Option : Use A Slow Cooker

Your next option is to use a slow cooker. Just like in the microwave method, the first thing you need to do is shred the cheese into smaller pieces.

For this method, we recommend using a pound of Velveeta cheese. You should add the cheese straight into the slow cooker and cover it, leaving it to boil on low heat for approximately 30 minutes.

Please note that this method does not require you to add any butter or milk to the slow cooker as you are cooking it on a very low heat.

To stop the cheese from getting clumpy, we recommend regularly stirring it throughout the 30 minutes that it is in the slow cooker.

Once the 30 minutes have passed, you should replace the lid on the slow cooker and leave the cheese to cook for between 1-2 hours.

During this time you should not stir the cheese or remove the lid as this could damage its consistency. After this, the cheese will be ready to serve, so simply keep it warm until you are ready to eat.

    Best Cheese For Homemade Velveeta

This recipe has been on MOMables for a long time, and Ive gotten a lot of questions about the best types of cheese to use for it over the years.

We know that not all white American cheeses are made equal. A simple test to be sure youre getting the good stuff is to check the ingredients.

You dont have to read everything on the list, but some American cheeses dont really expire. YIKES. In that case, take a pass and move on to the next option.

Another hint that you should find a new cheese is if it says cheese product on the packaging. If you see that phrase, its probably not real.

For both recipes, I purchased cheese from the deli counter in a big chunk dont use sliced cheese.

    How To Make It

See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

Brown the ground beef and drain any excess grease. Add beer and simmer for 4-5 minutes.

Add Velveeta and Cheddar Jack Cheese, let it melt and stir until smooth.

Add Black Beans, Cilantro, and Red Onions. Stir to combine.

Add Rotel tomatoes and any excess tomato juice until desired consistency is reached. Stir to combine and serve!

PRO TIP: I like to use my 10-inch cast iron skillet for this recipe. Cast iron conducts heat really well and makes everything super flavorful.

This dip can easily be made in the slow cooker. Simply brown and drain the ground beef or sausage as directed and drain. Combine all ingredients in a mini crock pot/slow cooker and set to low 2-3 hours stirring occasionally until melted. Once melted, turn slow cooker to warm.

Even if you cook this recipe on the stove top, using a slow cooker on warm is a great way to serve it at a party! Rotel dip can harden once cooled making it difficult to scoop. If this happens, simply reheat on the stove top or in the microwave until dippable again!

At the forefront of Velveetas list of ingredients are milk, water, whey, and milk protein concentrate. Milk protein concentrate is a concentrated milk product that contains 40-90% milk.

As far as the U.S. government is concerned, MPC is not an ingredient found in a cheese spread. The FDA ruled that because MPC was listed as an ingredient, Kraft could not identify this velvety, smooth product as a cheese spread, but rather a cheese product.

So is it technically real cheese? No. It is not, however, it is absolutely perfect for making Velveeta Cheese Dip.

    Using A Double Boiler

Cut the Velveeta cheese into bite-sized cubes that are roughly around ½ inch by ½ inch cubes. Doing so will help the cheese to melt faster. In the lower half of a double boiler, bring some water to a rolling boil. Reduce the heat. Add a dollop of butter to the smaller vessel or the upper half of the double boiler and allow it to melt. This will prevent the cheese from sticking to the bowl. Add in the cheese to the butter and stir it in well. Mix it continuously with a spoon till it melts thoroughly.

Note: As you havent added in any milk to the cheese, you will get thick creamy cheese, and the cheese might solidify as its temperature cools.

    How to Make Velveeta Cheese

Alternatively, you might choose to melt your Velveeta cheese in a saucepan.

You might have already guessed the first step of this method by now, and that is to shred the cheese into cubes of approximately ½ inch in size.

You should then take your saucepan and add a small knob of butter to it. With the saucepan warming up, regularly stir the butter until it has all melted.

Once the butter has melted, you should then add the cheese that you shredded earlier into the saucepan. After you have added the cheese, you must regularly stir the mixture to prevent it from sticking or burning.

Also, ensure that you dig into the bottom of the pan to ensure nothing gets stuck at the bottom. Once the cheese has melted you should then add 7 tablespoons of milk into the cheese to give it a runnier consistency.

After all the ingredients have been thoroughly combined, the cheese is then ready to be served.

    Mexican Velveeta Nacho Review

Full transparency, I am not a fan of grandmas Mexican Velveeta Nachos. But then my husband makes a mean batch of grilled, smoked nachos so the bar is quite high.

Recipe: Ro*tel And Velveeta Famous Queso Dip

Kraft and ConAgra gave me VELVEETA and RO*TEL products for this sponsored post.

For me, every rich and creamy bite of RO*TEL and VELVEETA Queso dip is oozing with nostalgia. Just one dunk transports me back to my childhood self, a gangly thing with a never-ending appetite. Years later, I still remember that first taste like it was yesterday, every time I make the recipe. And I do make the recipe all the time! Its the star of every tailgate, birthday and awards show party I throw! But Ill never forget my first time.

I can remember it all too well. I was at my first real sleepover, a shy thing amidst a gaggle of other awkward pre-teens. During a particularly intense round of Mall Madness, my friends mother interrupted the heated battle, toting a steaming crockpot and a giant bag of chips. The other girls made a mad dash for the dip, and I followed. The cheesy, spicy dip was unlike anything I had ever encountered. What is this stuff? I exclaimed. I knew my life would never be the same.

Later, I regaled my mother with stories from the sleepover, and I proudly announced that my new most favorite food was, like, something totally awesome called Queso, and could we please have it for dinner every night. And from then on, it was the star at all three of her daughters sleepovers.
