How to Make a Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich

We tend to make our ham and cheese sandwiches with a multigrain bread from Aldi which makes it a pretty healthy ham cheese sandwich. But again, the possibilities are endless.

On the continent, in France, a baguette is the most used bread for a jambon et fromage sandwich. But you can of course use whatever you have available where you are. A few nice slices of fresh crusty sourdough, some soft white sliced bread or even some nice baps are all great for making a good ham and cheese sandwich.

Basically, make it with what you have available, and if you are putting it in your lunchbox, then keep it in a bag or airtight container to keep it fresh for longer.

I hope if you have never tried one of these you will give it a go. The variations are endless as discussed .

All variations add their own charms!

Enjoy!

Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich

Chicken cordon bleu is typically made by stuffing ham and cheese inside a chicken breast, but for this sandwich, we’re stacking the ham and cheese on top of buns, popping it in the broiler, then adding the chicken.

For a better result, we recommend a brine of buttermilk for the chicken breast for as little as 8 hours and ideally for 48 hours in the refrigerator. Once the chicken is ready, pat-dry and coat with flour and salt and pepper before frying. To make your sandwich, spread mustard on bread and put bread halves with cheese on one and ham on the other under a broiler. Place fried chicken cutlet on top of one half and close with the other on top. Serve hot with some kale chips.

Pepper Jack Makes A Tasty Turkey Sandwich

Pepper Jack is super melty and will liven up plain turkey with a peppery spice flavor. A good quality Wisconsin pepper jack will have fresh peppers instead of dry. This really imparts the fruit flavor of the peppers into your leftover turkey melt or sandwich.

Turkey sandwiches for a crowd made with any of the above cheese will go well. The cheese gives an extra dimension to the turkey melt. Plus, its easy on your wallet as you have already paid for the turkey.

How Do You Make This Grilled Ham And Cheese Melt

So with todays grilled sandwich, I simply used the artisan bread that I mentioned earlier. Keep in mind, this sandwich is plenty big for two people to share. If you serve it with some of the things I mentioned above, two people can enjoy this epic sandwich!!

I cut two nice big slices and then buttered one side of it. This buttered side will be the BOTTOM layer of the sandwich.

After that, I just started layering the ingredients. I like putting cheese on both the bottom and top, kind of sandwiching the ham in the middle.

Then, put the other piece of bread on top of the cheese. I buttered the outside so that when you flip the sandwich in the pan, will become the bottom piece. I know it might sound confusing, but in the recipe below, I explain it a bit better!

I used a nice thin black forest ham for this sandwich. I like the briny flavor against the creamy, gooey-ness of the melted cheddar. Which, btw, was an old or sharp cheddar. And as a side note, please use butter, not margarine for the bread. This kind of sandwich is just taken to the next level when you use real butter!

The other key is to fry it low and slow. If you grill it too quickly, the bread will burn before the cheese melts. You want the sandwich to warm slowly, so the cheese gets a chance to get all melty and yummy as the bread toasts or, grills, in the pan.

When its done grilling, turn it out onto a nice board and give it a minute or two to settle. Then slice, and ENJOY!!

    Hot Ham And Cheese Sandwiches:

These sandwiches are so easy to make it’s one of those that I almost feel silly calling a “recipe” but I hope you all love them as much as my family does, and I’ll tell you how I like to perfect them at my house!

    • You can use thick or thin ham, whichever you like. I always get the super thin sliced ham straight from my deli. Then, I layer a few pieces of ham, then a piece of cheese. I repeat the layers twice for a nice hearty sandwich.
    • Toasting the buns is totally optional. I butter them, then toast under the broiler for about 2 minutes before assembling the sandwiches. If you like a softer bun, don’t toast them first.
    • You can use any kind of cheese obviously, whatever your family prefers! We love mozzarella cheese the best, but of course, Swiss, cheddar or Monterey Jack are also great!
    • The dijonnaise is also optional. It’s simply a mixture of mayonnaise and spicy or dijon mustard. Just adds some extra flavor and we happen to love it.

A quick note about cooking these sandwiches. I typically bake them at home for a super fast 10 minute dinner. However, you can absolutely grill these as well! There a great sandwich for camping. You will just want to assemble the sandwiches, wrap in foil, and grill for a few minutes until the cheese is melted.

    Enjoy!

Quick, easy-to-make tin foil ham and cheese sandwiches are perfect for lunch or dinner while youre camping, for an afterschool snack, or even a fun backyard picnic.

Enjoying simple sandwiches is one of lifes little pleasures. I am an avid baker and cook, but I also like simple meals that dont take much time or effort.

    Best Cheese For Cold Sandwiches

In this recipe, I use some mature Irish cheddar cheese which is just wonderful and tasty and easy for us to purchase locally. I always prefer using an older and more matured cheese for these type of sandwiches. My preference is also to use cheese I have sliced myself rather than processed cheese slices. I just think it tastes better.

But of course, again the options are infinite. Different countries all have their own different cheeses and you will find that many of them, even though perhaps not what you are used to eating, are quite delicious.

If you are in Switzerland for example, you may find some slices of Emmentaler or Gruyère in your ham and cheese sandwich.

When we lived in the Netherlands, a slice of medium strength Gouda cheese would normally find its way into the lunchtime sandwiches. All these cheeses will change the character of your sandwich, so choose what you prefer.

Topping Options To Make A Killer Sandwich

You can make your sandwich with just bread, meat and cheese if you desire. Nothing wrong with that my lovely!! But, depending on my mood, I like to add some extra toppings to change the flavor and texture. Here are a few of the things I love to use:

    • Fresh vegetables Tomatoes, green peppers, and avocado are just a few things I use from time to time. When you add sliced tomato to the sandwich, the heat softens the tomato, adding this lovely enhanced tomato flavor. The tomato slice itself adds a bit of extra moisture to the layers, which I find super tasty!

    • Condiments Spicy mustard, mayonnaise, honey mustard, and horseradish are some great options!
    • Other topping ideas Black olives, pickles, and banana peppers would also terrific!

What Cheese Is Best With Ham

Swiss cheese is the go-to for ham, and thats what I usually use. Cheddar and ham go wonderful together, but it doesnt melt as well so I avoid using it in this recipe. Smoked Gouda is delicious and is perfect for a more grown-up party sandwich.

And, although I havent tried it yet, brie with sliced apples could be a winner.

What Sides Go With A Tin Foil Ham And Cheese Sandwich

    Bay Area Classic Ham Sandwich

You could have so much fun with sides for this sandwich. If you have an air fryer, my Garlic Parmesan Air Fryer French Fries would the perfect addition to this sandwich. Or, perhaps your family would prefer my broccoli slaw salad or a perfect pasta salad.

The sandwich is super simple to throw together. We really like the sweetness the butter sauce gave the sandwich, so dont be afraid to use it all. The rolls get toasted on the grill and the cheese melts to the foil a little bit, so you get those crispy, tasty cheese bits on the foil that you cant resist picking off
