Finish Your Grilled Cheese With A Crispy Cheesy Outer Crust

This is a trick that my grandmother Mimi used to pull off. Maybe you have encountered it at a restaurant and wondered how it works. It can be a little tricky, depending on how non-stick your pan is. If you have a well-seasoned cast iron skillet, its worth a shot.

Simply sprinkle some additional grated cheese over your buttery skillet, and flip the hot sandwich over on top of it. Listen, and once the cheese has stopped sizzling, wait a few more moments longer before flipping it back over. Ta da.

Non-stick skillet notes: I have always recommended using cast iron or stainless steel skillets when possible, since theyre non-toxic. When I worked on this post, Id been testing out a non-stick ceramic skillet from Green Pan. While it was non-stick enough to successfully make these sandwiches, Im no longer recommending this pan. See the section on ceramic non-stick pans over here.

Use Panini Or Sandwich Grill

Another option is to use a panini grill, or a sandwich grill. They operate in much the same way, so you can use any of them. The thing here is that the press might break the sandwich open, so itd be a good idea to not lock it closed. Only let it close as much as it can, maybe turn the sandwich halfway.

You get a really crispy bread this way, and the inside will be warm but may or may not be runny. It really depends on what cheese you use.

Can I Reheat Grilled Cheese In A Microwave

Easy Bacon Brie Gourmet Grilled Cheese

Look, you can reheat grilled cheese in the microwave just fine. The only problem is that you need to use a lid or cover, otherwise some parts will get extra dry and some will get no heat.

But if you do this, you trap steam and end up with a soft, possibly soggy sandwich. We think this can be fixed, but it involves a frying pan. In which case youre better off using it from the start.

But if youre at work or in a hurry and dont mind the change in texture than go right ahead and microwave it, no one will stop you. The taste will be mostly the same.

And thats about it about grilled cheese ! Hopefully you found a way that works for you and you can enjoy it the day after. If youve got any other food curiosities be sure to check the related articles below, were always adding more food facts to make your life that much easier.

How To Set Up A Grilled Cheese Bar

1. Pull out whatever bread you have on hand and set it out on one end of your grilled cheese bar: Sliced whole wheat, levain, walnut bread, English muffins, German rye, bagels, cinnamon raisin, pita, crusty French, you name it.

2. Set out the cheeses. Grate firm cheeses such as Cheddar, Gruyère, Parmesan, and Monterey Jack. Crumble or spread softer cheeses such as feta and chevre. Any variety of cheese will do. Even a wedge of Brie can be sliced and grilled into oozy deliciousness.

3. Rummagethrough the fridge and fruit bowl for grilled cheese-friendly produce: spinach, cucumber, mushrooms, broccoli raab, tomato, avocado, pear, and apple. Sauté those that demand it, slice the rest up raw.

4. Set out any cold cuts you like: ham, turkey, and prosciutto work well here.

5. Arrange any number of condiments and flavorful extras: mustard, pesto, sliced pickles, caramelized onions, sun-dried tomatoes, pickled jalapeños, roasted red peppers, olive tapenade, fresh basil or thyme.

6. Invite family or friends or both to pick and choose among the offerings and assemble their sandwiches. A little guidance is good with younger kids. Littler appetites may do just fine with a half sandwich.

Delicious Ways To Get Creative With Your Grilled Cheese Sandwich:

1. Switch out your boring bread and try something different such as pumpernickel, rye, French bread, sourdough, or any of the whole grain breads. Make sure its not too thick or hole-y. Note: You can use bread like ciabatta if you choose, but youll have to add some thing to it so the cheese doesnt ooze all over the pan.

2. Play around with different cheeses. Try Swiss, Gouda, brie, mozzarella, pepper jack, Havarti, sharp cheddar, etc. for a scrumptiously cheesy difference. Stay away from non cheese!

3. Add different condiments to your grilled cheese sandwich. Give your cheesy goodness some extra oomph. Try spreading jam on one slice of bread. It will add an extra layer of flavor to the cheese. Some suggestions: grape jelly, strawberry, apricot, tomato jam, red pepper jelly, honey mustard, chipotle mayonnaise, cranberry relish, pesto, buffalo wing sauce, and so forth. A little cream cheese never hurt anyone either!

4. Take an ordinary grilled cheese sandwich and add protein to it. Sky is the limit here: sausage, pepperoni, lunch-meat, thinly sliced steak, chicken, tuna, corned beef, etc. The list goes on and on

5. Whats a sandwich without veggies? Avocado slices, tomatoes, caramelized onions, spinach, arugula, mushrooms, zucchini, and peppers work well.

6. Fruit can also work well with a grilled cheesesuch as thin slices of apples, pears, strawberries, peaches, or kiwi. Even dried cranberries, raisins, and currants are great options.

Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwich Tips

Want to make the best gourmet grilled cheese youve ever had? Just follow these easy tips!

  • Better ingredients = a better sandwich. As with all simple recipes, the better your ingredients are, the better your grilled cheese will be. I like mine with sourdough or good crusty bread and havarti or sharp cheddar cheese.
  • Use a good melting cheese. Because higher-moisture cheeses yield the best oozy, pull-apart sandwiches, steer clear of crumbly, hard types of cheese like Parmesan or manchego. I use havarti here , but gruyere, gouda, provolone, mozzarella, and white cheddar cheeses are all great choices for a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich.
  • Cover for even cooking. If the bread is browning faster than the cheese is melting, reduce the heat to low and cover the pan. The trapped heat will help melt the cheese before the bread gets too brown.
  • Save the leftover harissa. If you try this green harissa recipe , youll end up with some leftover. Save it for a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich on another day, or use it in something else entirely. I recommend scooping it onto tacos, avocado toast, grilled veggies, pizza slices, falafel, or a chickpea shawarma wrap! And for a more traditional harissa recipe, check out page 281 of my new cookbook, Love & Lemons Every Day.
