How to Make: Cheesy Buffalo Chicken Dip

It is so easy to make slow cooker buffalo chicken dip. You pretty much just dump everything in and the crock pot do its thing.

  • Prep the chicken. I usually use cooked rotisserie chicken for this recipe but if you are starting with raw chicken season it with salt and pepper and cook it on the stove with some spray oil. Chop into small pieces. I personally prefer chopped chicken in dips but you can shred if you like that texture.
  • Add all the ingredients. Add the ingredients into the crock pot.
  • Cook. Turn the slow cooker on high and cook for about 30 minutes and then stir. Cook more until your desired texture is reached and then set on warm to serve. It usually takes 1-2 hours on high for me. Make sure to check and stir every 30 minutes though.
  • Serve. Serve with tortilla chips, carrots, celery, or any other dipping agent you like. Make sure to try some of my leftover ideas below if you dont end up gobbling it all up!
  • This makes about 2 quarts of dip.

Whats The Best Hot Sauce For This Dip

The type of hot sauce used to make buffalo chicken dip can make all the difference! Test out your favorite. Franks hot sauce is whats used in most recipes. However, I find Franks to be way too bold in this dip, and cutting it back made the dip a pale orange color. If I must use Franks I prefer to use their Buffalo wing sauce to make this dip. It tends to be a bit milder with more levels of flavor. However, my FAVORITEhot sauce to use in this dip is Cholula hot sauce. It has the perfect amount of heat without a strong vinegar base.

Can I Make This In Advance

I encourage it! Make this the night before, or even a few days before. Store in an airtight container until youre ready to serve. If you want to serve it hot, transfer it to a saucepan and re-heat over a low heat. You can also transfer the dip to a microwave-safe bowls and cook in 45-second increments until its hot again. As mentioned, its also delicious served cold or room temperature, so if you dont have any means of heating it up, dont worry!

The magic ingredient to crispy wings without a lot of oil is aluminium free baking powder. It may sounds unappealing, but coating chicken wings in seasoned baking powder is what makes the skin super crispy. You wont taste it in the end results, so long as you use aluminium-free. To be clear, make sure you use baking powder, NOT baking soda, because there is a big difference!

Youre going to pimp yours up with added flavours:

How To Make Buffalo Chicken Dip Step By Step

This delicious dip is a combination of chicken breast meat, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, ranch dressing, and hot sauce baked together.

Its not as complicated as it sounds, and if you use canned chunks of chicken or a rotisserie chicken, you can bake it in the oven in 5 minutes. The original recipe requires boiling fresh chicken breasts and shredding them, but this will add on prep time.

You can use whatever hot sauce you like, such as Franks RedHot sauce. When it comes to the ranch dressing, you can substitute it with blue cheese if you like.

Even though buffalo chicken dip is originally a layered dip, you can make it by mixing all ingredients together before baking. Its up to you! Some of my friends say the layer of cheese on top is a bit thick, so they mix it with everything else. I personally havent had that issue, so I prefer a layered dip.

You can even prepare it one day ahead and have it covered and refrigerated for the next day. Five to ten minutes of extra cooking is all it needs when ready to bake.

Some of my friends make this delicious dip in the crock-pot which requires stirring all ingredients together and cooking on low for 4-6 hours. They stir it once or twice during the process.

This buffalo chicken dip is an absolute must-make. You can make it as an appetizer for dinner and enjoy it with your friends or family.

Why Is My Buffalo Chicken Dip Greasy

Ive tried too many slow cooker buffalo chicken dip recipes that have a layer or pockets of that orange colored oily liquid floating around. This is because the ingredients have either separated or never fully combined in the first place. You dont want that orange oily liquid dripping on your clothes!

How to make Buffalo Chicken Dip

Here in Kansas City, we know how to barbecue. It’s not unusual to see both a grill and a smoker fired up at someone’s house, at the same time! We also LOVE classic Buffalo Chicken Dip, which is a super popular appetizer here in the Midwest! This creamy, spicy dip is a game day favorite, for sure. The next time you’re cooking for the big game, fire up your smoker and make this dreamy buffalo dip!

The primary ingredient in this dip is shredded chicken! I like to grab a whole chicken from the deli that’s already been roasted on the rotisserie, and then shred it. This is a great way to save some time. You can also pre-cook chicken breasts or chicken thighs, or even smoke them! Smoked chicken adds the next level of smokiness! Regardless of how you cook your chicken, you will need four cups of shredded chicken for this recipe.

You can also make this nice melty dip on your gas grill! Just cook over low, indirect heat. The dip will not have a super smoky flavor, but you can add smoke to the mix by adding a few wood chips to the hot coals.

Please note that when you smoke or grill chicken dip, it can come out a bit drier. You can help this by adding a water pan to your smoker, which maintains a moist air environment within the smoker. If needed, you can add extra ranch dressing or buffalo wing sauce, to add back some moisture.

I hope you enjoy this delicious dip, packed with gooey goodness!

How Long Can You Leave Out A Party Dip

Whenever you serve a dip for your guests to enjoy, you should always keep track of how long it sits at room temperature.

For most foods, the general rule of thumb is that a perishable item should not be in the danger zone for more than two hours. And by danger zone, this is usually at or just above room temperature.

Since this dip will be served warm, that should give you another 30-60 minutes before needing to keep track of the dip. So, in total, this dip can be left out for an absolute maximum of three hours, depending on the temperature of the room. However, be sure to still check the dip every now and then and use your best judgment.

Once you pass the recommended time, you can heat it up in the oven again or you can store it in the refrigerator or freezer as directed above.

For best results, Id recommend using a warming tray so that the buffalo ranch chicken dip stays warm and above the danger zone temperature.

    Buffalo Chicken Dip

I make it in our small 1.5 quart slow cooker when I make it for just my family, because it is the perfect size. This crock pot is great for my favorite dip recipes.

Its generally pretty inexpensive too so if you like to throw parties, you definitely have to get one.

However, if you are making it for a crowd I recommend that you double the recipe and then you will want to use a 3 quart crock pot or a standard size crock pot.

I remember this one time I tried to impress my best friend with my cooking skills when I first started out as a chef. And believe me, shes not easy to impress as she works as a professional chef at one of the best restaurants in my town.

Anyway, I set my mind to make something so delicious that even she would be impressed. So, I invited her over for dinner and told her that this time itd be me whos cooking.

She agreed, and after researching online what to cook, I decided to go with a tater tot casserole. Boy, I was so enthusiastic about the whole dinner and convinced her that I would leave her speechless.

But, it turned the other way round, as always.

She asked me if its ok to bring just a buffalo chicken dip and some crackers as an appetizer so that we can have an appetizer while I finished making my dinner.

I didnt mind at all, so she brought it, and guess what? It was spectacular.

When I first saw it, it didnt look pretty, but once I tried it, I was blown away by how good it tasted. It was a hit.

Thats when I realized she won again. Theres no way that my casserole is better than this tangy, creamy dip thats so addictive

Ever since then, her buffalo chicken dip is our favorite thing to cook for birthdays, parties, and all kinds of gatherings, and soon after, all our friends started making and eating it. Everyone goes nuts over it.
