The 15 Meatiest Vegan Meat Substitutesfrom Impossible To Beyond

Vegan cheese options existed, but the texture was wrong. The rice milk cheese I could find at a local health food store was the texture of rubber. Soy cheese was a little better, but still plastic-like. More importantly, the cheeses didnt melt. When I put them onto a pizza, theyd become warm but unaltered in shape. They tasted OK in a grilled cheeseafter all, their flavor wasnt very different from that of processed dairy cheeses. But there was no gooeyness, no stretch.

How Is Vegan Cheese Made

Vegan cheese is made using a process that starts similar to traditional cheese but without dairy milk.

The plant proteins are separated from bacteria and then ingredients like oils and thickeners are added to create the desired cheeselike consistency.

Akin to traditional cheese, the vegan cheese is left to ferment, allowing the vegetable protein and bacteria to break down and form flavors that are unique and close to traditional cheese.

The 10 Best Vegan Cheeses That Taste Like the Real Thing

With so many options to choose from, we decided to gather our editorial team to taste all the dairy-free cheeses and give us their honest opinions. The task was brutal, and many complained of indigestion afterwards, but when it was all said and done we found some true winners.

Kite Hill Chive Cream Cheese

Described as “easy to confuse with real cream cheese” by our tasters, this herby variety was a favorite of the entire taste test. Bright chives and earthy white pepper combine with the mild almond flavor to create a creamy spread that could amp up bagels or veggie dip.

Runners-up:

Kite Hill Jalapeño Cream Cheese

The incredibly smooth texture of this plant-based cream cheese had our tasters double-checking the ingredients list to see what could make such a creamy, dairy-free product . The jalapeño flavor is strong enough to give a mild spice level at the back of your throat, but not so overwhelming that it singes your tastebuds. Tasters said they would love this in a Tex-Mex dip with tortilla chips.

Kite Hill Ricotta

“Well it sure looks like ricotta!” was the first comment from tasters when opening this cheese’s packaging. And as a bonus, it tastes like ricotta too! With a silky texture and tangy taste, this vegan product remarkably mimicked the popular cheese. Tasters said it could easily be mistaken for part-skim ricotta and would be great in a lasagna or tossed with pasta.

Delicious And Healthy Vegan Cheese Brands That Will Satisfy Your Dairy Cravings

Most people find that giving up cheese is the hardest thing to do when switching to a vegan diet. Will you have to say goodbye to the taste of cheese forever? Actually, no, you wont. In this article, youll discover 9 delicious and healthy vegan cheese brands that will satisfy your dairy cravings.

The truth is theres a huge variety of vegan cheeses out there. Some of them are so good that you wont be able to tell the difference from the real thing.

But what is vegan cheese, anyway?

As you know, traditional cheese is a dairy product and is made from milk. But vegan cheese is entirely plant-based and is usually made from either nuts, coconut oil, soy protein and other ingredients.

Most of the times, the key ingredient that makes a vegan cheese taste like traditional cheese is nutritional yeast. In a nutshell, nutritional yeast is deactivated yeast. Its totally vegan and, yes, it tastes like cheese! You can find nutritional yeast in most health food stores sold in a form of flakes or powder.

Also, its possible to make fermented vegan cheeses by adding probiotics or rejuvelac . Fermented nut cheeses are good for your digestive system because they contain beneficial bacteria and active enzymes.

If the inspiration hits, you can make your own vegan cheese. One of the quickest and easiest ways is making a vegan parmesan which requires only 4 ingredients and is great for sprinkling on pizzas, toasts, salads or pasta.

However, the brand quickly got off that train and started using non-hydrogenated alternatives a move that saw its popularity go back up.
