How To Get Vegan Cheese To Melt

Vegan cheese should melt if you heat it up in the same way milk-based milk will melt, but not all vegan cheese is melty. If youre looking for vegan melty cheese, the best thing to do is to try out a few brands, or you can look specifically for vegan pizza cheese, which was invented with melting type properties needed for pizza cheese.

Does Vegan Cheese Taste Good

As mentioned above, vegan cheese has come a long way since 2008, when Daiya was pretty much the only one on the market. Nowadays, there are so many delicious vegan cheeses in grocery stores even supermarkets in small towns often have dairy alternatives these days.

While there are certainly some vegan cheeses that could fool a dairy lover into thinking they were eating cheese from a cow, if thats what youre used to eating, dont expect vegan cheese to taste exactly the same. To an avid cheese-eater, vegan cheese will probably taste pretty darn close, but a little different or more subtle in flavor.

When I went vegan, I didnt try any store-bought vegan cheeses until a few weeks had passed since I last ate dairy. I was already a bit distanced from the taste of dairy cheese, so when I fried up my first vegan grilled cheese, I was blown away by how similar and amazing it tasted.

Can you grate it? Yes you can. It is firm enough to grate. It tends to get firmer the longer its in the fridge, so if its not ideal for grating when its just set, it will be the next day.

Does it melt? Yes it does. It is not the kind of melty cheese that is going to spread over pizza, but it does melt a bit and soften when heated. So you can absolutely grate some and use it on a pizza. It wont spread, but it will still be delicious.

Can I mash it? Yes, its soft enough to mash over your cracker if you like it mashed. Its soft enough to mash while still also being firm enough to grate. Its good stuff.

Earth Grown Vegan Mozzarella Style Sticks + Cheddar Style Sticks

EDITORS NOTE: View our roundup post of Earth Grown products here.

Mozzarella sticks are some of my favorite appetizers. There is nothing quite like that combination of crispy breading and gooey, stringy cheese filling. Add some marinara sauce or pizza sauce for dipping, and you have perfection.

Aldi sells cheese sticks year round, and theyre decent. Aldis cousin, Trader Joes, also sells cheese sticks that are hands-down my favorite.

Then, in January of 2021, Aldi sold vegan cheese-style sticks as a limited-time special.

Earth Grown Vegan Mozzarella Style Sticks and Earth Grown Vegan Cheddar Style Sticks cost $3.49 per 6.49-oz. package at the time of publication.

These are Aldi Finds , which means they are only in stores for a short time. Remember, Aldi does not offer online ordering with its specials, so once these sell out at your local store, theyre gone.

These are sold frozen, and they do not come with dipping sauce, so we used part of a jar of sauce. Each bag contains eight small sticks that are gluten free and vegetarian, and theyre a product of the United Kingdom.

Their first few ingredients include water, coconut oil, rice flour, gram flour, and potato starch. Farther down in this post are photos with the full ingredients list for each variety. There are no listed common allergens for these sticks.

I baked these as instructed when I served them initially. We had some leftovers, which I reheated later in my air fryer, and they turned out fine.

The Best Vegan Feta Cheese: Trmma Greek

I cant get enough of Sumears vegan cheese. As an ex-dairy cheesemaker, he uses his own secret blend of bacterial cultures and matures his cheese in a cave to create the UKs only long-aged cheeses with natural rinds.

His Trímma cheese is firm and crumbly with the most incredible salty tang, which would fool even the most staunch dairy lovers. Oh, and Sumear endeavours to be environmentally responsible through his use of eco-friendly packaging and pursuit to provide transparency.

What is Trímma made from?

Cashew nuts, tapioca starch, home-grown lactobacillus cultures, coconut oil, salt, kappa carrageenan.

Where can you buy it?

Due to the coronavirus, many of Sumears stockists had to shut, so his vegan cheese is mostly only available directly from his website. Nevertheless, keep an eye on his stockist page if you would like to find somewhere more local.

How is it prepared/cooked/eaten?

I just ate it straight out of the home-compostable wood pulp packaging but you can also crumble it on salads, melt it, or even use it as a pizza topping. Sumear suggests pairing it with a pinot noir wine with a light and fruity profile.

Sumear wins again with his authentic dairy-like flavours! This one is not for the faint-hearted though if you didnt like blue cheese before you went vegan, then you probably wont like this one.

What is Blue Roqueforti Verdure Cheese made from?

Cashew nuts, tapioca starch, home-grown lactobacillus cultures, coconut oil, salt, penicillium roqueforti.

Kite Hill Plain Cream Cheese Alternative

Kite Hill makes a variety of products, some we like and others we dont . This was the second most expensive brand.

Thoughts: This was a softer one, but thicker than say Trader Joes. What it compares too couldnt be pinpointed, but neither of us liked this brand at all.

Varieties: Plain, Chive, Everything, Garden Veggie

Ingredients: Almond Milk , Salt, Enzyme, Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum, Mushroom Extract , Lactic Acid, Citric Acid, Cultures.

Allergens: Almond
