Vegan Cheese Taste Test – Picking the BEST Vegan CHEDDAR

Compared to dairy cheese, vegan cheese offers the same great taste without the saturated fat, caseins, and growth hormones.

That said, non-dairy cheese is not always lower in calories than real cheese. Vegan alternatives made with coconut oil, whole cashew milk, and other fat-heavy ingredients are comparable to dairy cheese in terms of total calories. But other options, like those made with oat milk and beans, do tend to be a little lighter on the calorie scale.

Best Vegan Cream Cheese & Soft Cheese

Kite Hill Vegan Cream Cheese

Cream cheese may have been the hardest of the cheeses for me to give up. Luckily, Kite Hill came to the rescue with their impressively authentic-tasting vegan alternative to keep my morning bagels company.

Kite Hill coconut-based vegan spreadable cheese has that tang and richness that defines cream cheese. You can taste a bit of that coconut oil in there too, but it is very subtle compared to the other flavors.

The only downside to this delicious spread? It breaks down with heat. So, if youre spreading it on a freshly toasted bagel, be ready to eat it fast before that delectable spread starts to melt.

Treeline Soft French Style Cheese

Looking for a more traditional soft cheese that you can spread on crackers and dip your veggies in? Treeline has you covered. Their line of soft french style cheeses is perfect for adding to your vegan cheese board or eating with your finger!

These spreads are available in five awesome flavors to fit every mood, including garlic herb, chipotle-serrano, scallion, and sea salt and pepper. They are made from cashew milk and fermented to perfection to capture the texture and flavor of true french cheese spreads.

Our advice? Dont settle with just one tuborder the variety pack. You can always freeze the extra and use them later. They taste just as good either way!

Can I Make Lower Fat Dairy

As mentioned in the recipe notes, you can use low-fat mayonnaise. I prefer real mayonnaise in this recipe for optimal taste and consistency. But if you are used to light mayo, then it might still taste perfect to you. Using light mayo will reduce the fat to about 6.2 grams per serving, and the calories to about 80 calories per serving. I have not tried yogurt in place of the mayo, so I cant guarantee taste if you opt to substitute an unsweetened, plain dairy-free yogurt. Brands can vary widely in taste, and will influence the flavor.

Why Not Dairy Cottage Cheese

Vegans do not use animal products, usually for both ethical and health reasons. Most commercially available cheeses, including cottage cheese, are made with some form of rennet. Rennet is taken from the inside of the stomach of a calf or other baby animal during the butchering process. It is used to coagulate the milk as the first step in cheese making. While there is a vegetable-based rennet available it is not commonly used commercially.

Many commercial dairies, even organic ones, do use certified humane methods of raising the animals, but most vegans prefer to stay away from dairy altogether.

The Evolution Of Vegan Cheese

If the last time you last tried vegan cheese was ages ago, you owe it to yourself to try the newest offerings. The first non-dairy cheese brands on the market deserved their bad reputation. They were usually made from highly processed ingredients, and most brands didnt even melt properly.

Thats all changed as companies have stepped up their game. Today, many vegan cheese brands qualify as truly gourmet. Most use premium ingredients such as nut milks that carry rich and satisfying flavors. Theyve also innovated production methods that deliver the satisfying texture and flavors of real cheese. With so many superb dairy-free cheese products crowding the market, mediocre offerings dont survive long.

The following lists feature the best vegan cheese brands available in North America and worldwide. Does Vegan Cheese Melt

Vegan cheese has evolved a lot over the past decade, and many vegan cheeses melt just like dairy cheese. That said, plant-based cheese may take a little longer and a bit more heat to melt than dairy cheese, since it has a higher melting point. So if you like your cheese ooey gooey, dont expect it to melt upon being sprinkled on hot pasta it will need a little more heat than that. For example, if youre trying to make a grilled cheese try adding a lid to the pan to up the heat.

Downsides Of Dairy Free Cream Cheese

While there are certain benefits to choosing dairy free cream cheese, there are also some downsides:

  • Level of processing. To mimic the taste and texture of conventional cream cheese, dairy free cream cheeses are often highly processed. Several studies have linked higher intake of ultra-processed foods to heart disease, cancer, depression, and other common health conditions .
  • Additives. Gums such as xanthan gum and guar gum are the most common types of additives in dairy free cream cheese. They are derived from natural sources, used to thicken products and to prevent separation. Though they are not absorbed by the body and have been deemed safe to consume, their presence is an indicator the product is more processed. Its important to point out that gums are a common additive in regular cream cheese as well .
  • Taste and texture. Despite the additives to help, some proponents of traditional cream cheese suggest the taste and texture of dairy free cream cheese simply doesnt stack up. As this downside is based on opinion, consider trying a dairy free cream cheese for yourself before completely ruling them out.

Best Vegan Cheese Shreds

Miyokos Shredded Cheese

We told you youd be seeing more Miyokos on this list, and here they are again! This time with their deliciously meltable shredded cheese.

In this category, Miyokos offers two great flavors: farmhouse cheddar and pepperjack. Both are bursting with authentic cheesy flavor whether you enjoy them by the handful straight out of the fridge or melt them in your favorite recipe.

These awesome shreds are made with cultured oat milk and beans which gives them an impressively cheese-like texture while boosting the protein and calcium content. You can feel good about indulging in this healthy cheese alternative.

Daiya Cutting Board Shreds

Daiya is a big name in the vegan cheese world, but weve always found their products to be a bit so-so. They arent the best at melting or and dont taste much like cheese when eaten cold. But their new cutting board collection has some big improvements.

If youre looking for a tasty vegan cheese to melt over your pasta or to add to your pizza, these are worth trying. The new blend is available in six different flavors, including mozzarella, parmesan, and four-cheese Mexican blend.

These tapioca-flour-and-coconut-oil-based cheeses have a lot more cheesy flavor than the originals but still arent my favorite for eating cold. But when cooked and melted, they are incredibly tasty and have a great, stretchable texture.

Follow Your Heart Cheddar Cheese Shreds

Best Vegan Cheese Slices

Parmela Creamery Sharp Cheddar

Parmela Creamery puts out a lot of great vegan cheeses, but their sharp cheddar is top of the pack. These thick slices are slow-fermented, which gives them that extra bite that defines sharp cheddars.

They are made from whole cashew milk and have a texture that more closely resembles real sliced cheese than most options out there. These slices make the perfect addition to vegan burgers, wraps, a cheese sandwich, or to top your favorite crackers. Whether they are part of the supporting cast or the main attraction, they have the bold flavor to impress.

If you like your cheddar a little more subdued, their mild cheddar slices arent bad either.

Field Roast Chao Sliced Cheeses

Field Roast is well known for its long line of vegan deli products. One of our favorites is the Chao sliced cheese line.

These delectable slices are made from a mix of coconut oil and fermented tofu. They have an amazingly buttery flavor and are available in five great flavors, including tomato cayenne, spicy, and garden herb.

In terms of a good plant-based cheese for melting over a veggie burger or on a grilled cheese, these arent the best. But for use in a cold sandwich or wrap, you just cant beat their flavor and creamy texture.

Violife Sliced Cheese

When it comes to vegan cheese, you cant go wrong reaching for any Violife product, but we really love their sliced cheeses. Here, youll find two great options: mature cheddar and smoked provolone.
