Purchase of cheese heroin can be made for around $10 a gram or a single dose called a bump for as little as $2. Narcotic authorities are not sure where the name cheese heroin came from. Most suspect it is because the appearance resembles Parmesan cheese.
This type of heroin is snorted and not injected. The drug first made its appearance in several public middle and high schools in the Dallas area. Some police agencies also refer to it as starter heroin due to it is usually targeted at young children. The demographic group most frequently charged with possession of this drug is Hispanic teens.

Cheese Heroin Still A Cheap Dangerous Threat In Dallas
Two recent deaths of Dallas area teens could be linked to cheese heroin use. Many fear the deadly concoction of heroin and night time pain relievers is making a comeback among young adults. Sujata Dand reports experts say the drug never really went away.
Ismael Martinez cant remember exactly when he started smoking marijuana.
He thinks he was 7 or 8 years old when his older brother made him smoke it. At 17, he was arrested for possession of heroin, and now hes in rehab.
“I came to Dallas one day with some friends, and you know, thats the popular drug around here in Dallas,” he said. “I was doing other drugs at that time. But, the other drugs are a gateway to other drug, so, I started hitting lines of cheese.”
“Cheese” is a highly addictive mixture of black tar heroin and nighttime pain relievers.
Ismael is a thin, clean-cut young man. He nervously looks down at his feet when he explains how the drug made him feel.
“The feeling was, it made me feel great. It made me forget about everything, didnt care, no,” he said.
Ismael is one of 30 teenagers staying at Phoenix House Academy, a residential rehabilitation center in Dallas. Most of the clients that come here are Latino, and of those 75 percent are cheese heroin addicts. Five years ago, the drug concoction got a lot of media attention after more than 20 deaths. Phoenix House Program Director Howard Lindsay says the problem continues.
Ismael says he paid just 10 or 20 dollars for a hit.

Between the time of Cortez Jr.’s death and the announcement of his toxicology tests in late April, The Dallas Morning News published the results of a lengthy analysis of autopsy results between 2005 and 2007, conducted in concert with the Dallas County medical examiner’s office, which suggested that as many as 17 deaths among adolescents during that period were attributable to cheese heroin, not including the Cortez death. The conclusion was based in part on the presence of both heroin and diphenhydramine in the blood of the deceased additionally, the families of 11 victims confirmed the deceased had used cheese heroin. Some toxicologists questioned the results due to the absence of acetaminophen. Other experts argued that acetaminophen has a shorter half-life and might have been metabolized by the body prior to death. Susan Dalterio, a University of Texas at San Antonio pharmacology expert, insisted that the combination was unlikely to be a coincidence, as a person sleepy from diphenhydramine would be unlikely to be abusing heroin at the same time. On April 24, the same day toxicology results were announced confirming the link to cheese, police announced a family friend would be charged with murder for having mixed the drugs for Cortez.

The First Deaths Are Reported
Several of the deaths are notable due either to the publicity that followed or unusual circumstances of the case. One of the earliest published instances of a death attributed to cheese heroin was that of Karen Becerra, an 18-year-old high school senior found dead by her father in their West Dallas home on April 24, 2006. Police attributed her death to snorting cheese and drinking alcohol. On November 1, 2006, 17-year-old Keith Witherspoon died in nearby Mesquite a story the following month in The Dallas Morning News profiled Witherspoon as “the first Dallas-area youth publicly known to have died of a heroin overdose since the ‘cheese’ concerns were raised.” The death was also notable because Mesquite is located northeast of Dallas, indicating the problem had moved beyond its origins in the northwest quadrant of the city.
