How To Make The Toppings: Tips And Techniques

We Finally Know How Kraft Mac & Cheese Is Really Made

The first thing you need to do is crush whatever crunchy topping youve chosen. If youre using potato chips, crackers, or cheese crisps, you can either place them in a zip top bag and roll over the bag with a rolling pin , or whir them in a food processor. If youre going the rolling pin route, be sure to push out any air in the bag before zipping it closed.

To make your own breadcrumbs from leftover bread, start by removing any particularly tough or thick crusts. Tear the bread into pieces, place it in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the steel blade, and pulse until your desired crumb size is reached.

This works best with stale bread. If your bread is particularly fresh and soft, you can dry out the torn pieces in the oven. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake at 300-degrees F for 15-25 minutes. Watch the bread closely so it doesnt toast or burn.

What If You Eat An Entire Box Of Kraft Mac & Cheese

Kraft Triple Cheese Macaroni & Cheese Easy Microwavable Big Cup Dinner ...

The reality is that most people eat significantly more than one serving of the food at a time. A simple reveals how incredibly common it is for people to eat an entire box by themselves.

So, say you down an entire 7.25-ounce box by yourself after using the Classic Prep method to prepare it. Heres what the nutrition facts for that meal roughly look like:

  • 1,050 calories
  • 13.5 grams of saturated fat
  • 2,160mg of sodium
  • 21 grams of sugar
  • 30 grams of protein

Now were looking at a meal thats high in calories and saturated fat and very high in sodium. If youre consistently eating meals like this, its going to be difficult to lose weight.

If I had to make a nutritional comparison, a box of Kraft Original Flavor Macaroni & Cheese Dinner is remarkably similar to a Chipotle burrito made with chicken, white rice, black beans, fajita veggies, cheese, sour cream and red-chili salsaat least in terms of total calorie, fat, saturated fat and sodium content.

However, the burrito contains twice as much fiber as the box of Kraft Mac & Cheese. Fiber is a nutrient thats key for keeping you full and regular in the near term while also contributing to a reduced risk of chronic disease and better overall health over the long haul, and most of us dont eat enough of it.

The burrito is also going to be significantly higher in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants thanks to its superior quantity of plant-based foods.

+ Ways To Dress Up Boxed Mac & Cheese

Dont get me wrong while reading this article. I love a good baked macaroni and cheese dish. In fact, one of my favorite dishes to bring to a get-together or party when Im trying to impress people is this amazing Food Network recipe. But there is nothing quite like boxed Macaroni and Cheese.

Lets face it: recipes for amazing baked macaroni and cheese generally take more time, more ingredients, and more thought, not to mention serious kitchen skills. On the flip side, I bet most of you out there can whip up a box of Kraft in your sleep.

Mac & cheese and I have been good friends since I boiled my first pot of water. As busy kid who had to be carted off to gymnastics practice by a neighborhood carpool before my parents got home from work, I had to learn how to fend for myself when it came to dinner. And as a 12-year-old, my meal of choice was boxed macaroni and cheese 9 out of 10 times. It was easy to make, extremely delicious, and I could often enjoy the leftovers for lunch the next day.

Even now that my tastes have greatly expanded, a week rarely goes when I dont have mac & cheese at least once. Here are just some of the reasons why the boxed stuff is so awesome:

Easy Add-In and Toppers

Before we get into the actual recipe ideas, lets just marvel at the amount of cheap ingredients that you can add to the boxed stuff to make it different each time you prepare it. These are just some of the things Ive added into my mac over the last couple of decades:

How Much Cheese Should I Use

I shredded 90g of parmesan cheese to replace the 1/4 cup of milk for an entire regular-sized box of Kraft mac and cheese.

This is roughly 50% more cheese than the equivalent weight of milk, but hey, I love cheese.

I recommend adding at least 60g of shredded cheese to replace the milk at roughly a 1:1 ratio.

These measurements are for a regular 7.25oz box of Kraft macaroni and cheese. Im sure this will also work fine for most other boxed mac and cheeses.

The Best Butter Substitutes For Kraft Mac And Cheese

Ive listed all of the substitutes I tried in the table below, along with my thoughts on how each one impacted the dish.

Overall, I was most impressed with the cream cheese, cheese, greek yogurt, and sour cream. These are universal options most people will like.

Some of them, such as pumpkin puree or peanut butter, added a unique flavor. Great if you like that flavor but not so great if you dont.

Using no substitute left the mac and cheese a bit bland for my tastes, but the only replacement I didnt enjoy was oil.

Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Is Made With A Blend Of Spices

Kraft Original Flavor Mac and Cheese, 7.25 oz Box

When Kraft removed the synthetic dyes from its boxed mac and cheese, it had to add something in its place to make sure the product still looked and tasted the same for consumers. Today, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese is made with a blend of spices that help achieve that goal. They include bright red paprika, which is infused into the noodles as well as used in the cheese sauce. Rich, yellow turmeric, which contains a host of health benefits in addition to the perfect mac and cheese hue, is also included. Finally, some annatto is added. For those who aren’t familiar, annatto is extracted from the seeds of achiote trees, and it’s basically food dye straight from nature .

According to Eater, Kraft massaged their new mac and cheese formula for over three years before they got it just right. And while there were a small number of mac and cheese lovers who petitioned Kraft to go back to their original recipe, most people embraced the changes.

Creamy Baked Macaroni & Cheese

I will certainly claim this is quite a huge recipe and makes a substantial cast iron frying pan. Next time, I will reduce the recipe in fifty percent, as the leftovers arent rather as yummy. Overall, a tasty mac n cheese.

Make The Sauce Separately

My fourth trick is to never, ever try to make the sauce while the elbow macaroni is in the pot. The macaroni gets totally beaten up during this process, and its almost impossible to get rid of every little bit of powder, leaving the mac and cheese gritty.

Instead, set the drained macaroni aside in a bowl , adding a tablespoon of the butter and giving it a gentle stir, so that the pasta doesnt stick together as it sits.

Then, over low heat, stir the remaining tablespoon of butter with the quarter cup of milk, the packet of cheese powder, and the two or three slices of American cheese.

Now, if you absolutely dont want to use another dish and just want to serve the mac and cheese in the pot, I get you. At the end of the day, one more bowl for each thing you cooked adds up. In that case, just let the pasta sit in the strainer or colander you used to drain it, and dont add the tablespoon of butter to it .

You just have to be extra careful when its time to add the pasta to the sauce, because it will tend to fall out of the strainer in one big clump, and that could make a big mess . And youll have to do a bit of extra stirring to get the pasta separated again.

Thats it! Easy tips to upgrade your boxed mac and cheese from good to delicious!

Is Kraft Mac & Cheese Healthy

For claritys sake, this article is going to focus mainly on Kraft Original Flavor Macaroni & Cheese Dinner. More specifically, the 7.25-ounce box. This is perhaps the most classic manner in which to purchase the product and when most people refer to eating an entire box of Kraft Mac & Cheese, this is usually what theyre referring to .

Instructions on the packaging for the Classic Prep of the 7.25-ounce box includes boiling all the noodles, draining them, and then mixing in the included Cheese Sauce Mix as well as 4 tablespoons of margarine and 1/4 cup of 2% milk.

Each of these boxes contains three servings. Per one serving using the Classic Prep, the nutrition facts for Kraft Original Flavor Macaroni & Cheese Dinner are roughly:

  • 350 calories
  • 4.5 grams of saturated fat
  • 720mg of sodium
  • 2 grams of dietary fiber
  • 7 grams sugar
  • 10 grams of protein

Nutritionally, one serving of Kraft Original Flavor Macaroni & Cheese Dinner is roughly equivalent to a McDonalds Cheeseburger. Theres not a ton of calories there, but perhaps the biggest red flag is the sizable amount of sodium.

While 4.5 gram of saturated fat sounds far from ideal, some recent research is changing experts perception of saturated fat and its impact on our overall health. Considering much of it here comes from the margarine and milk, which are naturally high in saturated fat, that total may not be as bad as it sounds.

What Is Kraft Macaroni And Cheeses New Name

Before you get too sad about the name being the end of an era, were here to let you know its only a slight change.

In fact, its so slight you may not even have noticed the change. Rather than being called Kraft Macraroni and Cheese, the iconic staple will now be known as Kraft Mac & Cheese.

The new name was inspired by what everybody already calls their product, in an attempt to be seen as comfort food and to stand out against their competitors on the shelves.

Customers will be able to shop the new look from August 2022.

Making The Cheese Sauce

Make the cheese sauce while the pasta is cooking. The box will indicate how much milk and butter to use. Put this in a pan with the powdered cheese and heat over medium-low to medium heat. Stir frequently. You want to heat it to the point the butter is melted and its fully combined. Next remove it from the heat and add 1 cup of shredded cheese and 1/4 cup of milk. Mix together and set aside for now.

Putting it all together

Once the pasta is done pull the strainer out of the water to drain the pasta.

Pour the pasta into your slow cooker. Pour the cheese sauce over the pasta and mix.

If you need to make another batch of two boxes just repeat using the already hot water.

Keeping the mac and cheese warm

Remember to put the slow cooker on warm. You can do that a little in advance if you want.

Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Uses Patented Powdered Cheese

When Kraft Mac & Cheese made its debut around World War II, it was an instant hit. But before this revolutionary boxed meal came an even bigger innovation from J.L. Kraft, the man behind the Kraft foods empire. In 1916, Kraft was awarded the first patent ever for creating processed cheese which is basically a method for making a cheese product that is shelf stable and won’t spoil quickly. We won’t get into the chemistry of it all, but it is safe to say that processed cheese fundamentally changed the ways we eat.

After Kraft’s processed cheese became a hit , the company wanted to expand to feed the masses . Processed cheese led to the invention of powdered cheese, and eventually the boxed mac and cheese dinner was born. This was right around the Great Depression and World War II, so the cheap, easy, and yet elevated meal became a staple in many American households .
