Is Blue Cheese Paleo Friendly

How To Store Cheese At Home

One of the things you vow to give up when you live a paleo lifestyle is cheese. Cheese of all kinds plus every other dairy product, of course, is off-limits when it comes to the paleo diet. Still, it doesnt hurt to ask, is blue cheese paleo friendly?

Cheese is a grey area as it is a dairy product. Eating dairy can and will cause irritation and inflammation, so blue cheese shouldnt even be up for debate.

One of the benefits of the paleo diet is to help reduce inflammation.

However, if you really can not resist the urge, then there are some guidelines for eating blue cheese the right way while youre on your paleo diet after that, Ill recommend a few blue cheese alternatives for those who cant stomach lactose at all, not even on their cheat day.

  • How To Make Turkey Burgers Buffalo

I kept this buffalo turkey burger super simple.

In a large bowl, add the ground turkey, crumbled blue cheese, Franks hot sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

Then, mix all the ingredients together.

After everything is combined, form the ground turkey into 4 patties.

Cooking Note: You can easily double or triple this recipe to make a few extra patties to freeze or if you have a few people coming over.

    Cook The Turkey Burgers

When its time to cook the burgers, make sure your grill is at medium-high heat.

These turkey burgers need to have an internal temp of 165 degrees which means they are completely cooked. This is where a meat thermometer comes in handy!

Turkey burgers should never be cooked less than well done. I usually cook the burgers for 5 minutes on each side but that could be a little different depending on the thickness of your burger and the heat of your grill.

When the burgers have about 1 minute left to cook, I add a thin slice of provolone cheese. I love provolone cheese on buffalo burgers.

    Add All Of The Toppings

After your turkey burgers are fully cooked and the cheese is melted, its time to add all the burger extras.

Again, you can keep this low carb by ditching the roll and using a lettuce wrap or eating it as is. You can also lower the carbs and just enjoy it open-faced.

    Trader Joes Unexpected Cheddar

If Beyonce were a supermarket cheese, shed definitely be this one. With both mass appeal and hipster cred, Unexpected Cheddar was the runaway winner of our survey. Megan called it nicely crumbly with an intense flavor, while producer Jackie Olensky noted that it tastes like its from an expensive cheese shop. Managing editor Amy Eley adds, The title definitely fits the cheese perfectly as it tastes like a sheeps milk cheese and is definitely not what I anticipated. Its SO good.

    Buy Fresh Blue Cheese Online

Whether you love or hate blue cheese, it doesn’t matter. A friend or loved one will ask you to buy fresh blue cheese one day. You scratch your head and ask, “Where on earth would I find the stores that carry the types of blue cheese my honey wants?”

Believe it or not, it can be challenging to buy fresh cheese. Here are some reasons why:

    1. Some people love it. Some people hate it. Grocery stores do not want the smell of, say, the English cheese that your wife wants, to drive away half of their customers.

    2. See those streaks of blue that make cheese blue? Yes, those are molds. They’re deliberately put there. The thing is, grocery stores can be uncomfortable with molds on their frozen shelves.

    3. Alright, your favorite store may be an exception. But cheese is a niche product and they’re selling other stuff too! Chances are strong that they do not carry all the types of cheese in your shopping list.

    4. What about quality in general? Grocery stores tend to cater to as wide a customer base as possible. There’s a strong chance that the blue cheese on the freezers are low-priced commercial type that make you doubt whether it’s up to your discriminating taste.

Thus, it can be a real challenge to find the kind of blue cheese that you really want. Once you find it, their distance from your home can possibly be daunting.

    2. They deliver to your home. For another $10 to $20 you can have your much coveted cheese within 2-3 days.

The second cheddar selection on our list, this Australian cheese is the pick of TODAY Producer/Editor Bianca Brosh, who buys it wherever she can find it. It bites back, with bold nutty tones up front and a hint of creamy sweetness at the end, she says. She particularly enjoys it paired with a crisp Sauvignon Blanc.

This take on classic broccoli cheese soup uses Stilton blue cheese in place of cheddar for a tangier classic. If you dont have chicken stock on hand, use chicken bullion combined with water as a substitute!

The higher quality the ground turkey, the better your burger will be. I prefer to purchase organic ground turkey at a local grocery store. I can usually find organic ground turkey at Whole Foods or Wegmans. I also order it from Butcher Box Meat Delivery when they have it available.

Most of the ground turkey I purchase is 90% lean but you can get it more or less lean depending on your preference.

These flavourful cheeses are popular with connoisseurs yet still relatively unfamiliar to many people. Though they do not constitute a separate cheese family, veined cheeses are well represented in the soft-curd, semi-firm curd and firm-curd cheese families.

Blue cheeses are named for the blue and green veins running through their curd. The process used to make them is similar to that of other cheeses. The main difference is that they are seeded with penicillium roqueforti, microscopic mushroom cultures. These cultures give blue cheeses their distinctive taste and veins.

None of the shelf-stable varieties we tried had a strong blue cheese flavor, but the blue cheese taste in Kens shone through more than its competitors. The dressings base also has a pleasant tartness, so if you like your blue cheese dressing slightly on the sour side, Kens is the variety for you.

    How To Store It

Stored carefully and appropriately, blue cheese should last a few weeks in your refrigerator. Store it in the coolest, driest part some experts recommended the crisper and keep it well wrapped in the cheese paper it came in, if possible. That paper will keep it fresh longer, and if it was wrapped properly, it will be easy to rewrap, Jones says.

Cheeses are often wrapped in plastic wrap for display purposes. If when you purchased it, the blue cheese was wrapped in plastic wrap, you may want to rewrap it in parchment which is porous and then loosely in aluminum foil or beeswax wrap, because blue cheese needs to breathe. Anything to promote air circulation, says Jones. If its stored while wrapped airtight, it will spoil faster. Moisture will build up inside the packaging, and the cheese will turn a yellowish color or produce yellowish mold, and it will start to smell putrid.

Blue cheese should also be stored away from other cheeses, because its blue mold has a tendency to travel. If you store a blue cheese with other cheeses, after a day or so, theyll turn blue, too. Nancy Pasquariello, a cheesemonger at Greenwich Cheese Company in Cos Cob, Conn., has a clever tip for this. At home, I use a Tupperware sandwich container which lets just enough air circulate without allowing the blue spores to spread to other cheeses as a mini home cheese cave for my blue cheeses, which I store in the crisper, she says.

What If I Cant Find Blue Cheese Crumbles

If you cant find blue cheese crumbles at your local grocery store, you can substitute them for gorgonzola crumbles. I find both of these cheeses in the gourmet cheese section of the grocery store, but Ive also seen packages near the salad area.

If by some chance you cant find either, then leave out the cheese and use some extra blue cheese dressing on the rolls or to dip the burger in.

    How To Serve It

Blue cheese is distinctive and complex enough to be eaten on its own. On a cheeseboard, blue is usually positioned as the strongest selection, opposite the mildest cheeses, like fresh chevre and buttery bries. But there are many exceptions. Blue cheeses with stronger flavors tend to go well with a bite of something sweet: slices of fresh pear or apple, a handful of grapes, dried figs or honey. Milder blues, or those with woodsy or herbal flavors, taste nice with fresh or sun-dried tomatoes, roasted garlic, walnuts, hazelnuts, mustard, olives or roasted mushrooms.

Famously, in James Joyces Ulysses, Leopold Bloom has a glass of wine and a Gorgonzola and mustard sandwich, cut into strips, for lunch: Mr Bloom ate his strips of sandwich, fresh clean bread, with relish of disgust, pungent mustard, the feety savour of green cheese. Sips of his wine soothed his palate.

Indeed, wine is a common accompaniment. Port, which tends to be sweet and rich, is a superclassic pairing, says Jones, but even a dry riesling, or medium-bodied to bigger reds, barley wine, stouts, whisky and, surprisingly, pumpkin beer are great.

If youre looking for something crumbly, for a salad or blue cheese dressing, consider Cashel, a Danish blue, Maytag, Rogue Creamerys signature blue or Roquefort.

For a creamy, meltable blue, for burgers or pasta or stirred into a soup, try Cambozola, Fourme dAmbert, Stilton or Gorgonzola Dolce.

Originally, I thought about adding carrots and blue cheese to the burger but I didnt want that crunch. However, I think a crunchy broccoli salad with shredded carrots and small chunks of celery would taste great with this burger.

If youre craving the classic burgers and fries meal, I highly recommend making roasted sweet potato fries. So yummy! You can also serve a side of roasted vegetables like carrots and asparagus or a summer salad.

What Does Blue Cheese Taste Like

The flavor of blue cheese varies among the different cheeses. Typically, blue cheese is sharp and salty, with other flavor variations. One sheeps milk variety, Roquefort, is crumbly in texture and is considered to have intense flavor with some sweet notes. On the other hand, young Gorgonzola is soft, creamy, and only slightly sharp.

How To Use Blue Cheese Dressing

Other than using your blue cheese dressing as is, there are tons of ways you can incorporate it into your food.

Use this dressing to make a variety of marinades for meats and vegetables. These types of marinades will go exceptionally well with neutrally flavored ingredients such as eggplants or poultry items. It will create a harmonious symphony of flavors that most other dressings wouldnt be able to.

You can also use this blue cheese marinade as a basting sauce. Try mixing it with your favorite peanut butter and while a whole chicken is roasting, baste it every 10 minutes. It sounds weird we know, but trust us!

You can also use your blue cheese dressing inside various meals. Have you ever tried macaroni and blue cheese? To die for!

There are so many creative and mouth-watering flavor combinations waiting to be discovered.

Here is where we might be pushing it too far for some of you, but you can try to make a blue cheese ice cream or a blue cheese cheesecake. These days there arent any rules as to what you can and cannot do. We certainly love these unique and revolutionary desserts.

    What Is Blue Cheese

Produced in almost every cheesemaking country across the globe, blue cheese gets its namesake color and signature flavor from one of two types of mold: Penicillium roqueforti or Penicillium glaucum.

All blue cheeses are made the same way as other cheeses. Cow, sheep, goat or nondairy milk is heated, and cultures including Penicillium roqueforti or glaucum and rennet are added. The whey is drained off, and the curds are formed into wheels or other shapes. They may be pressed into molds, wrapped or left exposed to the air.

Crucially for most traditional blue cheese, makers use long needles to pierce each round or block. This allows oxygen to circulate inside, which the mold spores need to grow. Then, the cheese is allowed to age. Where it ages, at what temperature and humidity and for how long, help determine its final flavors and textures.

For blues that are pierced, the mold spores turn into blue or green veins that spread throughout the interior of the cheese.

For other blue cheeses, the mold isnt introduced during the heating process. Rather, these cheeses are rubbed with roqueforti or glaucum. They arent pierced, so theres no veining. This results in a much milder finished cheese.

Blue Cheese Made With Raw Milk Only

How to Buy Cheese at a Cheese Store – CHOW

Unfortunately, most of the cheese youll find in stores is made from pasteurized and homogenized milk. Dairy is good only when it comes from raw milk. You may have to go beyond your local grocery store to find blue cheese thats made from raw milk, but its well worth the hassle.

When milk is purified through those processes , it loses a lot of bacteria and enzymes. This microbial life is perfect for gut health and makes dairy entirely worth it, even if youre on a paleo diet.

    What Is Blue Cheese Dressing

A blue cheese dressing is one of the most delicious and flavorful dressings that has ever been commercialized.

It usually consists of a very pungent and aromatic blue cheese, creamy mayonnaise, some form of dairy , a splash of vinegar, and some flavorful spices.

A blue cheese dressing mainly comes in two consistencies, each for its own purpose. You get blue cheese salad dressings, which have a very thin, runny consistency, perfect for drizzling over foods and salads.

Then you get a thicker sauce that functions more as a dip for crudites and chips.
