Do I Put The Seasoning On Before Or After I Cook It
Its best to put dry seasonings on before you cook it. I like to add mine about 30 minutes before I grill the chicken so it has a chance to stick to the meat and wont fall off right away.
You can also sprinkle a little additional seasoning when it comes off the grill. Its your meat, so season it how you see fit.

Close the sandwich and continue grilling, flipping the sandwich with a turner as needed, until both sides are golden brown, another 2-3 minutes per side.
Usually, the second side takes less time than the first. Press down on the sandwich gently but firmly with your turner to compact it a little, but dont smoosh it. You may need to turn the heat down to medium-low to keep the bread from charring.
Peek in the sandwich to see if the cheese is fully melted. If the bread is grilled to your liking but the cheese needs more time, turn the heat down and grill it a few minutes longer.

Cut the sandwich the way you like best and let it cool a minute or so before eating, unless you like burning your mouth on molten cheese. Serve immediately.

Make It Better: Add Bacon
Bacon makes literally everything better, including an already great grilled cheese. Bacon pairs particularly well with melty cheddar or American cheese, but add it to any classically-prepared grilled cheese of your choice. If you want to go all out, you can even add a fried egg to your sandwich for a NYC-inspired BEC grilled cheese.
What Defines A Grilled Cheese

A grilled cheese sandwich is assembled by creating a cheese filling, often cheddar, or American, between two slices of bread, and is then heated until the bread browns and the cheese melts. A layer of butter or mayonnaise is sometimes added to the outside of the bread for additional flavor and texture.

Why Does My Grilled Cheese Get Soggy
Start with quality ingredients Anything less than 1 will make a flimsy, soggy grilled cheese and anything too thick will not allow the cheese to melt properly. Thick-cut classic white bread that you find in the super market can work, but avoid Wonder Bread or similarly squishy bread.

Bread For Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
Have you ever gone to the store thinking, I need to get bread specifically for making grilled cheese sandwiches? I sure havent! Grilled cheese sandwiches happen in my house not because of meal planning, but lack of it. Thats whats so great about them!
Sliced sandwich bread is classic. Crusty artisanal bread is great, too. Bread that has a very open, lacy interior lets too much cheese ooze through, and bread thats exceptionally dense makes for a leaden sandwich. Bread thats neither dense nor airy is what you want.
Try these:
- Brioche loaves
Now, that we have the type of bread figured out, lets talk about the best slice for the job. The thicker the bread slices, the longer it will take for the cheese to melt. And the bread will wind up detracting from the cheese, which is not the point!
Bread sliced over half an inch thick will impede optimal cheese melting. For perfect grilled cheese every time opt for slices between 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch thick.
Have I made grilled cheese on hot dog buns before? Yes. Are they ideal? No, far from it. But you get the picture. Sometimes a sandwich isnt a work of art. Its just food. Do what works for you!
What Kind Of Chicken Is The Best For Skillet Bbq Chicken
The recipe calls for boneless chicken thighs. Theyre great as they cook fast, and their small size means that the BBQ sauce to chicken ratio is high. Theyre also a little fattier than chicken breasts, so theyre deliciously tender and juicy.
You can easily make this recipe using chicken breasts instead, but theyll need to be cooked a little longer. Sear them for 5 minutes per side, then add a little water to the pan with the BBQ sauce and cook them in the sauce for 8-10 minutes.

More Ways To Cook Halloumi
Although grilled slices of halloumi is a popular way to cook it, the cheese also can be cut into cubes and heated in a pot of soup. You might want to try it threaded onto skewers and grilled with vegetables or sauté the cubes with oil and garlic or vegetables as well.
There are a number of recipes available that can serve as inspiration for even more ways to enjoy halloumi. For instance, you can grill or pan-fry halloumi with sautéed kale for an impressive appetizer.
Halloumi burgers are a nice vegetarian alternative and delicious with a smokey tomato jam and avocado crema. If thats not cheesy enough, try a sweet and spicy halloumi sandwich with roasted squash, raspberry harissa jam, and a brussel sprout slaw. You can even add warm halloumi to a green bean and potato salad, a recipe thats a British favorite in the summer.

Tips For The Best Grilled Cheese
- Low heat it takes a little patience to make the perfect grilled cheese. Keep your heat on low to give the cheese time to fully melt while the bread gets golden and crisp. If browning too fast, turn the heat down.
- Butter generously the amount of butter may seem like a lot, but it is important for a crispy exterior.
- Use thick-sliced bread we love using Texas toast because its sliced about twice as thick as normal sandwich bread. You want bread that is about 3/4 to 1 thick, but also avoid bread that is too thick or your cheese wont melt properly. Using bread that is too thin will produce a flimsy and sometimes soggy sandwich.

Cheese: Grated Or Sliced For A Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Grated cheese melts more evenly, plus it allows more even bread coverage. That means you can pack more cheese on every bite! And if you are blending a few cheeses, you can mix grated cheeses together better.
Dont feel like messing around with a cheese grater? Fine, skip it. Youll still wind up with a grilled cheese sandwich. But youll miss out on those little shreds that slip out of the sandwich and slowly crisp up in the pan. You know what Im talking aboutthe cheese crispies. I love those! Do you?

Choose Your Ingredients Wisely

The foundation of any great recipe is great ingredients, so you want to take care in choosing great bread and great cheese to make the perfect grilled cheese. We love a light and airy sourdough for our base, because it crisps up nicely, has a ton of flavor, but still maintains a soft interior even while the exterior takes on a good crunch.
We probably all have differing opinions on what the perfect cheese choice is, and thats just fine, the possibilities there are nearly endless. Your cheese choice can be entirely personal, just make sure to choose a good melting cheese like cheddar, American, fontina, provolone, or mozzarella This isnt a job for halloumi. And dont be afraid to mix your cheeses for more flavor a little aged gouda or brie or a sprinkle of parm goes a long way in bumping up flavor.
While were talking cheese, one more tip. Grating your cheese can really help you achieve the perfect sandwich. No one wants to get to the end of this process and find that their cheese hasnt melted through. Using grated cheese helps it melt before your bread starts to burn, so youre sure to have a nice ooey-gooey result.
Oh, also, youre going to need a bit of Kosher salt. More on that later.
