Tips For Making Philly Cheesesteaks At Home

There are a few basic things to remember when cooking cheesesteaks in your own kitchen. Marinating your steak is key since it adds flavor and tenderizes the beef. Choose a recipe that includes instructions for making a marinade.

Slice your beef as thinly as possible so it will crisp up when you fry it. Ask your butcher to do this for you.

If you forget, put the meat in the freezer for an hour before you attempt to slice it yourself. The firmness will make it easier to cut with a knife.

When its time to cook the meat, use a pan with a large surface area. Dont let the meat and veggie bits overlap. Theyll brown up nicely if you give them space.

Assessing products online before buying the desired products from retail shops is also a very common phenomenon.

While doing the crucial research on the provolone cheeses available in the market, you might ask yourself a few questions that will help you reach your decision:

A History Of Provolone Cheese

Provolone is the older brother of the Mozzarella family. Moisture levels differentiate these two different types of cheese. Provolone is 45 percent moisture content, which is lower than Mozzarella with a standard range of 52 to 60 percent moisture. This lower moisture content gives Provolone a longer shelf-life than Mozzarella and the Provolone holds up better as a slicing and shredding cheese.

This low moisture and longer aging results in fuller flavors than Mozzarella.

The stretching of the curd during production results is a malleable cheese with a closed texture that can be sculpted into a variety of shapes, depending on desired function or the whim of the cheese maker. Sometimes it is even formed into the shape of animals.

Provoloneâs original shape was round, but with the invention of molds in the early 1900s, the salami shape became most popular because of its practicality for hanging and slicing. Many companies continue to hang and age their Provolone using ropes, a throwback to traditional practices. It was always hung with ropes because it is too soft to sit on a shelf.

Provolone typically made in large batch sizes that involve a lot of hand work.

    The Best Provolone Substitutes

  • How to choose a provolone substitute.
  • Provolone is a traditional Italian cheese that originates in the Pianura Padana . Italian immigrants have brought provolone to the United States, so now it is largely available, even though it may not be as easy to find as other types of cheese and may also be more expensive in comparison.

Provolone usually comes in two varieties:

Provolone dolce: ages for two-three months, it is made with veal rennet which gives it a more delicate and creamy texture and flavor.

Provolone piccante: is left to age for a longer time, tastes stronger and sharper, and is made with either goats or lambs rennet.

Unless youre importing your provolone directly from Italy, the one you find in the U.S. usually resembles the dolce variety but is far from being similar to the original. Provolone is by now produced in a large number of countries and its taste varies depending on the country of origin.

The ones produced in northern Italy are provolone DOP, which means that the provolone is produced following specific measures and has to meet strict quality standards, which in turn guarantees that the final product is excellent.

It is not hard to understand why its not easy to find a cheese like provolone that can take its place in your recipe, but since its not always possible to get your hands on provolone, you can try one of the following substitutes.
