Chuck E Cheese Parent Files For Bankruptcy As Covid

– The parent company of Chuck E. Cheese, the once popular children-themed restaurant chain, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Thursday, saddled by a huge pile of debt and dismal sales because of lockdowns across the country.

CEC Entertainment , which also owns Peter Piper Pizza, said it plans to use the bankruptcy proceedings to talk to stakeholders and landlords and to restructure its balance sheet, as the outbreak ravages the entertainment and leisure industries globally.

Already loss making, the outbreak shut the door on a rebound as sales plunged after restaurants were forced to close as lockdowns were put in place. Chuck E. Cheese was hit especially hard owing to its childrens party and games venues.

Irving, Texas-based CEC, which was taken private by Apollo Global Management in a leveraged buyout in 2014, joins a growing list of high-profile corporate collapses due to the ongoing health crisis.

CEC, which terminated a merger with blank check company Leo Holdings LHC_u.N last year for an undisclosed reason, reported nearly $29 million in losses last year, compared to losses of $20.4 million in 2018.

Chuck E. Cheeses bid to boost sales through delivery apps under the name Pasquallys Pizza & Wings earlier this year only created more problems, as many customers thought they were ordering from a local business.

Is Chuck E Cheese Closing

Right now, nothings set in stone. Chuck E. Cheese hasnt filed for bankruptcy.

The chain even came up with some creative ways to stave off bankruptcyit operated under the name Pasquallys Wings and Pizza on apps like Grubhub and DoorDash in order to keep some cash flowing in. Unfortunately, it might not have been enough, and we might lose this staple of American childhood.

Is Chuck E Cheese Going Out Of Business

Chuck E. Cheese On Brink Of Bankruptcy, May Be Forced To Close All ...

As of now, CEC hasnt filed for bankruptcy. However, its future isnt looking rosy. The chain was hit extremely hard by COVID-19, as it was forced to temporarily close all its locations. Even though Chuck pivoted to takeout , delivering pizza alone couldnt help Chuck E. Cheese stay afloat. QSR reports that revenue fell by 94 percentduring the first week of quarantine across the country. This is due to the fact that over half of business comes from the restaurants arcade and entertainment venue.

Although Chuck E. Cheese recently released new safety guidelines for their locations, it’ll be hard for the company to be making the same kind of money they were pre-COVID. With fewer kids allowed in the arcade section of the establishment, parties, and the decreased utilization of the entertainment space, will Chuck E. Cheese ever recover? The guidelines also sadly stated, “And for now, during phase 1 of reopening, Chuck E. himself will be resting until he feels ready to get back out on the dance floor.”

Chuck E Cheese Is Running Out Of Money And Losing Peoples Attention

Chuck E Cheese’s is CLOSING FOREVER? (Sad Decline of Chuck E. Cheese’s Arcade)

For as long as the threat of coronavirus looms over social gatherings, Chuck E. Cheese is in deep trouble.

Restaurants and arcades have been an awesome combination since the ’80s, and no establishment has been as famous for meshing the two together than Chuck E. Cheese’s . If you were a child in North America from 1977 to 2019, there’s a good chance you have been to a Chuck E. Cheese in your life. It’s the sort of famous and ubiquitous chain known for suburban birthday parties, but isn’t designed to be a normal pizzeria nor a welcoming arcade/restaurant.

But unlike Dave & Buster’s, there is no big investment coming to save Mr. Cheese or his bandmates. Rumors and reports have been swirling this week about the brand going bankrupt . The three events that led to Chuck striking out: the Coronavirus pandemic closing down all non-essential businesses, 17,000 employees being laid off as a result, and then the mistaken identity fiasco involving delivery apps and a name change. A billion dollars of debt and a bad PR disaster will lead to bankruptcy talk, and the pandemic certainly doesn’t help.

If you look at the corporate jobs with our LinkedIn data, they’re going up! But that doesn’t account for all the thousands of people who were let go, and it doesn’t add in the context that top executives are being given extra bonuses as an incentive to stay on a sinking ship. But it works, since corporate jobs went up by 10% this year alone.

Theyve Gone Bankrupt Before

Most people arent aware of this, but this recent chapter 11 filing is the second time that Chuck E Cheese has gone Bankrupt. The first time was back in 1983 and the reason back then was two-fold. The first was the competition. Former Chuck E. Cheese franchisee Robert Brocks competing chain, Showbiz Pizza Place restaurants, came at Bushnell hard and in an effort to outdo each other both chains expanded, opening up restaurant after restaurant. In the end, this arcade-restaurant buildup came to a head at the end of 1984. Its also important to go back one year to the big video game crash of 1983 when arcade popularity dropped dramatically. The competition between Showbiz and Chuck E. Cheese meant that both chains were expanding faster then they should have been and werent doing proper due diligence before throwing up new restaurants. This led to poor decisions on restaurant locations and a mounting debt load for both companies. Add to that the decline in the popularity of video games and things werent looking good for either chain. However, Showbiz was able to raise some money and refinance their loans and in so doing were able to make it through this hard time. But not Chuck E. Cheese. Their money manoeuvres didnt work and in 1984 they declared bankruptcy. And get this: Showbiz ended up buying Chuck E. Cheese assets for $35 million.

Is This The End Of Chuck E Cheese

While bankruptcy sounds like its the end of the road for Chuck, that may not actually be the case. Chuck E. Cheese has come back from bankruptcy once before, back in the mid 1980s, and they could come back from the almost-dead again this time as well. The company plans on using the bankruptcy to off-load a bunch of its debt and they are even saying they will continue to open new locations during these bankruptcy proceedings. And, believe it or not, the Chuck E. Cheese brand still has some solid name-recognition and popular appeal . With that in mind, the Wall Street Journal has reported that there are a number of potential buyers circling with an interest in buying. The pandemic has changed a lot though and if the mouse does come back, we are probably going to see an updated business model for the new Chuck E. Cheese what that looks like, we will all just have to wait and see.

What Does Atari Have To Do With Chuck E Cheese

Chuck E. Cheese was actually founded in 1977 by Nolan Bushnell the man who co-founded the Atari video game company. Bushnell saw that the arcade machines he was selling to businesses for $1500 were raking in over $30,000 worth of quarters over their lifetime. This was the lightbulb moment for Bushnell who decided to get in on the action himself and open the Pizza Time Theatre in 1977. The restaurant had arcade games and pizza, and Bushnell liked the idea of Pizza because people love pizza and the wait time for it to be ready gave customers time to play the games . He also wanted to bring in animatronic mascots and when the intended wolf he ordered arrived as a rat, he named him Chuck E. Cheese and the restaurant became Chuck E. Cheeses Pizza Time Theatre which we can all agree is much better than his original idea Rick Rat Pizza . Although Bushnell had the idea and made it all happen, it was his company, Atari, that technically owned the restaurant. Being a division of Atari, the restaurant didnt actually belong to him. The good news was that the people who went on to buy Atari had no interest in being in the restaurant business so, for $500,000, they sold it all back to Bushnell and he was off and running.

How Chuck E Cheeses Got Shut Down

Our cheese is all-natural, which gives the pizza its gooey and melty goodness. When your last name is Cheese, that cheese better be good! No binders, no preservatives, just real dairy. From there, our pizza goes into the oven, where it bakes in 500 degree heat, as hot air bakes a perfectly golden pie.

A New Chuck E Cheese Childrens Ride But No One To Ride It

This spring, Dave Watson flew from his British factory to Dallas to present the restaurant chain Chuck E. Cheese with his new coin-operated childrens ride.

The machine, which Watson said cost his company about $64,000 to develop, featured a miniature train chugging around a grinning likeness of Chuck E. Cheeses mouse mascot.

Then the pandemic shutdowns hit, forcing many businesses to close or rethink everything from how to serve customers to how to get supplies. Bankruptcies were not far behind. A wave of major U.S. corporate brands have sought Chapter 11 protections.

The parent company of Chuck E. Cheese did it in late June.

This machine has been there since March and still has not had a child ride on it, said Watson, general manager of Jolly Roger Ltd. Sums the whole problem up I guess.

Fallout from the bankruptcies of dozens of American companies is rippling across the globe, as suppliers find themselves with orders abruptly canceled and customers saying they cant pay their debts.

One major problem for suppliers: they are at a lower priority level for debt repayment under Chapter 11 bankruptcy rules compared with secured creditors such as banks. That means for many factories, their new orders have not only stopped, but they face grim chances of recouping payment for products already shipped.

Pier 1 Imports did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Chuck E Cheese Pizza May Not Be The Worst Youve Ever Eaten

The intrepid staffers of MEL Magazine set out to test the hypothesis that Chuck E. Cheese pizza is the absolute worst of the worst, ordering pizza for delivery so they could sample it free of the distractions provided by what well politely term CECs carnival atmosphere. Of the seven staffers involved in taste-testing, five found it to be more or less mediocre, with faint endorsements like: This pizza stands solidly on the bottom rung of franchise brands that dont have Skee-Ball on the premises,Surprisingly inoffensive, and Chuck E. Cheese pizza isnt even close to the worst pizza Ive ever had.

One taster invoked the old trope comparing bad pizza to bad sex in that even when its bad, its good, but calling Chuck E.s version a serviceable facsimile, but worth running away from the moment it gets up and goes to the bathroom. Two reviewers waxed nostalgic, one calling the pizza the taste of his lost youth, and the other enthusing over the glorious goodie bag he received as a freebie despite the pizza tasting of cardboard and chemical cheese. A senior editor, however, said that as a Brit he knew bad pizza, but found Chuck E.s to hit new lows and summed up his review by saying, F*** the world for allowing this to exist
