It was lunch time on a muggy late September day in 2013 when an explosion shook downtown Orlando, Florida. A warehouse on west Jefferson street was the casualty. Police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks were already on their way by the time Tim Roth, a good Samaritan, was on the scene. As he searched through the rubble and debris for injured humans, what he found was something else entirely.
As described by the Orlando Sentinel in the next days paper, among the knocked-down suits of armor, animatronics, old arcade games, clown suits and broken lighted signs as if were in the Jokers lair. Fortunately, no humans were injured in the blast, but a wide collection of electronic amusements were destroyed beyond repair. For this warehouse belonged to Aaron Fechter, the inventor of the Whac-A-Mole.
The situation is perhaps made even more comical given that Fechters other big success in the business world to date was the creation of the famous Rock-afire Explosion animatronics band, bits of which were now strewn about in the wreckage.
After this, Fechter created his own company, Creative Engineering. With his new company, Fechter thought he could get his Jutta prototype off the ground. First, though, he needed to raise capital. So he entered into an industry that was quickly growing in Orlando- designing and building animated characters for the amusement park industry or, as we call them today, animatronics.

By 2012, CEC was struggling with decreasing revenue. They ran a rebranding campaign, changing the rat mascot into a rock star guitar-playing mouse. In-store restaurant sales continued to decline through 2013 but merchandising and box office revenue increased.

If you’ve been missing your old favorite characters for far too long, and you have some extra room in your basement, you may have been considered getting your hands on some of the old animatronics. It may seem like it shouldn’t be too hard, considering the company’s decision to remove the robot characters from all locations, you would think a wave of Chuck E. Cheese’s characters are about to flood the market. But it’s not that easy.
Chuck E. Cheese’s has a rather bizarre policy of destroying their characters once they’re retired. In the case of the actual Chuck E. Cheese character costume, which is worn by an employee who walks around, high-fiving guests, one restaurant location was filmed demolishing the head with a sledgehammer, though the normal policy would see the costume shipped to a warehouse where the deed could be performed out of eyesight. Meredith Rose, an intellectual property attorney who once worked in a New Jersey Chuck E. Cheese’s location, tells Atlas Obscura, “If you own this intellectual property writ large, you don’t want a secondary market to pop up.”
But where there is a will, there’s a way. Sets of the old characters do occasionally appear on Craigslist, like a 1985 Beach Bowzers set that asked a cool $5,000. A Rock-afire Explosion Band also appeared back in 2008 on eBay for a very reasonable $14,000.

Woman Sentenced To 10 Years In Chuck E Cheese Shooting
DAVENPORT, Iowa A 25-year-old Davenport woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing another woman at a Chuck E. Cheese.
Treshonda Pollion was sentenced Friday for voluntary manslaughter in the death of 29-year-old Eloise Chairs. Pollion was originally charged with first-degree murder in Chairs death. The plea deal included a mandatory 10-year sentence.
Prosecutors say the two women got into a fight in October after Chairs had argued with others over a card game.
Investigators said Pollion fired a single shot during the confrontation, hitting Chairs.
