What Do I Serve With A Ham And Cheese Sandwich

How to Make a Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich

While the ham and cheese sandwich is the star of the show, you will most likely want something to go with it. Here are a few ideas that will give you a complete meal:

  • Potato Chips I like to serve chips because there is no work involved. Just open the bag and jump in.

  • French Fries You can choose between crinkle cuts, waffle style, steak, or even homemade fries. They all taste amazing so you cant go wrong!

  • Pasta salad A comfort food dish like this Dill Pickle Pasta Salad would be fantastic with this sandwich!

  • Soup an excellent hearty Tomato Basil or Beef and rice vegetable soup make a meal that is incredible.

Hot Ham And Cheese Sandwiches:

These sandwiches are so easy to make it’s one of those that I almost feel silly calling a “recipe” but I hope you all love them as much as my family does, and I’ll tell you how I like to perfect them at my house!

  • You can use thick or thin ham, whichever you like. I always get the super thin sliced ham straight from my deli. Then, I layer a few pieces of ham, then a piece of cheese. I repeat the layers twice for a nice hearty sandwich.
  • Toasting the buns is totally optional. I butter them, then toast under the broiler for about 2 minutes before assembling the sandwiches. If you like a softer bun, don’t toast them first.
  • You can use any kind of cheese obviously, whatever your family prefers! We love mozzarella cheese the best, but of course, Swiss, cheddar or Monterey Jack are also great!
  • The dijonnaise is also optional. It’s simply a mixture of mayonnaise and spicy or dijon mustard. Just adds some extra flavor and we happen to love it.

A quick note about cooking these sandwiches. I typically bake them at home for a super fast 10 minute dinner. However, you can absolutely grill these as well! There a great sandwich for camping. You will just want to assemble the sandwiches, wrap in foil, and grill for a few minutes until the cheese is melted.

Enjoy!

What Types Of Bread Go Well With Ham And Cheese Sandwich

Again, bread is one of these things that you can your favorites. There are so many flavors, textures, and styles of bread! You can go as wild as you want and the result will be terrific! Here are a few of my favorite choices:

Artisan A tasty bread that has mild flavors and is soft and chewy. You cant go wrong using this type of bread. I used artisan bread today, but with the twist of grilling it, hence the Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich. However, the sandwich police wont be alerted if you simply want to keep it plain, soft and chewy!

Sourdough A sourdough bread is easier to digest and usually the signature tangy flavor goes well with ham and cheese. Put it together and grill it up it would be an amazing grilled ham and cheese sammy!!

Pita they are a pocket that you can fill will all kinds of wonderful ingredients. Typically you dont grill with Pita bread, BUT theres nothing saying you cant! I would totally give this a try! All that ham and cheese in a non-drippy pocket? Oh yeahhh.

English Muffins you can turn your sandwich idea into breakfast with an English muffin such as these super easy Breakfast Eggers! Plus, because they are so strong, they are easy to grab and go when you are in a hurry.

Whole Wheat I love the taste of whole wheat bread, and it is one of my go-to bread choices. Its a basic but somewhat healthier version of white bread. It would do very well if you were to grill it with the sandwich ingredients.

Best Cheese For Cold Sandwiches

In this recipe, I use some mature Irish cheddar cheese which is just wonderful and tasty and easy for us to purchase locally. I always prefer using an older and more matured cheese for these type of sandwiches. My preference is also to use cheese I have sliced myself rather than processed cheese slices. I just think it tastes better.

But of course, again the options are infinite. Different countries all have their own different cheeses and you will find that many of them, even though perhaps not what you are used to eating, are quite delicious.

If you are in Switzerland for example, you may find some slices of Emmentaler or Gruyère in your ham and cheese sandwich.

When we lived in the Netherlands, a slice of medium strength Gouda cheese would normally find its way into the lunchtime sandwiches. All these cheeses will change the character of your sandwich, so choose what you prefer.

Questions You May Have

Whats the best tea to serve with these finger sandwiches?

A black tea would go perfectly with the hearty flavors of this sandwich. Itll hold up well through the richness from the ham and the Swiss cheese. I would recommend Earl Grey or English breakfast tea.

Yes! But avoid using cookie cutters with too much detailing since it wont be as easy to cut and stack evenly.

To make sandwiches ahead of time, assemble sandwiches the night before and loosely cover them with wax paper then a damp paper towel in an airtight container in the refrigerator. How To Make The Best Ham & Cheese Sandwich

Ham, cheese and tomato sandwich

We just dont eat enough grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. In part, thats because theyre so easy to make six steps! that we forget just how amazing they can be. Dont think a ham and cheese sandwich will blow your mind? We dare you to try this recipe.

We slather a very soft sourdough bread with butter and a tangy Dijon-mayonnaise, and then put it in a hot skillet. While its toasting, we pile on the nutty Gruyère, thin ribbons of ham, and fresh tomatoes. The result is sublime: Crispy, golden brown bread, gooey cheese, and wonderfully salty ham. Our favorite part might be the way the melty cheese, tomato, and Dijon-mayo combine so that theyre almost saucy. It makes the whole thing feel elevated shades of croque monsieur.

Its rich, its indulgent, and its worth it! This is the kind of sandwich you can serve as a meal its quite filling. And yet, for that very reason, it also makes a terrific snack. You could grill up a double recipe, cut the sandwiches into quarters, and serve them as a movie night bite your family will go wild. How Do You Make This Grilled Ham And Cheese Melt

How to Cook a Grown-Ups Ham and Cheese Grilled Sandwich

So with todays grilled sandwich, I simply used the artisan bread that I mentioned earlier. Keep in mind, this sandwich is plenty big for two people to share. If you serve it with some of the things I mentioned above, two people can enjoy this epic sandwich!!

I cut two nice big slices and then buttered one side of it. This buttered side will be the BOTTOM layer of the sandwich.

After that, I just started layering the ingredients. I like putting cheese on both the bottom and top, kind of sandwiching the ham in the middle.

Then, put the other piece of bread on top of the cheese. I buttered the outside so that when you flip the sandwich in the pan, will become the bottom piece. I know it might sound confusing, but in the recipe below, I explain it a bit better!

I used a nice thin black forest ham for this sandwich. I like the briny flavor against the creamy, gooey-ness of the melted cheddar. Which, btw, was an old or sharp cheddar. And as a side note, please use butter, not margarine for the bread. This kind of sandwich is just taken to the next level when you use real butter!

The other key is to fry it low and slow. If you grill it too quickly, the bread will burn before the cheese melts. You want the sandwich to warm slowly, so the cheese gets a chance to get all melty and yummy as the bread toasts or, grills, in the pan.

When its done grilling, turn it out onto a nice board and give it a minute or two to settle. Then slice, and ENJOY!!
