What Type Of Cheese Is Best For Philly Cheesesteaks
Philadelphians have strong opinions about whether cheesesteaks should be made with Cheez Whiz, American, or provolone cheese. We found that the combination of thinly sliced American and provolone cheeses makes for the best flavor and meltability.
No matter what variety you choose, youll want to simply embrace the mess it creates, and heres why: After the cheese is melted and the steak is sizzling and caramelized in the skillet, youll use a spatula to transfer the filling into the sliced rolls. Its nearly impossible to maintain the neat layers of cheese, peppers, onions, and steak and move the mound in one clean scoop. Instead, allow the filling to mix with the melted cheese as you stuff it into the bread, which, honestly, makes it all the more delicious.
How To Cook Steak For Cheese Steak
As we mentioned, achieving tender bites of meat has a lot do with the cut you choose from your butcher. Cutting the steak as thin as possible helps as well. Our trick for super-thinly sliced steak? Freeze the meat for an hour or two before slicing. Freezing the meat will make it much easier to slice. A super-sharp knife helps, too.Lastly, a cast iron skillet is key. Cooking steak in a cast iron skillet allows you to cook the meat at a very high heat, yielding tender bites of steak with deliciously crispy edges. If you dont have a cast iron skillet, now is a great time to purchase one.

- Ribeye steak should be marinated for at least 6 hours in order to reap the benefits of the tenderizing properties. For the maximum benefit, however, marinate overnight.
- Dont poke holes: In contrast to popular belief, you should NOT poke holes in the steak before marinating. This actually drains out the valuable juices and will result in less juicy steak.
- Always marinate steak for a prolonged period of time covered in the refrigerator and not at room temperature to avoid food-born illness. Only remove it from the fridge to the counter 60 minutes before youre ready to grill to help bring it to room temperature so it cooks evenly.

Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich With Garlic Mayo
Definitely a five-star experience! I used sirloin steak that had been marinating in steak seasoning for a day and a half to allow the spices to truly infuse into the meat. Grilled the sirloin until it was medium rare, then thinly sliced it and placed it aside in preparation for the sandwich construction. Prior to assembling the sandwiches, I caramelized the onions and sautéed the peppers, using green and red peppers to provide color. Mushrooms were added to make the sandwich more authentically Philly.
The Manchego cheese, which gave it a distinct flavor, was my personal favorite.
The garlic mayonnaise was the star of the sandwich!
Thank you, Tera, for the wonderful recipe.

Why Is Philly Known For Cheesesteaks
According to Philadelphias official tourism site, Pat Olivieri invented the cheesesteak in the 1930s. Word spread rapidly through the cabbie rumor mill, and drivers from all over the city soon visited Olivieri for steak sandwiches. Olivieri eventually opened up Pats King of Steaks on 9th Street and Passyunk Avenue.
What Type Of Cheese For Cheesesteak

A great deal of discussion exists around which sort of cheese should be used in order to make an excellent Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. While some people insist on a traditional American cheese sauce, I like something a little milder, such as Provolone cheese. To prevent using a smoked provolone that is too strong, use regular provolone instead. You may also use gruyere cheese in this recipe. Really, the decision is entirely up to you. Make it exactly as you want it! For crying out loud, its only a sandwich!

How To Thinly Slice Steak
The secret to a fantastic cheesesteak sandwich lies in the thinly sliced beef used in the sandwich. Itll nearly feel like its melting in your mouth. The quickest and most convenient method of thinly slicing steak is to store it in the freezer for approximately 30 minutes before thinly slicing it against the grain with a sharp knife. You might also consider purchasing a meat shaver. However, that could be a touch severe.
Was The Cheesesteak Invented In Philly
The cheesesteak as we know it today was invented in the 1930s by Pat Olivieri. The story goes that Olivieri, who was a hot dog vendor in south Philadelphia, used a butchers raw beef to make his Italian Roll. After finding a steak sandwich, the cab driver ordered a steak meal from the delivery driver.

Does Philly Cheesesteak Have Sauce On It
As far as my personal opinion goes, authentic cheesesteaks have no sauce, but only as long as you order an Italian sausage steak. As you can see from this, Philadelphias cheesesteak meccas are generally places like Pats or Genos in South Philly or Jims Steaks on South Street, where Im fond of hanging out from childhood.

How To Cook Cheese Steak
When you’ve thinly sliced your steak, it’s time to prep the veggies, which include garlic, onion, mushrooms, and a bell pepper. I recommend mincing the garlic and mushrooms, then slicing the onion and bell pepper.
TIP: It’s important when you cook the meat that you don’t cook it so long that you dry it out. You want it to be done, but you also want it to be nice and flavorful, as well as moist and tender.
What Kind Of Steak To Use For Cheesesteak
You want to use a nice cut of steak that has some marbled fat on it and is really tender. As the thin steak cooks, the fat melts a bit and makes each piece of steak very tender. Personally, I like to use rib eye for mine . Top round is also a classic cheesesteak option. Do not use tougher meat cuts like flank steak or brisket. They will be really chewy in the final sandwich.
