Tips For Finding Keto Friendly Salad Dressing At A Restaurant

Gluten Free Blue Cheese Dressing

Since you cant look at the ingredient label when eating out , it is important to be aware of what are safe keto-friendly options and what to avoid.

When it comes to uncovering secretly sugary dressings, pay attention to the words used to describe them. Look out for anything that is referred to as light, lite, fat-free, or low-fat. These options tend to cut down on the fat and scale up on the carbs.

Most dressings that feature a sweet ingredient, like honey mustard or raspberry vinaigrette, typically contain added sugars along with the high-carb ingredient it features. French dressing, thousand island dressing, Catalina dressing, and pre-bottled vinaigrettes are usually high in carbs as well.

Some of the best keto-friendly options will be a standard ranch dressing, chunky bleu cheese, a house-made vinaigrette , and olive oil + vinegar. Keep in mind, however, that these options might have higher carb counts and lower quality oils than expected. Try looking up the info beforehand or bring your own keto-friendly dressing if you want to be certain of what you are consuming.

Is All Blue Cheese Dressing Keto

Most commercially made blue cheese dressings have two carbs or less per serving making it generally keto friendly. For the reasons listed above though, Id rather just make it at home. Once you start really reading the labels for commercially prepared dressing, you may be surprised. There are a lot of filler ingredients and preservatives to make things shelf stable. And certainly some have added sugar and many have crappy vegetable oils. If youre really interested in a clean keto, whole foods keto diet, Id stay away from those as much as possible. Especially if you tend to eat a lot of salad like I do!

For example, Kens Steak House Chunky Blue Cheese brand thats shelf stable lists its first ingredient as soybean oilawful for you for many reasons as previously discussed. Lighthouse brand is found in the refrigerated section so you might think its better. Its first ingredient is canola oil, also awful.

So here we are thinking were eating a healthy salad, but then topping it with inflammatory oils. You can find prepared dressings that have real ingredients like Primal Kitchen. Unfortunately, they do not have blue cheese as of this writing.

Crumbled Blue Cheese Vinaigrette

When I was in High School and College, my family would often celebrate special occasions at a favorite restaurant. In small city like Binghamton, NY, there werent many fancy restaurants, but one restaurant stood out more than any other especially for family reunions.

As Ive mentioned before, my Great Grandparents immigrated from Italy and settled in Cadosia, NY. Itailian food was an important part of our food culture growing up. Cortese was the one place on which my Great Aunts and Uncles and cousins could all agree. An institution since the 1940s, Cortese has long enjoyed their reputation for serving good Italian food like Grandma used to make.

When my family went to Cortese, I always ordered the Homemade Manicotti, Fresh Sea Scallops or Shrimp Scampi which are still on the menu. We always started dinner off with a salad and for everyone except myself, the dressing of choice was the crumbled blue cheese vinaigrette.

At the time, my taste buds had not matured enough to appreciate the sharp, salty, pungent flavor of blue cheese. I couldnt understand the desire behind something that tasted, to me, like stinky feet. I didnt eat Parmesan cheese either, for the same reason. I know, I was weird.

The flavor improves over night, so one may want to make the vinaigrette the day before, then add the crumbled blue cheese before dressing the salad.

There are many stories about how blue cheese came to be. They all involve cheese, bread and a cave. The basic tale is this: someone left a piece of bread in a cave where the cheese was being aged. The bread became moldy and the mold spread to the cheese. Someone came back to the cave days or weeks later, and yum yum yum moldy blue cheese! An industry was born. They began to purposely inject cheese with bread mold during processing, leading to the creation of blue or green-veined cheeses such as Roquefort, Gorgonzola, Cambozola, and Stilton.

Do veined cheeses contain gluten? This question comes up a lot when people have to change their diet due to celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or a wheat allergy. After conducting my own blue cheese investigation, I have the answer: some blue cheeses do contain gluten, but most do not.
