What Is Annie’s Stance On Gmos

Annies uses only non-GMO ingredients. We are committed to supporting organic farming, which by definition means non-GMO, because it has positive impacts on soil health, biodiversity, water quality, animal welfare and more. Organic farming minimizes synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, while also using crop rotations, biological pest control, and other innovative approaches. Annies has been a longtime supporter of Just Label It, the national labeling campaign. Additionally, we participate in the Non-GMO Project, an independent verification group for best practices for GMO avoidance.

General Mills Purchased Annie’s Homegrown For Almost A Billion Dollars

In 2014, General Mills bought Annie’s for $820 million. Some customers expressed concern that Annie’s was “selling out” and would add artificial ingredients to their food to cut costs, but Foraker, Annie’s CEO, reassured customers that Annie’s would remain committed to GMO-free products and stressed that the acquisition would help Annie’s get into the homes of more people. Annie’s was incorporated into GM’s Small Planet Foods, the company’s organic/natural foods branch.

  • The Best Boxed Vegan Mac And Cheese: Verdict

    Annie

In my experience, there is a learning curve when it comes learning how to cook a brand new diet. Sometimes it feels like all the things you grew up eating are now off the menu!

But nowadays there really are a lot of options. There are oodles of companies that specialize in vegan foods, and the choices are constantly expanding as more and more people eliminate meat, dairy, and eggs from their diets.

After reviewing four of the most popular boxed mac and cheese vegan options out there, the clear winner for my family and I was Annies Creamy Sauce Vegan Mac. We loved that you can taste the subtle pumpkin and sweet potato in the sauce, it tasted fresh, natural, healthy, and delicious!

When it comes to vegan dairy alternatives, there is always a danger of something tasting off or artificial. I found that many of the boxed vegan mac and cheese brands have this problem and I hope they will continue developing their recipes to come up with flavors that are more natural.

What is your favorite boxed vegan mac and cheese brand? Leave your thoughts in the comments I love to hear from you!

Broccoli + Cheddar Mac & Cheese

Heres a simple trick. Put uncooked broccoli into a pot of boiling shells at the last 3-4 minutes of cooking time. Youve successfully cooked broccoli AND Mac & Cheese. Its a two-fer situation! I like to make sure that I have more broccoli than mac in my bowl. Thats what I like to call balance!

    • 1 box prepared Annies Organic Shells & Real Aged Cheddar
    • 8-10 broccoli florets
    • 1/3 cup sharp cheddar, shredded

Cook shells according to package directions. When shells have about four minutes left in the cooking time, add broccoli florets and finish cooking. Drain shells and broccoli, place both back in the pot and continue following the directions with the additions of butter, milk and flavor packet. Stir in cheddar and serve immediately.

    Crab Cake Mac And Cheese

The result is a mac that lies somewhere between crab cake and cheesy pasta perfection.

Meet The Annie Behind Annies Mac And Cheese

Ever wonder whether Annies mac and cheese is named after a real person? Turns out, it isand Annie Withey, the woman behind the brand, also invented Smartfood popcorn, SFGate reported. The $15 million windfall from the sale of Smartfood to Kraft in 1989 allowed her to focus on her real passion: pasta. And the rest is history. Withey assumed the title of inspirational president when Solera Capital took a majority stake in Annies in 2002, then left when the company was sold to General Mills in 2014. Now, she lives in Connecticut with seven sheep, two horses, and a handful of other animals. Which isnt too far from what we mightve imagined, had we been tasked with coming up with a backstory for the person who brought us bunny-shaped noodles and Parmesan peace pasta.

How Annies Vegan Mac And Cheese Tasted

I served my Annies vegan mac and cheese with some nutritional yeast and extra paprika to add a little zest, but I also tasted it on its own. This stuff is really good by itself: Annies did a great job being assertive with flavors to ensure that the product was not bland. That being said, adding nutritional yeast and paprika made it even more cheesy and flavorful.

Although it has been a long time since I myself have eaten real mac and cheese, I found that Annies vegan mac and cheese was almost scarily similar to the comfort dish I grew up eating. The sauce comes out thick, creamy and bright yellow without any artificial coloring, tricking the taste-buds and mind alike.

What Are The Best Milk Substitutes To Make Mac And Cheese With

The best non-dairy milk substitutes for mac and cheese include: plain oat milk, soy milk, non-dairy cream or whipping cream, cashew milk, goat milk and coconut milk. Some of these have stronger flavors than others and will potentially alter the flavor of your mac and cheese in a subtle way and others will not alter the flavor at all. Use a 1:1 ratio when substituting any of these non-dairy milk products.

Tips For The Best Stovetop Mac And Cheese

If you prefer mac and cheese with a crunchier topping, Im sure you could add breadcrumbs to the top and bake it in a 400F oven until its as crisped on the top as you like, although I havent personally gone this route.

If you dont like your cheese to be quite as sharp, I recommend going with sharp rather than extra-sharp white cheddar. But for us, we relish a little extra bite and sharpness. You may say this mac and cheese tastes a bit more grown up than varieties made with basic or mild cheddar.

I highly recommend grating the cheese by hand on the coarsest blade of a box grater . Pre-grated cheese in bags can be coated with chemicals that can make it resistant to melting smoothly which would be a disaster here.

I dont know that Ive ever actually seen white cheddar cheese in bags usually white cheeses like mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or Pepper Jack are the usual bagged varieties but just pointing it out to avoid bagged cheese for this recipe and go with a brick of cheese.

If youve ever wondered whether you can make kraft mac and cheese with almond milk, the answer is yes! This dairy-free alternative works just as well as regular milk, and your finished dish will be just as creamy and delicious. With just a few simple substitutions, you can enjoy kraft mac and cheese without any dairy at all. So go ahead and indulge in this classic comfort food, guilt-free.
