How To Serve Pimento Cheese
If there’s one thing pimento cheese is not, it’s pretentious. In the South, it’s commonly served as a sandwich between two pieces of white bread. You can also use it to make tea sandwiches, spread it over crackers or crostini, or use it as a dip for vegetables like celery or carrots.
Increasingly, pimento cheese is being used as a condiment to make dishes instantly “Southern.” Try adding it to burgers, omelets, grilled cheese, biscuits, grits, macaroni and cheese, etc.

Best Organic: Cowgirl Creamery
Cant just buy one or two cheeses
If youre a cheese lover, youve likely already heard about Cowgirl Creamerys incredible cheese. Mount Tam, its triple cream Brie-style cheese, is mushroomy, creamy, and a total dreamboat. Perhaps youre more of a Red Hawk fan, with its distinctive orange rind and characteristic meaty funk.
What you may not know is that all of Cowgirl Creamerys cheeses are made with organic milk. Whereas certified organic produce isnt all that hard to find, certified organic cheese is. Even if a cheesemaker follows organic practices, the certification is expensive and very strict, but Cowgirl values sustainability and thinks cheese tastes better when its made with organic milk.
The store doesnt sell its cheese piecemeal on the website , but its collections feature its flagship cheeses, plus wonderful small-batch meat, jam, crackers, and other accouterments.

The Best Fromageries In Kl To Get The Finest Gourmet Cheese
When one talks about cheese, it is instantly related to imported premium food that fetches a high price. The idea of eating cheese isnt something that is common in our local cuisine in Malaysia. It is not until recently when Milky Whey made headlines as the first local cheese maker to produce high-quality cheeses using locally sourced milk. And were not talking just about the usual cheddar and feta Milky Whey also produces sharp parmesan as well as blue cheese variants to cater to the growing demand in gourmet cheeses.
My Plant Deli is also another local food artisan that focuses on purveying vegan cheeses. These non-dairy cheeses are perfect for those who have dietary restrictions and for those who are trying to keep up with a healthy diet.
If a cheese platter with crackers, pate, nuts and berries sounds like an indulgent treat for you , you want to be looking for the finest gourmet cheese to make the calories worthwhile. From brie to camembert, Stichelton to Manchego, here are five fromageries in Kuala Lumpur to find your preferred cheeses for grazing, baking or cooking.
Australian And Victorian Cheeses
One producer you might find overseas is Tasmanias King Island Dairy. They regularly feature in the Australian Grand Dairy Awards and make excellent soft cheeses including camembert, brie and soft blue varieties. Other well known producers include Bruny Island Cheese , Holy Goat! , and Meredith Dairy .
We love Holy Goat! And they are a regular at local farmers markets in Victoria. We see them monthly at the Collingwood Childrens Farm Market where they have been a stall holder for years. You can find reference to our preference for Meredith Dairys feta in our recent Avocado Smash Recipe.
As Australia does not export large volumes of cheese it is a great thing to try while you are here. There are some great cheese shops in Melbourne and a lot of restaurants will offer a high quality selection of local and/or imported cheeses. Two of our favorites are:
PLANNING AN UPCOMING
- And the Spring Street Grocer in the Melbourne CBD.
The scent of maturing cheeses when you walk into these cheese rooms is like being hit by a wall of magnificence.
We love cheese and everything about cheese. We have attended workshops in Melbourne to learn how to make cheese. We have visited a dairy producing Parmigiano Reggiano in Parma, Italy as well as many dairies in Australia. We work cheese into our travels and our meals, making sure we try the local products whenever we can.

Where To Buy Pimentos
- Pimento’s are found in any grocery store. Look in the canned vegetable aisle, and they should be close to roasted red peppers, artichokes, and perhaps olives. They are typically in a small glass jar. I always find them on the top shelf.
- Alternatively, you can make your own, but I find it much easier and time saving to buy the store jarred version.

Pawleys Island Specialty Foods Palmetto Cheese
Ah, Palmetto. It’s the top-selling pimiento cheese in the USits web domain is literally www.pimentocheese.comand as expected, this classic pimiento is the runaway favorite. With a bright orange lid and a Comic Sans-like font, Palmetto Cheese Spread looksand tasteshomegrown. Originating in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, this specialty cheese is now sold in 49 states at over 9,000 locations, so no matter where you are in the country, you too can get a taste of authentic Southern pimiento cheese. The company produces three signature flavors: original pimiento, pimiento with jalapeños, and pimiento with bacon. While the jalapeño version is a favorite amongst our editors, for the sake of standardization, we used original for this taste test.
The primary ingredients of Palmetto are sharp cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, cream cheese, and pimientos, creating the legendary cheese spread that many of our testers recognized instantly. “This has to be Palmetto,” one Southern Living editor said, commenting on the spread’s pale orange color and thickly-grated cheese. “I’ve passed this off as homemade too many times to count,” she laughed. The cheese does taste homemade: It boasts a balanced cheese-to-mayonnaise ratio and a sharp cheddar taste with a little hint of heat. But don’t just take my word for it. Here are some comments from our editors.
“This is the way pimiento cheese was meant to taste. A gift from the good Lord above to anyone who is inept in the kitchen.”

How To Make Pimento Cheese:
**scroll down for full ingredients list and printable directions**
- Get all the ingredients together. This is a dump and mix recipe, so it’s very easy.
- Using a large mixing bowl, add everything except the shredded cheese and mix well with a hand mixer or stand mixer. You can also mix by hand, but it’s easier with the electric mixer.
- Once everything is mixed well, add the extra sharp cheddar cheese and mix well until combine. The cheese should be somewhat chunky, but incorporated with the other ingredients.
- Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving. The longer it has to meld, the better. I find the flavor to be even tastier after 24 hours.

Homemade Southern Style Pimento Cheese
That was when my mother started working on southern style pimento cheese recipes.
I think my dad enjoyed that because he kept asking her what secret ingredient she was going to add next. She kept trying different things, until she settled on one we all liked.
Hands down, our favorite add-on was chopped jalapeno peppers. Here are some of the other things we tried:
- Black olives and green olives
- Crumbled bacon

Whats The Best Storebought Pimento Cheese
Few things seem more Southern than a pile of pimento cheese.
But the origin of pimento cheese may surprise some. According to Southern food history writer and author Robert Moss, pimento cheese was not first made in the South, but rather in New York State.
At its heart, pimento cheese is a simple combination of grated cheese, pimento peppers, mayonnaise and seasoning.
In the late 19th century, pimento peppers became a popular import from Spain. Pimentos were combined with cream cheese to form the first known versions of a pimento cheese spread. The Souths iconic version developed in the 20th century when Spanish peppers became a big industry in Georgia. Moss suggests that it was a combination of the Depression Era-popularity of hoop cheese and mayonnaise that led to the development of pimento cheese as we know it today.
While making pimento cheese is not a difficult task, there are many days where its simply easier to run to the store and get one of the many available brands in the market today to slather on bread or slowly cover all the crevices of a Triscuit cracker.
This week I tried four popular brands that can easily be obtained locally. All four are made in the South and found at most supermarkets or, in the case of DiPratos, found at the restaurant deli. I tried each both cold out of the container and hot out of the oven to see which would best fit any situation.
