An authentic Philly cheesesteak recipe combines the right ingredients and the right technique. Heres what to do:

  • Split a soft hoagie roll most of the way through.
  • Fry diced onions in a skillet until translucent and lightly browned.
  • Add the thinly-sliced ribeye steak. Season and cook in the pan.
  • Layer cheese on top of the steak and onions. Lay a split hoagie roll on top of the steak, then flip right side up onto a plate.
  • Cook Your Grilled Cheese In The Oven Instead Of In A Pan

    If you want your grilled cheese to be uniformly crispy and you dont want to stand at the stove waiting for each side to cook perfectly, cook it in the oven instead!

    Its even easier and I think it results in a way better sandwich.

    The right temperature will depend on the type of bread youre using, how much cheese youre using, and how hot your oven is!

    I usually use plain white bread for grilled cheese and I bake my grilled cheese at 450F for about 4-5 minutes on each side.

    I usually start checking it after three minutes and make sure its not getting too crispy. Once it looks how I want it, I flip it over and cook for about the same amount of other time!

    So easy!

    If you havent tried making it in the oven before, play around with the temperature/time a bit until you find out what works for you! It might also be different for you depending on how cooked you want your sandwich to besome like it crispy and some prefer it on the softer side!

    Now lets get to the good stuff

    The Secret Ingredient For The Best Grilled Cheese

    My cheesemonger friend got me onto using mayonnaise instead of butter.

    Its always spreadable, it gives you a fabulous golden-brown crust thats not as apt to burn as butter, and it offers just a little zip.

    My favorite brands are Hellmanns/Best Foods and Dukes. I havent tried Miracle Whip , but I figure its too sweet to work well here. You can also make your own mayoits actually just as easy as making a grilled cheese!

    Give mayonnaise a shot! Use the same amount as you would butter.

    If you are 100 percent Team Butter, I understand. You can either butter the bread directly or melt a pat of butter in the pan. I prefer to butter the bread directly, but lets say your butter is straight from the fridge and rock-hard. In that case, melt it in the pan.

    One of my colleagues here at Simply Recipes swears by this approach and uses it in his Italian Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.

    You should never use a microwave for defrosting shrimp, nor leave them to thaw on the kitchen counter at room temperature. The best way to defrost frozen shrimp is in a colander in the refrigerator overnight. The next best way is to seal them tightly in a Ziploc bag with all the air pressed out and then run cold water over the bag for five to 10 minutes. Dont use warm or hot water, and dont run water over them without the bag, or the shrimp will soak up water and turn soggy.   • Fry: Place in the basket of an air fryer and 360 degrees and fry for 5 min. Flip and fry for another 5 minutes.

    American cheese, deli provolone, or Cheez Whiz are the only acceptable cheese options for a real cheesesteak. I recommend white American cheese.

    If you use provolone, use the soft deli kind. Avoid aged provolone, which tastes too strong and does not melt as well.

      There are two types of grilled cheeses in this world. First, theres the kind you make when you come home at 3 A.M. after a bit too much to drink, when all rules fly out the window and pretty much anything tastes deliciousincluding burnt bread surrounding unmelted cheese.

      And then theres the grilled cheese you should be making at all other times: perfectly golden-brown bread, melty cheese, supreme satisfaction. To get this sort of sandwich, the rules are strict but justified. Because when it comes to something so simple, there’s not a ton of wiggle room between perfect sandwich creation and sub-par, time-of-desperation snack.

      This is where we come in. Look no further for the rules of perfect grilled cheese.

      Two things can happen if you rush the grilled-cheese-making process. In one scenario, you quite literally take the sandwich off the of the pan before the bread reaches a deep golden-brown. You may be hungry and tired, but accept that it takes a bit of time to get optimally toasted bread. Were also not that sorry, because it doesnt take too much time .

      You’ve done it! Now eat it. I ate mine with sea salt and vinegar chips and a drink I make with milk and diet Polar cream soda.
