at this point.

From the article /u/escapefromtexas posted: Once the dairy program was pulled and the food stamp program switched over to Link cards, Government Cheese was taken off the market.

is that a brand name cheese? or cheese from the us government?

Cheese from the US Government, but I believe its been discontinued in favor of other programs like TANF and SNAP. Until the 90s or so, the government would buy and stockpile cheese to support/prop up the dairy industry, then theyd process that cheese into government cheese which was distributed to the poor. It was somewhat similar to Velveeta but would be made with random cheeses so the taste varied.
