Health Benefits Of Vegan Cheese And How To Choose The Best Option For You
First, if you are lactose intolerant and your body responds with digestive symptoms after eating dairy cheese, switching to a vegan cheese is a healthier option for you. Whats more, soy-based cheese has been found to be low in certain carbohydrates called FODMAPs, and some people with irritable bowel syndrome find following a low-FODMAP diet useful in managing their digestive symptoms, notes a study published in June 2018 in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
Yet whether vegan cheese offers health benefits beyond those of dairy cheese isnt clear. Nutrition isnt about just one type of food, its about someones overall eating pattern, says Wolfram. There are pros and cons to each choice from a nutrition standpoint: While vegan cheese doesnt have cholesterol and may have less saturated fat than dairy cheese, it also is much lower in protein and calcium, unless fortified, she adds.

It Cant Be Dairy So What Goes Into Vegan Cheese Alternatives
Vegan cheese made with cashews
The appetite for fake foods that try to evoke old favourites escapes me. Why would anybody want a bleeding veggie burger? Or rubbery slices of cheese alternative?
Why not just eat something else?
But one food many vegans and the lactose-intolerant miss is cheese.
Now it is surprisingly easy to find a variety of cheese substitutes in supermarkets and health food shops. So what can you tell about these products from the labels?
The first thing you notice is that many are made from soya beans or nuts, such as cashews, and oil. Take Tofutti Creamy Smooth, which describes itself as the delicious soya alternative to cream cheese. It is made by British company Triano Brands and the original flavour product is made from: water, cold-pressed natural oil blend , maltodextrin, soy protein, tofu , non-dairy lactic acid, sugar, stabiliser and salt. So its mostly water and oil. The gloopy cheesy feel comes mostly from the soy protein and tofu, which is soya bean curd.
It is made from soya beans, which are from the same family as peas and have been grown in China for thousands of years. The difference now is that many of those beans in processed foods are genetically-modified ones grown in the United States or Brazil, the worlds biggest exporters.
Non-dairy lactic acid is made by fermenting sugars from carbohydrates such as cornstarch, potatoes or molasses.

Firm Or Meltable Cheese
First, you will also need to decide if you want a firm sliceable cheese or a softer cheese that will melt and stretch when heated. .
- The firm version is best for slicing for eating plain or on crackers.
- The meltable version is best for cheese that you can melt on pizza, use in grilled cheese sandwiches, or quesadillas. The only difference between the two versions is the addition of tapioca starch and the reduction of agar agar to allow it to melt and stretch better.

Everything You Need To Know About Vegan Cheese
Vegan cheesemakers are busy these days providing us with delicious concoctionsand new brands are popping up all over the place. The availability of new products, along with our favorite vegan cheese staples, makes it an exciting time for anyone looking to eat compassionately. Eating cheese made from cows milk contributes to a system in which mother cows are repeatedly sexually abused and their calves are taken away from them so that their milk can be stolen. Mother cows experience intense physical and emotional pain for the duration of their lives, only to be tossed aside when they become less productive for the people who profit from their milk.
When you choose vegan cheese, you use your power as a consumer to show that you wont support this cycle of pain. Vegan cheeses can be made from a variety of nuts, most commonly cashews, almonds, and macadamias. These plant-based sources contain healthy fats but no cholesterol, rennet, or any other gross ingredients found in cheese made from cows milk.

My Story: How I Transitioned From Dairy
I wasnt born a vegan. Oh, no. I was very much brought up in a traditional American household with lots and lots of meat, milk, and cheese. Meat, I could do without, to be honest, which made it easy for me to go vegetarian when I was just 8 years old. But milk? And cheese? They were my jam.
So when I picked up a copy of Animal Liberation at a used bookstore in college and learned that the dairy industry was even more horrifying as the meat industry, I was feeling overwhelmed, to say the least. I knew I wanted to stop eating dairy and fairly quickly transitioned to soy and almond milk. But cheese?
How will I live without cheese?
At the time I dumped it on everythingpasta with loads of parmesan, pizza loaded with mozz. There was cheese in my go-to burritos, sandwiches, quesadillas, you name it. Whatever I was eating, it was hardly a complete meal without cheese. This was going to be hard.
And let me tell you, at the time , there werent a zillion vegan cheese options like there are today. In fact, there werent any in my college town of Cleveland, Ohio. So I went without.
Painful? Surprisingly, not really! I thought it was going to be a huge challenge, a sacrifice I was making for the animals. But truth be told, I quickly acclimated to equally delicious alternatives.
Today, you dont have to give up cheese at all!

Vegan Cheeses Have Plenty Of Fats
Before we look deeper in to this, this does not mean that vegan cheeses are bad for you, just because they’re full of fats.
But because coconut oil and cashews, amongst other nuts are some of the most used ingredients in vegan cheeses, it means that a lot of vegan cheeses, the majority actually, will be high in fat.
Nuts though are a great form of healthy fats and have many other nutritional benefits too, so if you’re swapping out dairy cheese for vegan cheese, you can actually improve your diet just by choosing cheeses made of nuts.
How To Eat Vegan Cheese
- You can have this vegan cheese as an appetizer or even a snack and serve it with tortilla chips, crudités, pita bread or whatever you want.
- Its also a good alternative to real cheese to make pizza, lasagna, or pretty much anything that is made with cheese. I also add it to my burgers sometimes instead of sliced cheese.

Some Of The Most Common Ingredients To Create Vegan Cheese Are
Soy has become one of the most common animal product alternatives, like milk and meat. It is also one of the common bases for vegan cheese due to its texture and taste. Soy or soy protein like tofu is usually combined with oils and flavorings to craft it into cheese. However, some soy-based cheese may be blended with Casein, which makes the cheese not vegan.
Nuts and Seeds
These are commonly used for milk, nuts are also used to create cheeses. Tree nuts such as cashews, almonds, pecans, and macadamia, are a common base as well as edible seeds like sunflower and pumpkin seeds. The nuts or seeds are often soaked, blended, and fermented using traditional cheese aging bacteria to become vegan cheese.
Starch is another base ingredient used for making vegan cheese. Common starches use flour from tapioca, potato, corn, and arrowroot, among many others.
Yeast has been used as a substitute for powdered cheese. It can be close to the flavor of cheese and has high amounts of nutrients and protein.
Coconut milk, cream, or oil
These ingredients are used as a base or as an emulsifier. Additionally, aquafaba, or the liquid from canned chickpeas is also used in making stretchy cheeses, as well as other plants, like aloe vera and carrageenan.

Whats all the noise about going vegan. Many celebrities are coming forward to embrace this way of life. So, is it all about healthy eating or only plant food? Veganism and vegetarianism are quite different from each other, Veganism more relates to ethical considerations, whereas the latter mostly stems from religious or environmental regard. Making Dairy Cheese Vs Vegan Cheese
Dairy cheese is made out of casein, which is a type of milk protein derived from cow, goat, sheep or buffalo milk. During the production process, an assortment of enzymes, called rennet, is incorporated into the milk. Rennet is released in the stomach of the dairy animals and it is responsible for the coagulation of milk to form cheese. While there are some alternative methods for making dairy cheeses, rennet allows for the production of cheeses of various styles, flavours and textures.
On the contrary, vegan cheese is wholly plant-based and involves fortification of protein mass from different plants with lactic bacteria. Emulsifiers, thickeners and oils are frequently used too in the production process to make firmer vegan cheeses.
The options of vegan cheeses on the market have increased over the years, making it easier for people to follow vegan and other dairy-free diets. So, if you want some vegan-friendly cheese, then you know what youll get!
