What Makes A Good Melting Cheese
The best way to determine whether a particular kind of cheese will work well as a melting cheese is by looking at the ingredients list. Look for cheeses without artificial flavors, dyes, emulsifiers, stabilizers, thickeners, fillers, binders, or other additives.
These things tend to make the cheese harder and less likely to melt properly. Also, look for cheeses that dont contain hydrogenated fats.
Good melting cheese is one that has a lot of moisture, like mozzarella or brie, but also has a lot of fat. It would crumble and be more helpful in a salad if it simply had a little fat. Here, were cooking grilled cheese and pouring it over nachos, not salad. When preparing a fondue, keep in mind that the cheese will not melt by itself it will require milk to melt into, and depending on your preferences, you may not even need a thickener to get the desired consistency.
How Long Does Gouda Cheese Last
If Gouda is properly stored, it will last about three weeks in the fridge. To achieve the longest shelf life, wrap your piece gently in parchment paper, then set the wrapped cheese in an unsealed plastic bag or wrap it loosely in plastic wrap.
Keep it towards the bottom of your fridge–ideally in a vegetable crisper drawer, because these areas tend to be slightly warmer.

Cheese Can Prevent Osteoporosis
Our parents always instructed us to drink our milk as children, telling us that the calcium and vitamin D would help us to build strong bones. The truth is our bone mass continues to grow throughout childhood and adolescence, reaching its peak density around age 30. From there, the aging process begins to thin our bones over time. It is easy to see that the greater your bone density is at this point, the less effect aging will have on your skeletal integrity.
Unfortunately, inadequate bone mass can contribute to the development of osteoporosis later in life. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by fragile, porous bones, and it affects over 10 million Americans, 80% of which are women. It is the leading cause of fractures, with 1.5 million estimated each year . The cause can be attributed to low consumption or poor absorption of calcium, which causes the bones to slowly break down .
Balanced nutrition can help you avoid the development of osteoporosis. You need to ensure you are receiving adequate amounts or protein, calcium, and vitamin D. The World Health Organization recommends a minimum daily intake of 400 to 500 mg of calcium per day for people over 50 and at risk for fractures . Dairy products, particularly cheese fortified with vitamin D, can be a great way to consume the correct balance of vitamins and minerals.
Bottom Line: Increasing your calcium and protein intake with cheese can keep your bones strong, and help prevent osteoporosis.

Best Ways To Use Creamy Cheese Dip
My family and I love this cheese sauce as a quick and easy dip for fries. I can put a batch of fries in the oven to bake and have the dip ready by the time the fries are done.
Kids especially love dipping the fries but you can also make a plate of cheese fries by covering the fries with cheese sauce and toppings like jalapenos and onion straws.
The creaminess of sauce makes it an especially good complement to Spicy Sweet Potato Fries! I love the simplicity of this dish, and how quick and easy it is to take fries from the ordinary to the gourmet!
Other great suggestions for using this homemade cheese sauce include:
- Use as a dip for pretzels or pretzel bites
- Use for tortilla chips as a nacho cheese sauce
- Cook up some pasta and make everyones favorite mac and cheese
- The creamy cheese sauce is a great topping for vegetables like broccoli or cauliflower. Just a little bit of creamy cheese can encourage kids to eat vegetables they might not love. And in my house this works on adults too!

Where Does Gouda Cheese Come From
Contrary to what you might think, Gouda cheese is not actually made in the city of Gouda, but rather, it is traditionally bought and sold in Gouda. Way back in the Middle Ages, towns could earn the rights to trade certain commodities. The town of Gouda had the rights to trade cheese, so thats where people went to buy and sell cheese!
Nowadays, Gouda refers more to the style of cheesemaking than the actual cheese, as Gouda cheeses can vary widely depending on age. For this reason, the name Gouda isnt protected or meant to define only the cheese coming from Gouda. If you want the real deal, look for Noord-Hollandse Gouda, as this title is protected and can only represent true Dutch Gouda made with Dutch milk.
