Cheese is great keto-friendly food, as long as you choose the right kind.
Cheese can be loaded with sugar, added ingredients, and chemicals. Or it can be a healthy, high-fat option that has tremendous health benefits. So it can either be great for staying in ketosis and helping you with weight loss, or it can be a detriment. It’s all up to the kind you choose to buy and eat.
When you head to the grocery store, there are many different options lining the shelves. With so many different brands, types, flavors, and preparation methods, how do you know what is best to choose when doing keto? What should you look for on the label to make sure you are choosing the healthiest, most keto-friendly options?
You might think that “natural” on the label is good enough. But here is the thing: when you see that word on a label, it essentially means nothing. There’s more to it than that when it comes to deciding on a healthy cheese.
Here is what you really want to look for when choosing cheese on keto:
How Many Carbs Does Cream Cheese Have
Though cream cheese is not the lowest carb cheese out there it is still low in carbs compared to many other foods. In fact, one ounce of cream cheese just over 1 carb. That said, one once of cream cheese is a good amount for most of the things you would use it for. On top of that, it also contains a whopping 10 grams of keto-friendly fats.
It is important to remember that keto is not simply a low-carb diet but also a diet that is high in dietary fats. In fact, I would recommend that at least 70 percent of your total calories come in the form of dietary fats. That said, almost 90 percent of the calories from cream cheese come from fats.
Most people on keto are trying to keep their net carbs to 25 or under. With that in mind, you would have to eat thousands of calories worth of cream cheese to hit those numbers. So as you can see, cream cheese is definitely on my list of keto-approved foods.
Cream cheese is very low in carbs, loaded with fats, and has a moderate amount of protein. This perfectly fits the bill of the keto diet. However, it is usually used as a topping or spread certain foods. Since most of those are off-limits, lets look at some ways we can enjoy it with other keto-approved food choices.
So Which Dairy Foods Dont Work On A Keto Diet
A quick look at the nutrition facts can help you determine which dairy products might be a do and a don’t. For instance, higher-carb dairy products like ice cream and flavored milk will have a higher sugar content compared to something like a cheese or plain milk, explains Hillary Pride, RDN, LD, NASM-CPT, registered dietitian and certified personal trainer in Portland, Maine.
“It really comes down to looking out for added sugar,” Pride says. “Some sweetened yogurts can pack close to 40 grams of carbs per serving, so they may have to be enjoyed in smaller portions or swapped for a lower-carb alternative.”
