How Long To Cook A Ham In A Microwave

Making Hot Pockets At Home | But Better

Cooking ham in a microwave is ideal for the smoked variety.

The cooking time depends on the weight of the ham.

You can cook whole hams in a microwave, but youll get better results with ham slices or steak.

If you cook it whole, the outer part can turn dry and hard before the inside is ready.

For uncooked ham, cover it with parchment paper to prevent overcooking, then put it inside a cooking bag thats cut on one upper side.

Close the bag and leave a little space to allow air to escape.

Cook on high for between 12 to 15 minutes or until the internal temperature hits 160 degrees F.

Remove the ham and leave it to sit for 15 minutes before you slice and serve.

This resting time allows the internal temperature to rise to the FDA-recommended 165 degrees F for safety reasons.

When cooking half fully cooked ham in a microwave, cover it with aluminum foil or parchment paper and cover using a lid or plastic wrap.

Cook for 10 to 12 minutes and ensure that the internal temperature reads 135 degrees before removing it.

Allow the ham to sit for 15 minutes before serving.

To cook half boneless, fully cooked ham, cover loosely with aluminum foil and place it on a microwavable plate containing ¼ cup of water.

Cook for 10 minutes on medium and check if the internal temperature reads 135 to 140 degrees F before removing it.

Ensure that it sits for 12 to 15 minutes before slicing or serving.

Ham And Cheese Hot Pockets

This homemade Ham and Cheese Hot Pocket is everything you could ask for in a WW recipe its low in points, filling and delicious!

I used the two ingredient dough to keep these hot pockets low in points.

Theyre easy to make and you only need a few ingredients.

You can make them in the air fryer or oven. I prefer the air fryer because it takes less time but they turn out delicious baked or in the air fryer.

This is what you need to make the Ham and Cheese Hot Pockets:

  • Plain, fat free Greek yogurt
  • Self-rising flour
  • Reduced fat cheddar cheese
  • One egg

I used Boars Head glazed honey ham. It was really good! You only need 5 ounces of it cut into small pieces.

If youve never used the two ingredient dough, its pretty easy to work with. It can be a little sticky so be sure to flour your work surface. You can also spray your hands with cooking spray so it doesnt stick to them.

I divided the dough into 4 pieces. Each piece makes a large hot pocket. This is definitely a filling recipe.

Each hot pocket is 5 points for blue and purple, 6 points for green.

My daughter loves the Hot Pockets in the freezer section. She actually liked my hot pockets more!

Really I think anything you make homemade instead of in the freezer section tastes better.

Did I mention they are big? This picture gives you a better idea of the size:

How Are Ham And Cheese Pockets Made

Here is a brief description of how it works. Scroll down for my whole recipe for the exact directions.

  • Dough is divided. The dough should be cut into quarters after being divided in half. There will be enough dough for 8 handmade pockets.
  • The dough is formed. Make a rectangle out of each piece of dough . Place the shaped dough on the baking pans that have been prepared.
  • Add cheese and ham. In order to completely contain the ham and cheese, fold the dough over to the opposite side.
  • the edges together. Using a fork to crimp the edges, seal the pockets as tightly as you can.
  • Apply egg wash to the tops and sides. The egg wash helps the tops brown and gives them all a lovely gloss.
  • Make a few slits in the tops.
  • Enjoy! The bread is soft inside and crispy outside, which makes them amazing immediately out of the oven. In handheld form, its a marvel. The center is incredibly hot, so use caution when taking that first mouthful!

This recipe makes 10 pockets.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf frozen bread dough, thawed
  • 2 1/2 cups finely chopped, fully cooked ham
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon water

Step 1: Prep the Dough

The first step is simple. Take a look at the directions on your frozen bread dough and let it rise accordingly. That may take some time, so plan in advance.

Test Kitchen Tip: If you dont have time to wait for frozen bread dough to thaw and rise, try using refrigerated pizza crust instead. Just save some for these amazing make-at-home pizzas.

Step 2: Divide the Dough

Once the bread has risen, punch it down and divide it into 10 equally sized pieces. Lightly flour the surface youre working on and roll each of the 10 pieces into a circle around 5 inches in size. These will become your pockets of flaky crust.

Step 3: Add the Filling

Place a circle of dough on a greased baking sheet. Add about 1/4 cup of ham and 2 tablespoons of cheese to within 1/2 inch of the edge of the circle, then press the filling to flatten.

Test Kitchen Tip: Swiss cheese is used in this recipe because its a classic pairing with ham, but any shredded cheese of your choosing would work great. Shred it yourself for supreme melt-ability.

Step 4: Seal and Top

Combine the egg yolk and water to create an egg wash. Use the egg wash to brush the outer edges of the dough . Fold the dough over the filling and use a fork to seal and crimp the edges. Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling.

Theres nothing I love more that hanging with my hubby on Sundays, watching the football games and eating lots of yummy game-day eats! Ok, wellthe second half of that statement is true.

Truthfully, Im not a huge football fan, but the best part of the season for me is getting creative in the kitchen and slimming down typical Football Sunday foods and tricking my husband into thinking hes eating the real thing!

My latest creation are these Ham & Cheese Hot Pockets that I made using a 2-ingredeint dough AND cooked them in the air fryer with no oil or added fat from deep frying. Not only do these take about 20 minutes from start to finish, they are absolutely delicious.

The star of this recipe is this Honey Ham I found in the refrigerator section of my grocery store. Its from a brand called Prime Fresh and I love it because its got this incredible resealable package that keeps your deli meats fresh for SO much longer . Not only does it last longer, the taste is some of the best Ive had. So fresh! A little more research into the brand and I found that they are the fastest growing lunch brand meat in the United States. Crazy!

Why This Recipe Works

This hot pockets recipe is so easy to make, there’s no reason to buy the boxed version.

You can make these warm pockets of portable joy with real ingredients, and for a fraction of the cost.

I tweaked my Whole Wheat Pizza Crust recipe for the dough, and added spices and other ingredients for a healthier option. However, you can stick to the tender, flaky white flour crust if you prefer.

The small amount of yeast used in the hot pocket dough is perfect: it’s just enough to get the job done, resulting in a chewy thin crust that isn’t overly puffy.

Either hot pocket dough recipe will yield a delicious crust, but I tend to prefer the wheat crust version.

They’re freezer-friendly! Just like the frozen boxed brand, these can be made ahead and stored in the freezer for months. To heat, microwave on high for 1 ½ to 2 minutes, or bake at 350°F for 15-18 minutes.
