Can I Bake Mozzarella Sticks
Yes, you can make homemade mozzarella sticks without frying, by baking them in the oven. However, I find baked mozzarella sticks have a higher risk of error since you can’t monitor their cooking as closely. You are more likely to end up with melted white blobs than stretchy homemade cheese sticks!
Not to mention, baked mozzarella sticks aren’t all that healthy either. You are still chowing down on big sticks of breaded cheese. Might as well fry them in oil, get better flavor, and have a better chance of them cooking to perfection.
If you still wish to attempt baked mozzarella sticks I recommend freezing the cheese prior to breading and baking them in a 450-degree oven until golden brown and the cheese threatens to ooze out. Freezing the cheese buys you a little more time before you have a melted disaster.

Here are the steps:
Gather The Ingredients To Prepare Beer Battered Mozzarella Sticks
First things first: You want to start by gathering all of the ingredients necessary to create this delightful side dish. For starters, you will need some flour, baking powder, and baking soda. If you cook at home fairly often, you will likely be able to find one or more items in your pantry already. In addition, grab some salt and a dark beer. “I love using a dark beer here for a deep malty sweetness,” Carli notes. To complete your list, add an egg, mozzarella sticks, and oil for frying. Once you have everything gathered together, it’s time to begin.

Helpful Tips And Recipe Variations
- Try to use 1 hand or 1 fork for dipping the cheese sticks in the wet ingredients, and another for the dry ingredients. This way, youll avoid clumping and making a huge mess.
- Feel free to use Italian breadcrumbs instead of the plain kind and omit the Italian seasonings. Just make sure theyre vegan! A lot of brands contain dairy.
- Help your sticks taste a little smokey with a dash or two of liquid smoke included in the wet ingredients.
- If you have leftover cheese , you can melt it on pizza, in quesadillas, or slice it on a burger.
- Not a huge fan of mozzarella or cant find any? You can use another vegan cheese, such as vegan cheddar or other flavor.
- Are you nut-free? Dont worry! My mozzarella recipe can be made with silken tofu instead of cashews.

How To Make Them Extra Crispy
This recipe is for a single coating because thats what most people will have time for, but if you want to make the extra effort to apply a second coating and freeze a second time you wont be sorry. This applies to any cooking method you decide to do . After freezing the first time, just dip in the egg batter and then the breadcrumb mixture once more and freeze again for about 40 minutes.
Not Knowing That Mozzarella Is A Soft Cheese
What does it mean by acknowledging Mozzarella is a soft cheese? Well, there are two kinds of cheese, soft and hard cheese. While hard cheese such as Parmesan and Gouda are firm in texture and appearance, soft cheese like Mozzarella, on the other hand, is extremely soft, mushy, and tender.
This characteristic makes Mozzarella extremely sensitive to cutting and shredding. Under a few chops, the cheese texture can immediately collapse, and you cannot get any shreds out of it. Many people dont notice this fact and keep shredding Mozzarella like when they successfully did with hard cheese until they found out that they cannot achieve the same result.
Soft cheese like Mozzarella can easily break down if you push it too far in a cheese grater, and thats when you fail when trying to grating mozzarella. Thats the same mistake people usually find on how to reheat mozzarella sticks as well.

How Is Mozzarella Cheese Made
There are two popular methods for making Mozzarella, depending on how the cheesemaker introduces acid to the milk.
In traditional Mozzarella-making, lactic acid bacteria ferment the milk, producing acid, which drops the pH over several hours to create a subtle and complex flavor profile.
In direct-acidified Mozzarella, acid mixes with the milk, lowering the pH immediately without bacteria. Cheesemakers add rennet to strengthen the curd, which is cut and drained after it has solidified.
Next, in the step that defines Mozzarella, the curds are re-suspended in hot, salty brine or whey. There, they are repeatedly stretched and folded either by hand or by machine.
This stretching process releases some moisture, incorporates salt into the curd, and aligns the protein network so that strings form. Continued stretching elongates the protein chain so that at the right temperature and pH, Mozzarella can achieve extremely long strings that stretch without breaking.
Storing And Reheating Leftovers
You can easily make these a night or two beforehand! Just keep them in the freezer until youre ready to bake or fry.
Theyre best enjoyed hot and fresh out of the oven or fryer, but you could also keep leftovers covered in the fridge or freezer for a few days.
To reheat leftovers, place them on a lined baking sheet and bake in the oven at 350ºF until warmed through . Dont use the microwave or else they might turn out soggy.

The History Of Mozzarella Sticks
The history of our favorite little gooey, cheesy snack is quite interesting. Theyre believed to date back to a recipe from 15th-century France . While this original recipe would not resemble the mozzarella stick of today, the basic ingredients and instructions are likely linked.
Mozzarella sticks earned their status among the fried food hall of fame in America during the 1970s and 1980s when popular hang out spots started serving them to customers. Once people tasted crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside fried cheese, the dish spread like wildfire.

Can They Be Frozen
I would freeze before they are baked or fried. Freeze them on a cookie sheet in a single layer for a couple of hours, once frozen transfer them to a freezer safe bag or container. They will keep for up to 3 months. They can be fried or baked from frozen. They will probably take a bit longer to cook.
So if you are looking for a delicious appetizer for any occasion I hope you give these Double Cheese Mozzarella Balls a try and let me know what you think. Buon Appetito!
How To Make Mozzarella Sticks
Believe it or not, homemade mozzarella sticks only take about 35-40 minutes from start to finish, and thats including 20 minutes in the freezer! Not too bad!
COAT. Unwrap cheese sticks and cut them in half.
Prepare a station for breading your mozzarella sticks. In bag/bowl #1, toss the flour, paprika and salt. In bag/bowl #2, mix the panko, parsley and oregano. Beat the eggs and milk together in a bowl.
Now coat your cheese sticks, working with 5-6 at a time. First give them a good soaking in the milk. Next, throw them in the flour bag and shake, shake, shake. Put them back in the milk bowl, making sure to coat every side. Finally, toss them around in the panko bag for your final coat.
FREEZE. Place them on a cookie sheet and freeze for 20-30 min, or until theyre pretty much frozen.
FRY. Heat a few inches of your canola or vegetable oil in a large frying pan. Place sticks, in batches, in the oil and fry until golden brown on all sides . Drain on a plate lined with a paper towel.
Serve immediately with marinara sauce or some homemade ranch.

How To Make Mozzarella Sticks In An Air Fryer
Making mozzarella sticks in an air fryer really is the easiest way to go. Heres how to do it:
How To Make Vegan Mozzarella Sticks
Place the breaded cheese sticks onto your lined baking sheet and place it in the freezer for at least 1 hour. This will help the cheese harden so it doesnt melt before the breadcrumbs crisp up in the oven.
Dont skip this step, especially if you are frying, because the cheese will leak into the oil and they wont turn out well.

Homemade Baked Mozzarella Sticks Recipe
These awesome bites take just over an hour to make, but 30 minutes of that is chilling time so is inactive. They need to be served straight out of the oven, so only cook them when you are ready to serve, otherwise that gooey cheese wont be so gooey! You can keep the uncooked mozzarella sticks in the freezer for up to 24 hours, so you can do all the prep before your guests arrive.
Recipe Tips For The Best Cheese Sticks
- Since the Doritos crumbs will never be as fine as bread crumbs, we need to double coat these cheese sticks. This helps ensure that the cheese sticks are fully covered with crumbs, and that there is no risk of the cheese leaking out during frying.
- It’s also important that you freeze these cheese sticks for a bit before frying them. Frozen cheese sticks are easier to fry and again the cheese is less likely to leak out when frozen.
- These Doritos crusted mozzarella sticks only take a few minutes to fry, or else the crust will burn. So be very careful and just quickly take them out the moment they are golden brown. Burnt Doritos don’t taste good, I can tell you from experience.
- Doritos sticks can be made ahead and frozen. So you can take them out whenever you want and just fry them. Just fry them in the frozen state, and don’t let them thaw.
- I have only tried these with Doritos, but you can try any kind of flavor or type of chips. If you experiment with a different kind of chips, let me know how it goes in the comments!
- These cheese sticks are best served immediately when the Doritos crust is crispy and the cheese is ooey gooey meltingly delicious!

How To Make Doritos Mozzarella Sticks
Step 1: Prepare the cheese sticks. Start by slicing the cheese string into halves. Set aside.
Step 2: Crush the Doritos. We want the Doritos to be crushed finely. Place them into a food processor or Nutribullet, and pulse a few times. We are looking for a sandy texture as can be seen in the picture.
Step 3: Set up a breading station by placing the flour, crushed up Doritos, and whisked eggs in separate bowls.
Step 4: Coat the string cheese. Take each string cheese, dip it in the flour, then the whisked eggs, and finally into the Doritos breadcrumbs. Coat until completely covered, and repeat the process one more time to make a double coating.
Step 5: Place the prepared cheese sticks in the freezer for at least 1 hour.
Step 6: Heat the oil to medium-high, and place the cheesesticks. Fry for 2-3 minutes until a light golden brown. Do not fry on high heat or the coating will easily burn.
Step 7: Transfer to a plate, and serve with your favorite sauce. I used Sriracha, but marinara would be great here too.
Use Too Much Mozzarella At A Time
We often want to shred as much Mozzarella as we can in a time so that we can witness the pretty picture of cheese shreds coming out.
However, too much Mozzarella going in the shredder at one time makes the shredding clogging easily.
Once logging is not solved properly, the cheese will come out badly in shapes and sizes, and you will have to take time to clean everything before starting shredding again thoroughly.
