Which Cheddar Cheese Is Best

Tillamook | âIâll Have What Theyâre Havingâ?: Real Reactions

Cheese! A food so good that you can put it on almost any other food and it makes that food better! Dont believe me? My multiple lactose intolerant friends who wont stop eating cheese say otherwise. When we were asked to hold a Cheddar Cheese taste test, we knew it was a must!

The person who asked us to test Cheddar Cheese felt overwhelmed at the amount of brands of cheese, and the wide range of prices. And its true, there is such a wide range. Look at the price difference between the cheapest contender and the most expensive contender below.

Setting up the Cheddar Cheese Taste Test

The cheeses were presented on identical plates, labeled A-F.

The panelists were asked to select them all at once and were allowed to test in whatever order they wanted.

Panelists were able to eat the cheese alone, or with whatever food they wanted to eat with it. However they had to stick with that food for each brand. To see how we keep all tests unbiased, as well as a list of every test ever, click here.

Why Does My Cheese Sauce Curdle

Its that overcooking that can cause the sauce to curdle. When your white sauce is ready, remove it from the heat. If its really hot, let it cool a few minutes. The sauce only needs to be hot enough to melt the grated cheese, which you should stir in gradually until just melted and incorporated into the sauce.

A Tillamook Cheese Won First Place At The 1904 World’s Fair

If Tillamook County dairy farmers were committed enough to build Oregon’s first ship, and actually sail it, imagine how great their cheese could be?

The world didn’t wait long for that answer, as Tillamook County’s first big culinary victory came at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. Ten years into McIntosh’s influence, it showed early proof positive that his formula scaled to success. A harbinger event that paved the way to McIntosh’s work and Tillamook’s merging as one.

This event also paved the way to Tillamook becoming a full cooperative. As their products continued to improve and expand, working together with other dairy farmers became both lucrative and essential. McIntosh’s cheese-making methods would continue to dominate the competition, and Tillamook County would continue to expand it’s dairy-making success. The 1904 World’s Fair was a huge victory but Tillamook County wasn’t done yet.

Kraft Cheese Has Noticeable Flavor And Variety

Tillamook Medium Cheddar Cheese Block, 2 lb (Aged 60 Days)

Thanks to iconic products like Kraft Singles and Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in the “blue box,” Kraft is one of the largest dairy companies in the world . As is the case with Velveeta cheese, the popular American cheese slices can’t really be classified as cheese, but Kraft makes a wider selection of cheeses available in slices, chunks, deli blocks, shredded cheeses, and snacks.

When it comes to the core favorites in the Kraft cheese lineup, including the cheddar cheeses, Monterey Jack, and mozzarella, we found that these cheeses also had a wider range of textures and flavors than the Borden and Sargento counterparts. The sharp cheddar is a little denser and crumblier, with a stronger cheddar flavor, and it’s very different from the creamier Monterey Jack that’s got a milder flavor and softer texture. In a blind tasting, you may even be able to fool some of your friends into thinking that the Kraft two-year aged natural cheddar cheese is fancier than the label may have you think.

This friendly cow with the sweeping joyful smile captured mascot status and held that mantle for over 50 years. Bringing joy to children as a toy, and joy to adults as a collector’s item.

Now discontinued as their solo brand ambassador, the original “Tillie of Tillamook” rubber squeak toy remains a lucrative antique at online auctions and . Original Tillies fetch far over their original prices, with mint condition Tillies still housed in their rustic farmland packaging. Periodically, newer editions of Tillie are on sale at the Tillamook factory, making the Tillamook County Creamery headquarters not just an enticing tourist attraction, but one to keep tabs on for Tillie.

Tillamook Once Toured The Country In Cheese

Peace. Love. Cheese? In the summer of 2010, all three were on offer as the “Love Loaf Tour” hit over 100 U.S. cities in a fleet of cheddar-orange Volkswagen mini buses. Crisscrossing the country in a motorized facsimile of Tillamook’s “Baby Loaf” variety of cheddar.

Spreading the message of love through their love of dairy, Tillamook commemorated their 100th anniversary by slinging free samples and coupons to supermarkets and outdoor displays wherever their cheese-loafs-on-wheels roamed. The vivid stunt was a huge success, and led to Tillamook rolling out more evocative and innovative ad campaigns.

As a follow-up, Tillamook launched their “Dairy Done Right” campaign in 2015, where they published a series of scintillating photos of melted cheeses on hot food. Doubling-down on their support of dairy farmers in the messaging of Dairy Done Right. Promoting real food from local farmers, backed by the cheese that tops them.

Since the first cartons of organic milk hit the shelves in grocery stores, the Organic Valley company has expanded to include a full line of dairy products, eggs, cheeses, and an ever-growing collection of meats.

We tasted the Raw Sharp Cheddar Cheese and were immediately impressed with how crisp and authentic it tasted. That shouldnt have come as a surprise, given that it won the Bronze medal at the Los Angeles International Dairy Competition in both 2012 and 2017. While the cheeses Organic Valley produces are generally the same types of cheese produced by their competitors, we could tell the quality of the cheeses had gone up a notch. With a handful of cheese awards under their belt, its clear that Organic Valley is interested in refining the popular cheese market, if not adding a little creativity to it.

Is Tillamook Cheese Gluten Free Cheese

Tillamook cheese states on their website that their cheese is not processed with any major allergens, besides milk, of course. This would mean that their cheese is gluten free. Their dairy is also sourced from farms that commit to not pumping their cows with artificial hormones.

That being said, Tillamook cheese does advise that there is potential for cross contamination due to the fact that they also process ice cream in their facility. The equipment that processes the cheese does not come in contact with those allergens though. Tillamook also says they take as many precautions as possible to avoid cross contamination by testing and cleaning their equipment thoroughly.

Great Value Medium Cheddar

Walmart’s generic brand cheddar is nearly identical in terms of the nutrition facts and ingredient list to the cheddar sold under Whole Foods’ generic brand 365. Kroger Extra Sharp Cheddar Review

Tillamook offers The Mother Loaf: 40 pound cheese block

The packaging on the Kroger cheddar doesnt look as nice as the Tillamook. Thats typical for store brand items. Instead of paying for fancy marketing, youre just paying for the cheese.

But does the cheese itself compare? I opened both packages and inspected the contents. The Kroger cheese is a slightly deeper color, and the surface isnt quite as smooth. Both sliced nicely.

As far as the texture goes, the Kroger cheese is a tiny bit softer than the Tillamook. I prefer the firmness of the Tillamook, although I concede that it would not be very significant when inside a burger or shredded.

Tillamook: From Farm To Factory

Tillamook IS cheese. It produces about two dozen cheese varieties, from sharp Cheddar to aged Swiss to hot habanero jack. Tillamook also makes ice cream, butter, sour cream and yogurt, which I hope one day Texans can also enjoy! Tillamook County Creamery Association, which makes Tillamook Cheese, is described as North Americas most successful farmer-owned dairy cooperative for over 100 years. To meet the demand, Tillamook built a satellite cheese plant in the eastern Oregon town of Boardman in 2001, then doubled its size to 150,000 square feet in 2006, boosting the creamerys cheese output by 50% when both plants run at full capacity.

During the tour, consistency, quality and savvy marketing stood out to me as the hallmarks of Tillamooks brand! I highly recommend that you take a trip to this cheese-making wonderland. Enjoy the gorgeous backdrop of Tillamook, Oregon while you are visiting. It will surely melt you heart, like a good piece of extra-sharp Cheddar on a grilled cheese sandwich.
