Process shots: spread outside of sandwich with mayo or butter and add to pan , fry both sides , slice in half .

Creamy goat cheese, spicy jam, salty ham, and peppery arugula are combined in the best ham sandwich youll ever eat.

Ill be serving this ham sandwich for holiday get-togethers, family movie night, easy lunches, and snacks throughout the year.

This post was originally sponsored by The National Pork Board and this sandwich was inspired by my trip to Sioux Falls, South Dakota a few years ago.

Weve made this amazing sandwich so many times over the past couple of years, I wanted to share it again, to make sure youll have the recipe fresh in your memory and at your fingertips when you have leftover ham in the house after Thanksgiving and Christmas this year.

Lets Make A Grilled Ham And Cheese Sandwich

My kids love grilled cheese, I know that we have it at least once a week if not more. The weekends are huge grilled cheese sandwich days, especially for lunch because theyre so easy and with a bowl of soup, its the perfect meal!

I think that this recipe is easy enough that even a little bit older kids are able to pitch in and learn to make them on their own. My 11-year-old guy has mastered the grilled cheese making and is always offering to make us dinner or lunch because he can whip these together in no time flat!

Grilled Ham and Cheese is just as easy because you just add some ham and mayo, but it gives the sandwich a whole new twist!

Topping Options To Make A Killer Sandwich

You can make your sandwich with just bread, meat and cheese if you desire. Nothing wrong with that my lovely!! But, depending on my mood, I like to add some extra toppings to change the flavor and texture. Here are a few of the things I love to use:

  • Fresh vegetables Tomatoes, green peppers, and avocado are just a few things I use from time to time. When you add sliced tomato to the sandwich, the heat softens the tomato, adding this lovely enhanced tomato flavor. The tomato slice itself adds a bit of extra moisture to the layers, which I find super tasty!

  • Condiments Spicy mustard, mayonnaise, honey mustard, and horseradish are some great options!
  • Other topping ideas Black olives, pickles, and banana peppers would also terrific!

Ham Cheese And Mustard Sandwich

You can also add a bit of mustard of your choice to the sandwich to make a ham mustard sandwich if you like. It does spice the sandwich up a bit more and give it a bit of kick. Some hot English Colmans mustard or some milder French Dijon mustard either will do the trick!

In most of these pictures, I have used some thinly cut ham from Aldi, but you could also try boiling and baking your own ham and using some homemade ham slices like in this ham sandwich picture below.

Homecooked ham sandwich

Home baked ham really does make a terrific sandwich , as the glaze also adds a lot of taste to the ham. We eat quite a lot of homecooked ham, especially around Christmas time.

The choices of ham are of course these days also quite plentiful. So rather than some simple Aldi ham, why not treat yourself to some dry-aged Spanish Serrano ham, Italian Prosciutto or French jambon if you can get some? All delicious in a ham and cheese sandwich.

Freshly ground pepper

This is a very simple, quick and easy recipe for a sandwich that can be used in a packed lunch, whilst travelling or just as a great snack idea.

What Types Of Bread Go Well With Ham And Cheese Sandwich

Again, bread is one of these things that you can your favorites. There are so many flavors, textures, and styles of bread! You can go as wild as you want and the result will be terrific! Here are a few of my favorite choices:

Artisan A tasty bread that has mild flavors and is soft and chewy. You cant go wrong using this type of bread. I used artisan bread today, but with the twist of grilling it, hence the Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich. However, the sandwich police wont be alerted if you simply want to keep it plain, soft and chewy!

Sourdough A sourdough bread is easier to digest and usually the signature tangy flavor goes well with ham and cheese. Put it together and grill it up it would be an amazing grilled ham and cheese sammy!!

Pita they are a pocket that you can fill will all kinds of wonderful ingredients. Typically you dont grill with Pita bread, BUT theres nothing saying you cant! I would totally give this a try! All that ham and cheese in a non-drippy pocket? Oh yeahhh.

English Muffins you can turn your sandwich idea into breakfast with an English muffin such as these super easy Breakfast Eggers! Plus, because they are so strong, they are easy to grab and go when you are in a hurry.

Whole Wheat I love the taste of whole wheat bread, and it is one of my go-to bread choices. Its a basic but somewhat healthier version of white bread. It would do very well if you were to grill it with the sandwich ingredients.

How Do You Make This Grilled Ham And Cheese Melt

So with todays grilled sandwich, I simply used the artisan bread that I mentioned earlier. Keep in mind, this sandwich is plenty big for two people to share. If you serve it with some of the things I mentioned above, two people can enjoy this epic sandwich!!

I cut two nice big slices and then buttered one side of it. This buttered side will be the BOTTOM layer of the sandwich.

After that, I just started layering the ingredients. I like putting cheese on both the bottom and top, kind of sandwiching the ham in the middle.

Then, put the other piece of bread on top of the cheese. I buttered the outside so that when you flip the sandwich in the pan, will become the bottom piece. I know it might sound confusing, but in the recipe below, I explain it a bit better!

I used a nice thin black forest ham for this sandwich. I like the briny flavor against the creamy, gooey-ness of the melted cheddar. Which, btw, was an old or sharp cheddar. And as a side note, please use butter, not margarine for the bread. This kind of sandwich is just taken to the next level when you use real butter!

The other key is to fry it low and slow. If you grill it too quickly, the bread will burn before the cheese melts. You want the sandwich to warm slowly, so the cheese gets a chance to get all melty and yummy as the bread toasts or, grills, in the pan.

When its done grilling, turn it out onto a nice board and give it a minute or two to settle. Then slice, and ENJOY!!

Ham And Cheese Cornbread Sandwich

This sandwich calls for homemade cornbread for an absolutely Southern experience, but feel free to buy pre-made cornbread for an equally tasty result. Make special “chow chow” mayo and spread a generous amount on your warm cornbread. Top with cheddar cheese, thinly sliced baked ham, and jalapeños.

If you’re making the cornbread at home, the sandwich takes a total of 35 minutes to be ready, but only 10 if you’re using premade cornbread.

Serve with a spicy carrot salad.

These simple hot ham and cheese sandwiches are perfect for a quick lunch or supper. Made of ham, cheese, spices, olive oil and vinegar, this isnt just any ham sandwich!

Okay, everyone knows how to make a ham and cheese sandwich. I know, but let me tell you, this sandwich is not the average ham sandwich. It is anything but. The flavors from the herbs, oil, vinegar mingle together to make this sandwich extra special.

For some time now, this has been one of those sandwiches that I like to just keep in my arsenal of quick, easy and absolutely delicious go-to recipes. My whole family loves it, Sams friends love it, and it just couldnt get much easier to prepare.

I like to start with a crusty on the outside, yet soft on the inside style sandwich bread. Sometimes Ill grab them from the bakery at the grocery store and then sometimes I just pick up a pack of these individual sized ones from the bread aisle. Just go with a bread that you love and that holds up.

While my oven is preheating, I grab a rimmed sheet pan or two and begin slicing open my bread for assembling the sandwiches. Heres the key, I drizzle olive oil and red wine vinegar on both the top and the bottom interior pieces of the bread. Then, I sprinkle them with dried oregano and dried basil. Of course, you can use fresh oregano and basil if youd like and you have it on hand. It is amazing!

How To Make A Ham And Cheese Sandwich

These sandwiches are so easy to make it’s one of those that I almost feel silly calling a “recipe” but I hope you all love them as much as my family does, and I’ll tell you how I like to perfect them at my house!

  • You can use thick or thin ham, whichever you like. I always get the super thin sliced ham straight from my deli. Then, I layer a few pieces of ham, then a piece of cheese. I repeat the layers twice for a nice hearty sandwich.
  • Toasting the buns is totally optional. I butter them, then toast under the broiler for about 2 minutes before assembling the sandwiches. If you like a softer bun, don’t toast them first.
  • You can use any kind of cheese obviously, whatever your family prefers! We love mozzarella cheese the best, but of course, Swiss, cheddar or Monterey Jack are also great!
  • The dijonnaise is also optional. It’s simply a mixture of mayonnaise and spicy or dijon mustard. Just adds some extra flavor and we happen to love it.

A quick note about cooking these sandwiches. I typically bake them at home for a super fast 10 minute dinner. However, you can absolutely grill these as well! There a great sandwich for camping. You will just want to assemble the sandwiches, wrap in foil, and grill for a few minutes until the cheese is melted.

Enjoy!
