Hot Ham And Cheese Thats Been Baked With Hawaiian Rolls And An Onion & Dijon Butter Sauce Make The Perfect Party Sandwiches

When I was a kid, wed make two sandwiches all the time: hot ham and cheese and tuna cheesies. Both were wrapped in tinfoil then baked in the oven until they were hot and the cheese was melted and gooey. These were the 80s version of party sandwiches.

We lived in a pretty small town and I still remember when we got our first fast-food joint. It was a Hardees and even then they served their hot ham and cheese sandwiches. My parents still love to tease me that theyd be going to the Pine Tree for a nice dinner and invite me along. Id always respond with just get me a hot ham and cheese, Dukes of Hazzard is on tonight.

So despite this hot ham and cheese recipe not being quite the same thing, it still brings fond memories to mind.

I make party sandwiches all the time, regardless of whether theres an actual party happening. Theyre so simple to make, even for lunch! And you cant beat them for dinner with a quick side salad.

These arent just plain old hot ham and cheese sandwiches, either. Theyre called party sandwiches for a reason! Yes, they have ham and cheese on a roll, but you bake them all at once the pour over a delicious buttery onion & Dijon flavored sauce that puts these bad boys over the top.

Best Cheese For Cold Sandwiches

In this recipe, I use some mature Irish cheddar cheese which is just wonderful and tasty and easy for us to purchase locally. I always prefer using an older and more matured cheese for these type of sandwiches. My preference is also to use cheese I have sliced myself rather than processed cheese slices. I just think it tastes better.

But of course, again the options are infinite. Different countries all have their own different cheeses and you will find that many of them, even though perhaps not what you are used to eating, are quite delicious.

If you are in Switzerland for example, you may find some slices of Emmentaler or Gruyère in your ham and cheese sandwich.

When we lived in the Netherlands, a slice of medium strength Gouda cheese would normally find its way into the lunchtime sandwiches. All these cheeses will change the character of your sandwich, so choose what you prefer.

What Types Of Cheeses Can I Use

Really, you can use any type you prefer. I used pepper jack because it there are extra spices and peppers embedded in the cheese slices that add extra flavor. However, you dont have to use that if you dont like spicy flavors. Just use a cheese that melts really well. You could use:

  • Cheddar
  • Even a sliced blue cheese if the feeling struck you..

There are a few more steps involved than slapping a piece of ham and cheese between two pieces of bread. But believe me, its worth it. This is no mere snack were crafting here, this is an event. That moment when you pull this oozing, molten beauty out of the oven, and take that first bite its truly one of the most heavenly eating experiences one can have on this fragile earth!

What Cheese Is Best With Ham

Swiss cheese is the go-to for ham, and thats what I usually use. Cheddar and ham go wonderful together, but it doesnt melt as well so I avoid using it in this recipe. Smoked Gouda is delicious and is perfect for a more grown-up party sandwich.

And, although I havent tried it yet, brie with sliced apples could be a winner.

What I Love About Ham And Cheese Sliders

Hot Ham and Swiss Cheese Sandwiches — Lynn’s Recipes

One of my very favorite things about this recipe is they are just as good made ahead of time. Assemble them as you normally would, then stick them in the refrigerator until youre ready for dinner. All you need to do is pop the sliders in the oven and bake them. Seriously, this makes dinner time doable even on days when Im stuck in a tractor.

I usually make enough to feed a crowd, which makes them the perfect party sandwich. I like to make a bunch and freeze leftover sandwiches for later. Its so handy to pull them out of the freezer and throw them in the boys lunches. Goodbye PB& J!

The other super cool thing about these hot sandwiches is that you can switch the flavors up by using different types of cheeses and meats. Its also fun to add other things like pickles too. The sky is the limit! Let your creative juices flow and see what you come up with! Leave me a comment at the bottom of the post and let me know what combo you try!

How Do I Assemble This Hot Ham Sammy

The trickiest thing is the croissant dough. When it comes out of that jack in the box tube, and you unroll it, youll just have to press the seams together because they are perforated for the croissant roll-ups. Other than that, its simple!

  • Preheat oven
  • place in pan and pre-bake
  • remove and spread the mustard and layer the toppings
  • place the final bunch of dough on top
  • butter and bake!

They come together pretty darn quick and easy, so you can feed a few ppl all at once. AND, if you make two at a time, you can feed a crowd! Plus, if you are feeding an even bigger crowd, you can make these Easy Italian Sliders and/or my Chicken Cordon Bleu sliders as well! They are seriously a hit at EVERY function I make them for!

Now that the weather has teased us with bits of spring for a couple of weeks, Ive loved being outside as much as possible. Whether Im outside playing with Ranger and Miss Annabelle or checking in on things around the farm, it really is my favorite place to be.

Yall know by now that I am all about simple living which includes simple, yet delicious recipes. Even though cooking and entertaining are my favorite things to do, I still believe simplicity is the best.Thats why I immediately knew the recipe I would recreate from one of my most memorable picnics Ive ever taken. My husband and I were on our honeymoon in Mackinac Island, Michigan and the hotel where we were staying prepared a picnic lunch for us and had it delivered to an area on the grounds of the hotel. After a full morning of riding bikes and exploring the island, I was blown away when we just happened upon this beautiful picnic basket filled to the brim with the perfect picnic.

Talk about romantic!

One of my favorite parts of the basket was a simple hot ham and cheese sandwich on a loaf of French bread. I knew that sandwich had to be part of my perfect picnic basket, along with my husbands favorite broccoli slaw, grapes, chips, water, and fresh flowers.

Hot Ham And Cheese Sandwiches:

These sandwiches are so easy to make it’s one of those that I almost feel silly calling a “recipe” but I hope you all love them as much as my family does, and I’ll tell you how I like to perfect them at my house!

  • You can use thick or thin ham, whichever you like. I always get the super thin sliced ham straight from my deli. Then, I layer a few pieces of ham, then a piece of cheese. I repeat the layers twice for a nice hearty sandwich.
  • Toasting the buns is totally optional. I butter them, then toast under the broiler for about 2 minutes before assembling the sandwiches. If you like a softer bun, don’t toast them first.
  • You can use any kind of cheese obviously, whatever your family prefers! We love mozzarella cheese the best, but of course, Swiss, cheddar or Monterey Jack are also great!
  • The dijonnaise is also optional. It’s simply a mixture of mayonnaise and spicy or dijon mustard. Just adds some extra flavor and we happen to love it.

A quick note about cooking these sandwiches. I typically bake them at home for a super fast 10 minute dinner. However, you can absolutely grill these as well! There a great sandwich for camping. You will just want to assemble the sandwiches, wrap in foil, and grill for a few minutes until the cheese is melted.

Enjoy!

Hot Ham And Cheese Sliders: The Easiest Game Day Snack

As someone who is really just into the big game for the snacks, I of course take my game day menu very seriously.

In addition to appetizers like French Onion Chip Dip and Pizza Dip, I like to have a couple of sandwich options alongside Jo Jo Potato Wedges and Macaroni Salad.

In the past I have thrown together Instant Pot Pulled Pork, but this year I am all about these easy Ham and Cheese Sliders.

The first time I made these sliders, my family inhaled them. As much as I love them for game day, theyre also perfect for an easy weeknight dinner or family movie/game night snack.

If your kids are old enough for sleepovers, I think theyd be super fun for sleepover snacks as well!

As great as the combo of ham, cheese, and Hawaiian rolls is, its the buttery herb topping that really takes these sliders over-the-top.

How To Make The Best Ham And Cheese Hoagie Ever

Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwich with Michael’s Home Cooking

The real secret is sublety.

This is the best recipe for a hoagie ever, at least in my opinion. It is inspired by Reds Hoagies & Groceries, a 73-year-old neighborhood corner store in South Philadelphia, which I visited several times reporting my essay on the history of the Big Sandwich. Reds, which is at the corner of South Ninth and Mifflin Streets, is not famous or anything. In fact it was a recommendation from the crossing guard at a nearby elementary school.

I will admit that on myfirst visit I had low expectations, given Reds half-bare shelves and unhurried air. I let the counterman a nephew of Red, who was called that because of his carrot top guide my order. I told him I wanted the regulars favorite. That, he explained to me, was a ham and cheese hoagie with pepper seed, which appeared to be dried hot red cherry peppers with a little oil and vinegar. I actually still had low expectations when I opened my sandwich, because it seemed kind of skimpy for a hoagie . The Reds ham and cheese with pepper seed had mayo, thinly sliced white onion, a paper thin piece of tomato, pepper seed and the thinnest, saddest layer of plain ham and white American cheese.

My Reds Ham and Cheese Hoagie

1 soft sandwich loaf, such as a hoagie roll, po-boy bread or Cuban loaf Mayonnaise 1/4 pound thinly sliced deli ham 1/4 pound thinly sliced white American cheese 1 ripe tomato, thinly sliced 1/2 big sweet white onion, shaved or sliced paper thin

So Lets Talk About The Ham What Choices Are There

You can use any ham you love for your sandwich. Here are a few options that taste amazing!

  • Honey Ham adds sweetness to the sandwich without being overbearing.

  • Smoked Virginia Ham The smokiness is delicious and adds tons of flavor!

  • Peppered Ham has some spice to it and has a rich flavor that cant be beaten.

  • Spiral Ham If you have a holiday dinner or any other occasion and end up with leftover spiral ham, it makes the most fantastic sandwich!
  • You can also use a Black forest ham, shaved thin. This is what I used today for my sandwich.

How To Make Ham And Cheese Sliders

In just a few minutes you can throw together a whole bunch of these cheese and ham sandwiches. Its also a really good recipe for the kids to help make because its so easy.

  • Cut rolls in half. If the rolls are attached thats even better. Just cut the whole thing at once and make one big sandwich then cut it into pieces after it cooks.
  • Set the bottoms of the rolls in a greased pan.
  • Layer deli ham on the roll bottoms.
  • Add a layer of sliced cheese.
  • Replace the top halves of rolls.
  • Melt butter and mix poppy seeds, Worcestershire, onion powder, and mustard.
  • Brush butter mixture over rolls.
  • Bake.

Best Cheeses For Adding A Punch Of Flavor To Grilled Cheese //

Roth Gouda is a great melting cheese as well, but also has a distinct flavor that can only be found in a Gouda cheese. Punch it up even more and use a Smoked Gouda. I love this with thin slices of apple and Dijon mustard.

Buttermilk Blue is creamy, tangy, and mellow. I love the unexpected punch of blue cheese in a grilled cheese sandwich. It is too much for me on its own in a sandwich but paired with Havarti, there is plenty of blue cheese kick that is mellowed out by the creamy cheese. For this sandwich, I like a thin layer of fig jam and some prosciutto slices on a fruited bread with some finely chopped rosemary inside.

Chèvre might not be the first cheese you think of in a grilled cheese, but believe me when I tell you, it works. This goats milk cheese is tangy, but also mild. This is particularly delicious on an open-faced grilled cheese. I like to melt Gouda on the bottom, spread Chèvre on top of that, sun-dried tomatoes, basil, and a handful of arugula. Its a knife and fork-er, but a perfect brunch sammie.
