Vegan Babybel Cheese Is Here And Its Wrapped In Green Wax

Big Government Cheese | Planet Money | NPR

French cheese brand Bel Group is releasing a vegan version of its famed Babybel cheeses. To recreate the eating experience of the original, the mini vegan cheese wheels come wrapped in wax but instead of the classic red color, these new dairy-free cheeses are covered in a peelable green wax. The new Babybel Plant-Based cheeses are certified vegan by The Vegan Society and fortified with calcium and B12.

Weve seen overwhelming demand for the development of a vegan-friendly Babybel over the years, and with the plant-based market continuing to grow substantially, the new launch is perfectly timed to meet this consumer appetite, Babybel brand manager Ollie Richmond toldThe Grocer.

The new vegan Babybel cheeses will hit Sainsburys stores in the United Kingdom on January 1, in time for the annual Veganuary campaign which challenges people to go vegan for the month of January and beyond. Sold in recyclable packaging, the Babybel vegan cheeses are expected to hit additional stores and regions after the initial Sainsburys launch.

Are There Any Health Advantages To Eating Plant

Of course, the healthfulness of vegan cheese depends on its ingredient list and level of processing. McNeill says varieties made with a base of potatoes, carrots, nutritional yeast, nuts, or seeds might pack more nutrients than their dairy counterparts. This can include more fiber, vitamin C, B vitamins, and magnesium, she says. Certain brands also enrich products with nutrients youd get from dairy cheese. Take Treelines cashew cream cheeses, which are fortified with probiotic-rich acidophilus. However, vegan cheese takes a couple of losses. Most store bought cheeses are lower in protein than traditional dairy cheese, but also may be lower in saturated fat than dairy cheese, says McNeill. So nut and soy-based cheeses might not elevate your diet to the next level of health, but its also likely youre not digging into a cheese ball every night.

Additionally, plant-based cheeses can be easier to digest, especially for 65 percent of the population that struggles with lactose, which makes dairy cheese a no-go. Bye bye, gas, indigestion, and problematic trips to the restroom.

Formaggi Di Fossa In Bologna Emilia Romagna Italy

Suggested by Amber of With Husband In Tow

One of the most unique cheeses to eat in Bologna, Italy has to be Formaggi di fossa or cave cheese. At its most simple, this is cheese aged in a cave.

Suggested Tour: Parma: Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese Tasting Tour

The history of cave cheese dates to the Middle Ages when people protected their food supplies from invaders by hiding the food in the ground. The word fossa technically translates to the word pit, although cave cheese seems to be a more popular interpretation.

Simply put, cave cheese is a pecorino sheeps milk cheese that is aged inside a pit in the ground or pecorino di fossa. Each cheese wheel is wrapped in a cloth bag and placed in the pit each August. The pit is sealed for about three months.

When removed from the pit in November, its entirely different from the softer cheese that was placed in the pit. It is particularly pungent in both smell and taste. In addition to eating Formaggio di fossa on its own, it can be sprinkled over pasta or served with honey or traditional balsamic vinegar.

Its a must-eat cheese when travelling in Bologna or in Emilia Romagna, Italy.

Gruyere Cheese From Gruyere Switzerland

Suggested Tours: Private Swiss Cheese & Chocolate Tasting Trip in Gruyeres

Gruyere is steeped in the Swiss tradition. Gruyere is a full-bodied almost hard cheese from the canton of Fribourg. This cows cheese gets its taste from the high alps meadows in summer and hay in winter. It takes six months to mature and is extremely versatile. If you go up to Gruyeres, the town the cheese is named after, during summer, you can head up the mountain and watch the cheese being made in its traditional copper vats.

I love Gruyere in French onion soup, Croque Monsieur, with a salad. However, the very best way to enjoy Gruyere is in the depths of winter in a traditional Swiss fondue. Dipping the potatoes into this gooey richness warms you up, especially after a hard day of skiing.

Good Planet Raises $12m For Meltable Plant

GOOD PLANeT Foods, a company that makes plant-based cheese, announced yesterday that it had raised a $12 million Series A round. The funding was led by Cleveland Avenue with participation by GreatPoint Ventures, Tasseo Consumer, Stray Dog Capital and Lever VC. This is the companys total funding announced to date.

Based in Seattle, GOOD PLANeT makes vegan cheese from shredded mozzarella to sliced cheddar that doesnt contain any soy, nuts, or GMOs. Instead, its made from coconut oil and potato starch plus natural flavorings.

Since its coconut oil-based the cheese will melt, which not all vegan cheeses, especially those made from nuts, can do. However, that also means that its high in saturated fat: a one-ounce serving of GOOD PLANeTs shredded mozzarella contains 5.6 grams of saturated fat, or 28 percent of your daily recommended value.

GOOD PLANeTs cheese is sold at major retailers like Walmart, Costco, and Whole Foods nationwide. With its new funding, GOOD PLANeT will expand production and reach.

We havent tasted GOOD PLANeTs cheese ourselves, so I cant pass judgment on how close it comes to the real thing. However, Ive tried other coconut oil-based cheese before and find that it falls short, both on texture and flavor.

Review: Good Planet Plant Based Cheese

While shopping at Walmart I happened to spot a new plant based cheese. It was not in a location of the store I would have went looking for it, which is why I was surprised to see it. Typically, plant based or vegan cheese is found in the produce department , or in with the dairy cheese options . But at Walmart, this vegan cheese was on display in a different area, all on its own. It was on a refrigerated end cap , on the top shelf. Kind of hidden really, but it still caught my eye as I was walking by. I’m always up for trying a new vegan cheese, so I bought some.

Good Planet offers a variety of options, including slices and shreds. At the Walmart I was at they only had cheddar and mozzarella shreds, so I bought some of both. This plant based cheese is made with coconut oil. It does not have a long ingredient list, which I really like, and it is all vegan. Interestingly though, they stay away from calling it “vegan” anywhere on the package. My thought is that they do this because vegan cheeses tend to scare some people and have a negative reputation. But after tasting this plant based cheese, I think it could help to elevate the vegan cheese reputation.

Dutch Gouda Cheese From The Netherlands

Suggested Tour: Gouda: 2-Hour Monument Walking Tour

Gouda is a yellow cheese made out of cows milk. Its a traditional cheese that dates back to 1184, in fact, its one of the oldest types of cheese you can still buy today! The name doesnt come from the city where its produced but derives from the location where it was traded.

In the Middle Ages, the city of Gouda obtained market rights on cheese. The taste of Gouda cheese varies with age. The longer it ages, the stronger the taste. There are six age gradations: young cheese , young matured , matured , extra matured , old cheese and extra old cheese . In the Netherlands cubes of Gouda cheese are often served as a snack together with some mustard.

Camembert Cheese From Normandy France

Suggested Tour: Full-Day Gourmet Tour to Normandy

If youve only ever heard of one French cheese, it is probably Camembert. However, the plastic wrapped version you find in your local grocery store doesnt have much in common with the creamy, unctuous, and yes, slightly stinky authentic Camembert.

True Camembert comes from the Normandy region of France, more known for its D-day landing beaches than the rolling green fields of the interior. These fields are home to a speckled breed of cow, called Normande, recognized by the dark spots, or glasses around their eyes. These happy cows produce the rich, creamy milk that makes Camembert so delicious.

You can visit the tiny village of Camembert, where there is a museum dedicated to the namesake cheese. It is rather commercial though. A better experience is to head to the nearby town of Livarot to the E. Graindorge Fromagerie, a small factory producing a variety of local cheeses including Camembert.

You can tour the factory and learn about the cheese-making process, and of course, taste and purchase the delicious result of their labours in the shop. You can also tour some of the dairy farms in the region, through the French Open Farm system and buy cheese and other produce directly from the farmers making it the ultimate Normandy cheese tour.

How Am I Supposed To Use Plant

Dora and Friends The Explorer Cartoon Journey To The Cheese Planet Adventure as a Cartoon !

Think of the cheese usually stacked on a charcuterie board, then remind yourself that it probably has a vegan dupe by now. The cheese experiencewhether vegan or notwill always depend on its melt, texture, and stretch. Different varieties of cheese can cover a wide range of flavors, from subtle creaminess to a pungent tang depending on what kind you reach for.

All of this simply means that you should be able to use vegan cheeses in the same ways that you would use their dairy-rich counterparts. If you’re making a plant-based pizza or panini, go for shredded vegan mozzarella and add a sprinkle of nutritional yeast to replicate the savory-salty flavor of Parmesan. If grilled cheese or vegan “cheeseburgers” are on the menu, you’d benefit from buying a package of plant-based cheese slices. And if you’re trying to quell a craving for queso, try a cashew cream-based dip that’s been blended with similar spices or make your own.

The culinary options are no different from traditional cheese, but do keep in mind that the melt-ability and flavor of vegan cheeses will vary .
