Shop Gourmet Stores For Gourmet Cheese

Buy Velveeta or Cheaper Walmart Brand Cheese Block Substitute? Taste Test Comparison and Review

It might sound contradictory to shop at a tiny mom and pop shop over a bigger store, but in most cases, youll spend less on gourmet cheese at a cheese shop than you will on gourmet cheese at a traditional supermarket. Remember that markets have to order a lot and sell a lot in order to make a profit. The cheese stores will sell as little as 1/8 lb, or just 2 ounces and then youre only paying for what you really need.

How Long Will A Block Of Parmesan Last

Hard Cheeses Some of our favorite cheeses in this category include Parmesan, Asiago, Romano and cheddar. When stored properly in the fridge, an unopened package can last between two and four months. An opened package of Parmesan or block of cheddar, however, is good for about six weeks in the fridge.

Is It Safe To Eat Cheese Bought Online

Yes! The shipping cost will likely be higher for your cheese order than it might be for other food items, and thats because cheese does better with less transit time. It requires lots of pampering, too, like ice packs and insulation.

When your cheese arrives, there may be a strong aroma. Thats normal. Cheese is a living thing and does best when its able to breathe, which is why it should be stored in breathable packaging once its made its way to you. Just let it air out on your counter for 30 minutes to an hour before putting it in your fridge.

There may also be some moisture buildup or even mold. Thats normal, too. If theres moisture buildup on your piece of cheese, simply rewrap the cheese in butcher paper before putting it in the fridge. Mold on fresh cheese, like burrata, chevre, ricotta, or mozzarella is a no-no, but otherwise, if the mold is green, blue, white, or grey, it can be cut off. If the mold is black or red, hold off and send a photo to the cheese shop for further examination.

What Do You Look For When Buying Cheese Online

In general, cheesemongers will advise you to order less cheese more often, rather than stocking up, but sometimes we go overboard. Should you be buying in bulk, make sure to eat softer cheeses, like Brie and burrata, first. The harder cheeses, like parmesan and cheddar, can last months in your fridge as opposed to a few weeks for the softer stuff.

Your cheese will likely come packaged in butcher paperand thats where it should remain. Plastic wrap will suffocate cheese and impart unpleasant flavors.

Many shops offer assortment boxes that make a lovely cheese plate. Should you be curating your own cheese board selection, stick to a range of milk types and textures. An old cheesemonger saying is something old , something new , something stinky, something blue.

Always Buy Parmesan In Bricks Or Wedges

The Best Cheese To Buy At The Grocery Store…And What To Avoid!

It seems silly to add since Ive already convinced you that buying cheese in bricks is the way to go, but this holds especially true with Parmesan. This cheese has a very strong and distinct taste, so it doesnt take much at all to enhance dinner. When you manually shred it yourself, you can better control how much youre using and the flavor. Plus its one of the more expensive cheeses, so pulling some out of a container or even pouring some out usually means adding more than you need and going through what you have much more quickly.

Details For Comparing Cheese

Over the past two months, Ive been collecting prices from the grocery store most times Ive been shopping. I have tried to get prices for various sizes, brands, and types of cheeses.

Here are some details that you will want to know to get the whole picture:

Stores I went to: WinCo, Walmart, Costco, and SmithsBrands I compared: Kraft, Cheswick, WinCo, Tillamook, Cache Valley, Great Value, Sargento, Kroger, Kirkland, and PreciousTypes of cheeses: Colby Jack, Monterey Jack, Cheddar, Mozzarella, Colby and Monterey Jack, Swiss, and Mexican BlendSizes : 6 oz. , 8 oz. , 16 oz. , 32 oz. , and 5 lbs.

Keep in mind, I did not compare every single cheese at these stores. I selected a few, randomly, and went from there. I didnt want to spend all day at the store, especially with my daughters.

Now that you know all the details, I think you can understand my comparison a bit better. Lets start comparing to see whether a block of cheese or a bag of pre-shredded cheese is cheaper!

Ways To Save On Cheese Besides Buying It In A Brick

Last Updated November 4, 2016

WARNING: Todays post has some math.

Saving money on cheese was no where on my radar until about six months ago. At the time, I realized we were buying more protein-rich foods other than meat in an effort to still consume enough protein, minus the expense.

There was a sneaking suspicion dinging around in my brain that buying whole bricks of cheese would be more affordable than buying shredded, sliced, string or even those little snack-y cheeses, but I never really sat down to do the math to see how much money I could be saving. Nor did I weigh the pros and cons to doing some of the prep work myself.

So I ran some numbers, jotted down some pros and cons over the weekend and came to one, massively simple conclusion:

9 times out of 10, its cheaper to buy bricks of cheese.

Argue with me all you want that buying shredded can save you time, or that buying string cheese helps you better with portion control and thus saves more in the long run. Go ahead Im open to hearing your side of the story.

But Im warning you, its going to be tough to convince me otherwise.

I spent WAY more time than I had available typing up all my calculations and comparing notes just to try to convince you that buying bricks is the way to go.

All for naught though, because I should have just said is this:

Crunch the numbers the next time you shop.

My simple work around for making string cheese: Cut off chunks from the brick.

Best For European Cheeses: Formaggio Kitchen

  • A range of domestic and international cheeses

  • You wont find some of these cheeses anywhere else in the U.S.

  • The selection may be a bit esoteric for the average cheese lover

Boston-based Formaggio Kitchen carries the finest artisan foods from around the world. Though it stocks some American favorites, the cheese selection is decidedly old world and, frankly, unrivaled when it comes to European cheeses. Take nutty, mild Comté, the most popular cheese in France. Most shops stock one version, usually aged between eight and 12 months. They might bring in a two-year version around the holidays. Formaggio Kitchen, on the other hand, stocks four to six Comtés on any given day, each with a different age and flavor profile.

For the cheese explorer, the taste of collections are also exceptional, featuring Italy, France, the British Isles, and more. Oh, and if you love charcuterie, many of the products are house-made.

Best For Cheese And Charcuterie: Murrays Cheese

Is Parmigiano The Same As Parmesan

Where Can You Buy Government Cheese

Unfortunately, there isnt a goverment cheese section at your local grocery store or any online grocer. The truth is unless you actually qualify for goverment assistance you cant legally acquire goverment cheese. But the good news is that several dairy producers make a product that is as close as you can get to the real thing.

Land O Lakes sells the product that is extremely similar to government cheese. Just look for the Extra Melt cheese in the brown and whtie box. You can also buy it in bulk online at retailers

If your wanting a smaller amount or you just cant wait another minute for some government gold, the Fields brand is a close second. The 2.5 pound blocks are available at IGA and other grocery stores throughout the nation.
