What About The Pizza
So there’s no more animatronic band, and a fight could break out at any moment… but how’s the food?
The good news is, the food, including the pizza, might actually be a lot better than you remember it. In 2011, the restaurants all transitioned to freshly made dough and freshly grated cheeses. In 2015, CEC Entertainment issued a press release stating that Chuck E. Cheese’s pizza had beaten out rival Pizza Hut in a blind taste test. The menu also has some more adult-friendly choices that you may not remember from years gone by. Currently, diners can choose from both thin and traditional crust pizzas, and gourmet pizzas like BBQ chicken and Cali Alfredo. Wraps and sandwiches are available, as are chicken wings, salads, and hot desserts. In keeping with the times, gluten-free pizza crusts and desserts are available as well. Some locations have even gotten a little more hip with their offerings, with choices like a “Chucktober” candy-corn pizza, and a “Mac-cheesy” pie, covered with mac and cheese.
The Characters Have An Odd Fate
If you’ve been missing your old favorite characters for far too long, and you have some extra room in your basement, you may have been considered getting your hands on some of the old animatronics. It may seem like it shouldn’t be too hard, considering the company’s decision to remove the robot characters from all locations, you would think a wave of Chuck E. Cheese’s characters are about to flood the market. But it’s not that easy.
Chuck E. Cheese’s has a rather bizarre policy of destroying their characters once they’re retired. In the case of the actual Chuck E. Cheese character costume, which is worn by an employee who walks around, high-fiving guests, one restaurant location was filmed demolishing the head with a sledgehammer, though the normal policy would see the costume shipped to a warehouse where the deed could be performed out of eyesight. Meredith Rose, an intellectual property attorney who once worked in a New Jersey Chuck E. Cheese’s location, tells Atlas Obscura, “If you own this intellectual property writ large, you don’t want a secondary market to pop up.”
But where there is a will, there’s a way. Sets of the old characters do occasionally appear on Craigslist, like a 1985 Beach Bowzers set that asked a cool $5,000. A Rock-afire Explosion Band also appeared back in 2008 on eBay for a very reasonable $14,000.

After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2020 and creating a plan of reorganization confirmed by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Dec. 15, Chuck E. Cheese parent company CEC Entertainment announced on Dec. 30 that the company completed its financial restructuring and emerged from Chapter 11 protection. The company emerged from bankruptcy with $705 million of debt obligations paid off under new ownership and a new leadership board.

Chuck E. Cheese is making some major changes.
The entertainment center chain announced a big remodel back in 2017, but customers are finally starting to see the new look nationwide. By the end of 2019, over 80 locations will have been remodeled, a representative for Chuck E. Cheese tells PEOPLE.
Chuck E. Cheese is jumping into the new decade by revitalizing their brand and axing some of their most iconic looks for a more fresh, modern appearance complete with a new logo and color scheme, refined signage, interactive light-up dance floor, and brighter lighting.
Theyll slowly be replacing their tokens with an All You Can Play model, so parents can simply load up a pass or wristband with time and allow kids to play as many games as they want during that period. That means more tickets and more prizes. Plus, kids wont have to ask their parents for more tokens every ten minutes.
Perhaps the most shocking consequence of the change is the departure of their famous animatronic band, as previously eulogized by Father John Misty, in favor of a centralized dance floor where kids feet light up the floor as they move around.
Not all of their locations have been affected yet, though. Until remodels start at a location, guests can still go and stock up on tokens and enjoy the last days of the robot performers.

By 2012, CEC was struggling with decreasing revenue. They ran a rebranding campaign, changing the rat mascot into a rock star guitar-playing mouse. In-store restaurant sales continued to decline through 2013 but merchandising and box office revenue increased.

CEC Entertainment , which also owns Peter Piper Pizza, said it plans to use the bankruptcy proceedings to talk to stakeholders and landlords and to restructure its balance sheet, as the outbreak ravages the entertainment and leisure industries globally.
Already loss making, the outbreak shut the door on a rebound as sales plunged after restaurants were forced to close as lockdowns were put in place. Chuck E. Cheese was hit especially hard owing to its childrens party and games venues.
Irving, Texas-based CEC, which was taken private by Apollo Global Management in a leveraged buyout in 2014, joins a growing list of high-profile corporate collapses due to the ongoing health crisis.
