What Makes Cheese & Dairy Products Halal

The Rise And Fall Of Kraft Cheese | Rise And Fall

Much like The Vinegar Page, I have written this one because cheese and dairy products are the source of a lot of questions I get about whether or not some of their ingredients are derived from halal and dhabiha sources. This involves everything from hard cheeses like Parmesanto deli cheeses, sour cream, crème frâiche, buttermilk, regular milk, yogurt, and so on. I hope to address those issues below.

I dont claim to be a scholar or even a somewhat-expert on this subject, as it is complicated and ever-changing due to the nature of our modern food industry and the amount of food companies as well as how often they may change their formulas for one single product in their line of multiple food products. Wow, that was a mouthful

So, I simply hope to provide some information here that serves as a starting point for you with links to other reputable and informative sites that are dedicated to the specific issues described. I consider it a working document to be updated as things within the food industry fluctuate and change as time goes on.

Here goes

The four areas of cheese and dairy products which derive the most questioning are: 1) enzymes 2) rennet 3) whey 4) rind

What are Enzymes and Where Do they Come From?

This link contains an explanation of enzymes, but for the purpose of this page, most of our focus will be on rennet, a type of enzyme from which cheese and dairy products are made.

Kraft Cheese American Singles

A pack of Kraft mac and cheese 7.25 oz box has the following ingredients:

  • Macaroni enriched with wheat flour, ferrous sulfate, durum flour, niacin, and vitamin B1 , vitamin B2, Folic acid, and cheese sauce mix.
  • The cheese sauce mix would contain milk fat, whey, milk protein concentrate, salt, sodium triphosphate, lactic acid, citric acid, sodium phosphate, calcium phosphate, turmeric, less than 2 percent of tapioca flour, and annatto.

Annatto is added to provide color to the cheese. Other than the animal ingredients which were taken from beef and lamb, there were no other non-vegetarian ingredients observed.

It is also important to note that the other cheese products that are produced using microbial rennet instead of animal enzymes would be labeled on the cheese so that the vegans can get an idea of whether the cheese is vegetarian or non-vegetarian.

Are Kraft Singles Vegetarian

Many cheeses in the US are vegetarian, as they use a microbial rennet source. Still, there are places that use animal-derived rennet sources. Products made with animal-derived rennet sources are not vegetarian. Rennet that comes from an animal is from the stomach lining of a slaughtered cow, sheep, or goat. Some places also use rennet derived from slaughtered pigs. So to answer the question that many people have:

Are Kraft singles vegetarian? No, they are not!

Here is the statement from the company regarding the enzymes used in Kraft singles:

“The process of converting milk into cheese is dependent on coagulating through the use of an enzyme. The enzymes in this product are sourced from both microbial fermentations and animal sources. The animal sources are cow, sheep, and goat.”

Kraft singles are not vegetarian because they use rennet derived from the stomach’s of slaughtered cow, sheep, and goat.

The good news is that today there are many great vegetarian alternatives that are also vegan and readily available in the stores! Check the produce department at nearby mainstream stores. Even places like Walmart, Target, Publix, and other mainstream grocery stores carry vegetarian and vegan cheeses that taste good. Try the different brands to find your favorite, including Chao, Follow Your Heart, and others!

Re: Which Cheese Is Halal

Cheese making developed differently in different parts of the world. The European hard cheeses do not need to be made with rennet and the old methods did not use rennet. Also the old cottage cheeses and the Hard cheeses made with it did not use rennet.Rennet came about from the mid-eastern Arabs where it was common practice to use the stomachs of goats as milk containers. Cheese was the result of storing milk. Some other things that have been and are used to produce cheese are various bacteria. The bacteria Penecillium has long been used for making Blue and Swiss cheese.Other sources of enzymes for cheese production are vinigar, Lemon juice and pepsin So with cheese either get your cheese that is certified V or from a trusted halal market or as last resort make your own. It really is simple to make and does not require much equipment. It takes about a gallon of milk to make one pound of cheese. You just need a good recipe and a starting culture. The starting culture can be yougart or cottage cheese. Here is a good link for cheese making supplies. Notice they sell vegetable rennet and cheese cultures. The Cultures are bacteria based and are non-rennet.

  • History Of Rennet Use In The United States

How to make the best Cheese Burgers Halal *Nazkitchenfun*

Steve Lutzke of Chr. Hansen, a leading enzyme company, said the supply of animal rennet was consistently high through the 1970s. Since its price was reasonable, cheesemakers had no reason to look for alternatives. Consequently, the majority of cheese produced in the United States at that time was made with animal rennet.

According to Lutzke, the 1980s saw animal rennet supplies become more inconsistent, resulting in price fluctuations and even product shortages. Dave Potter of Dairy Connection, Inc., of Wisconsin, a supplier of enzymes to many cheesemakers, attributed the decline of calf rennet use in cheesemaking and the inconsistent supplies of the animal enzyme to the faltering veal industry, which became more unstable in the 70s due to the animal protection movement. Rennet produced by microbial fermentation became more available. Approximately half of all rennet used in the 80s was microbial.

What kind of rennet do you use?A vital step in the process of making Tillamook cheese is the formation of cheese curd. In order to begin this development, a material is added to coagulate the milk. This material is an enzyme, a natural protein substance, which can cause certain specific chemical changes to take place. Only extremely minute quantities of the enzyme are needed to coagulate the casein in milk. For centuries, the only known source of a satisfactory milk coagulant for cheesemaking was an animal-derived enzyme. This enzyme, named chymosin, is commonly referred to as rennet. We use the microbial/vegetable-based enzyme to make all Tillamook cheese, with the exception of Tillamook Vintage White Medium Cheddar and Vintage White Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheeses. Our unique flavor profile of Tillamook Vintage White is a result of using traditional rennet.

How To Detect Whether The Cheese Is Vegan Friendly

    • Dairy products that contain whey do not have rennet. This would include cream cheese, paneer, and ricotta.
    • If the ingredient list contains enzymes, it is likely to be non-vegetarian. Avoid using this cheese. If the label present on the cheese packet though mentions non-animal enzymes, then it would be safe to consume that cheese.
    • If you like parmesan cheese, you can check out vegan-friendly alternatives to parmesan cheese that can include Bel gioioso, Applegate, Amys, Cabot, and Horizon.
    • You can also look for certified Kosher cheese if you want a vegan-friendly alternative.
    • If the ingredient list mentions vegetable rennet, then it is safe to consume again. Vegetable rennets are prepared from plants like melon, thistle, safflower, and fig leaves.

This rennet might not be that effective as animal rennet would be. As a result, it would be used in larger quantities to produce cheese.

Us Products Made Without Pork Enzymes

Enzymes are occasionally used to produce a wide variety of food products. For example, most cheese is made using enzymes to help develop unique flavors. The enzymes used may come from vegetable, microbial and/or animal sources, depending on the particular cheese flavor being developed. Animal enzymes that are derived from pork are used to develop the cheese in some of our cheese seasonings.

For those in the U.S. choosing to restrict pork-related ingredients from their diets, the following list contains some Frito-Lay snacks that do not contain pork enzymes. If you do not see your favorite Frito-Lay snack on this list, please feel free to contact our Frito-Lay Consumer Relations Team for more information. Another guide that may be helpful is the list of Kosher products, which may also be found on this website.

What Are Kraft Singles And Velveeta Really Made Of

Uh, no one pass the queso, please

Why is that cheese pull in your halved bacon egg and cheese so perfect? Because the cheese isnt real. If you couldnt already tell from their fluorescent colors, Kraft American cheese and Velveeta arent really cheese in the truest sense of the word. A more accurate description would be something like cheese products, or cheese foodstheyre actually mixtures of old cheese bits blended smooth by emulsifiers, then processed to be melty. In a video produced by Tech Insider, research chemist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Michael Tunick describes that J.L. Kraft was simply trying to get rid of some of his older cheeses, and thought it best to just melt all the unusable pieces together with some other stuff, inventing American cheese singles.

Other cheese manufacturers followed Krafts example, and thus American cheese became the standard in essentially every breakfast sandwich and grilled cheese. Tunick notes that its completely legal to market these mixtures of old and new cheese as cheese as long as they are labeled pasteurized processed cheese spread or pasteurized processed cheese food. According to Tunick, the cheese products have to follow certain fat and moisture contents and also sometimes they have to be able to melt at a certain temperature. Uh, no one pass the queso, please.
