Papa Johns Adds A New Stuffed Crust Pizza To The Menu
The new Epic Stuffed Crust Pizza is coming to Papa Johns menu on Monday.
To create the pizza, Papa Johns hand-stuffs its original crust with extra mozzarella cheese and tops the pizza with its signature pizza sauce and more cheese.
The long-awaited debut of the item was inspired by Papa Johns customers, according to a statement released by the chain.
Stuffed crust lovers are passionate pizza fans, and it is something our fans continue to ask for, said Tom Smith, Papa Johns director of culinary innovation. Since quality crust is at our core, were excited to deliver stuffed crust lovers an experience theyre sure to enjoy.
Papa Johns Papa Rewards members will get the first shot at trying the new pizza from Monday through Dec. 27 at select locations. The chain is giving them a chance to taste the pie before it launches nationwide on Dec. 28. A large one-topping pizza is $12 with the promo code STUFFED.
Menu R& D has been ongoing at Papa Johns in 2020. The chain introduced six new products this year, including the Papadia, an Italian flatbread-style sandwich, and Jalapeno Popper Rolls.
The chain benefited from the surge in delivery during the pandemic. In April alone, same-store sales were up 27% year over year, with customers ordering pizzas as well as the new Papadias.
The Dough Is Frozen But The Cheese Is Added In
As you sit and think about stuffed crust and how it’s made, the concept may be astonishing for some. But, it’s really quite simple.
According to one Pizza Hut employee on Reddit, it all starts with the proprietary frozen dough. “The dough comes frozen in boxes. It’s prepared by spraying a pan/cooking sheet with non-stick spray and then laying the dough in it and putting it in the walk in freezer to thaw overnight,” they said. Once the dough is thawed and ready in the morning, they can prep it for stuffed crust, hand tossed, or other varieties of pizza.
To make the stuffed crust, the Pizza Hut Employee on Reddit says it all starts with the hand tossed dough. Employees pull the edges past the cooking tray, adding string cheese along the edge, and then folding it back over. Just like that you have that magically golden crust stuffed with gooey mozzarella!
Pizza Hut Has Introduced Multiple Meat Stuffed Crust Pizzas Over The Years
As if stuffing a ton of cheese into their pizza crust wasn’t enough, Pizza Hut had to continue on to figure out ways to reinvent stuffed crust and keep things interesting. One way they’ve done that is by adding meat to the crust.
According to Business Insider, Pizza Hut introduced a hot-dog-stuffed crust pizza in 2015, making its debut in the UK and Canada, and eventually moving into the states. The one-topping pizza featured 28 hot dog bites baked into the crust, offering the mixture of everyone’s favorite American foods hot dogs and pizza.
But that was just the beginning. In 2016, Pizza Hut decided everything would be better with bacon, especially their stuffed crust. According to Business Insider, the company had debuted a version of bacon and cheese stuffed crust in 2014, but this was an updated recipe with three types of cheese and Applewood smoked bacon, providing the ultimate pizza for the bacon lover.

For one, Donald Trump, who was the first spokesperson for Pizza Hut’s stuffed crust, is now the sitting U.S. President. According to Business Insider, the commercial debuted in 1995 after Pizza Hut had tried a number of marketing techniques for the new introduction. “They tried to sell it a million times, a million different ways, and it just wouldn’t sell,” Janet Lyons told Business Insider, who was one of the creative directors tasked with selling stuffed crust pizza.

Some of their tacos have a crispy melted cheese layer which basically acts like a cheese tortilla for the ingredients. And it got me thinking, what if I could create something similar for pizza?
Thankfully my cheese supply has been replenished. You might recall that back when I shared my Cauliflower Crusted Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, I was in panic that my Cabot cheese supply was almost gone from the year supply I had won. Thankfully the second shipment of my year supply arrived and Ive been trying to be better at making it last, but its really hard since my automatic reaction when I have an abundance of an ingredient is to come up with a bunch of recipe ideas. Step 1: Combine the cheese, eggs, and seasonings together in a food processor until mostly smooth.

Pizza Hut is doubling down on one of its classic innovations as the pandemic-era pizza wars rage.
In a nod to the 25th anniversary of stuffed crust’s debut, Pizza Hut is offering a pizza-less ring of cheese-stuffed dough.
The name? “Nothing But Stuffed Crust,” of course.
The cheesy promotion which comes just weeks after rival Papa John’s rolled out its own stuffed crust pizza is limited to participating locations in Dallas and Los Angeles this Tuesday through Thursday. The company says Nothing But Stuffed Crust is free for the first 50 customers who make a $10 purchase. Customers can also buy a three-topping stuffed crust pizza for $11.99 for a limited time at participating restaurants.
“Many have tried to recreate it, but there’s still only ONE original stuffed crust pizza,” Pizza Hut said in a statement.
Competition among big chains has been fierce during the coronavirus pandemic, which has fueled a surge in pizza demand from Americans who are spending more time at home and avoiding dine-in restaurants. Papa John’s, Domino’s and Pizza Hut began hiring thousands of new employees in the spring.
On October 29, Pizza Hut’s parent company Yum! Brands reported the chain’s offsite sales had surged 17%-21% during the third quarter of 2020. Pizza Hut also opened 148 new restaurants in 32 countries during the same time frame, according to financial records.

Pizza isn’t really known for its healthy qualities. It’s made up of carbs, carbs, and more carbs topped with sauce, meats, veggies, and cheese. So when you add even more cheese by literally stuffing it into the crust, one might think your calorie count will go way up.
Well, stuffed crust lovers rejoice! As it turns out, stuffed crust doesn’t actually add that many more calories to your meal.
