Can You Make Mushroom Ham And Cheese Pockets Without Yeast
Yes! There are several ways that you can modify this recipe if you dont have yeast to make a true dough. My favorite way is to use this combination of self-rising flour and Greek yogurt:
- 2 cups self-rising flour
- 1 1/3 cups plain Greek yogurt
Just mix that together and knead it well several times. Then roll it out just like you would a normal dough. It will be a little harder to work with than a traditional yeast-dough, doesnt look quite as pretty, and may crisp up a bit more but it still tastes delicious!
I hope you enjoy these mushroom ham and cheese pockets as much as we do at my house! Theyre perfect for an easy breakfast to fuel your day, or a quick lunch to pair with a side salad. If you try em out, be sure to leave a rating and let me know what you think.

HOT POCKETS ARE OLD FASHIONED MEAT PASTRIES
I raised my kids on easy gourmet food and great books! Oftentimes, the books we read shaped the foods I felt like cooking. Weve read aloud from the 19th century Little House books or loved Medieval books like Goose Girl wherein pastries wrapped around meat are the daily fare.
Our family loves nothing more than savory meat pastries!
So for me, this recipe is a fun way to bring together a Keto copycat Hot Pocket and old world meat and cheese inside buttery pastry dough!

Add your meat, cheese, and mustard, then brush a whisked egg on the edges of half the square so you can fold it over and seal the dough together.

Ham And Swiss On Whole Wheat
Sandwiches are easy to make and are portable. Try a ham and Swiss on whole wheat the next time you need a quick meal or snack, but you dont have time to cook.
Last week, I shocked a female athlete when I suggested she pack a sandwich for dinner. Yes, a sandwich complete with whole wheat bread, salty ham, full-fat cheese, vegetables and even light mayonnaise.
Like many of you, the client that Im referring to is busy. She has a part-time job in the evenings and packs her dinner as a way to choose healthier options. Like many clients that I see these days, she thought that sandwiches were off limits. Her questions
- Isnt bread bad for you?
- Doesnt lunch meat have too much sodium and additives?
- Doesnt dairy cause acne?
Are Sandwiches Healthy?
We spent much of the appointment discussing food myths, nutrition misinformation and some truth, too. Sure, sandwich meat is high in sodium but that doesnt mean its off limits. The amount of a food that you eat is makes the difference. And, bread bad? Im certainly not recommending you eat the entire loaf in one sitting. Im suggesting a sandwich- two slices. Maybe a triple-decker for my growing male athletes playing high-energy sports. Todays stores are filled with different varieties of bread find one that fits your needs, and stuff it with lean protein and veggies. The result is a balanced meal.
How To Cut Sandwich Calories
With just a few tweaks and healthy swaps, you can create a nutritious and healthy sandwich that is lower in calories but still full of flavor and lasting satisfaction.
Choose Low-Calorie Sandwich Bread
Delicious, thick, crusty bread, bagels, baguettes, croissants, and hearty rolls can be full of fat and calories. These choices might also boost your starchy carb intake for the day. Instead, choose a whole grain bread or bread alternative that has additional nutrient benefits such as healthy fats or fiber. If you are eating a heartier bread, consider making an open-faced sandwich and keeping your portion to one slice.
- Arnold Bakery Light – 100% Whole Wheat Bread: 60 calories per slice
- Nature’s Own Wheat Bread: 110 calories for two slices
- Pepperidge Farm Light Style Bread: 45 calories per slice
- Joseph’s Flax, Oat Bran, and Whole Wheat Flour Pita Bread: 60 calories per pita
- La Tortilla Factory Low Carb, High Fiber Tortillas: 50 calories per tortilla
If you prefer a more natural approach, try making a sandwich with no bread at all. Wrap your healthy sandwich filling in bibb lettuce or make a sandwich using a peeled and seeded cucumber as the shell. And there are other options such as cauliflower wraps, brown rice wraps, homemade chickpea wraps, sweet potato, or flax wraps.
Choose Leaner Sandwich Fillings
Once you’ve chosen your healthy bread, you’ll build your sandwich around a meat or meat-free filling. Get creative and combine different choices to find new flavors.

1.) Place the mozzarella in a heat proof bowl and heat in the microwave on high for 60 seconds. Stir and heat for a further 20 30 seconds until fully melted. Careful not to burn.
2.) Add the sunflower seed or sesame seed flour and mix with a spatula to combine into a ball. If the dough gets too cold at any point simply pop back in the microwave for 30 seconds to warm.
3.) Roll the dough between two sheets of greaseproof paper or a silicone mat and a sheet of greaseproof into an oblong shape.
4.) Place the ham in the centre and top with cheese and mustard. .
Tip: If you use thin ham you can roll it up instead of placing it flat onto the dough. This way your pockets end up thicker and fluffier. You can also use grated cheese instead of cheese slices. This is what I did when I made the recipe the second time around.
5.) Fold the edges of the dough over to form a pocket. Turn the pocket over so the seal is at the bottom. Piece two tiny air holes in the top with a sharp knife. Not too big or the cheese will escape! Bake in the oven for around 12-15 minutes until golden on top.
