The Horrific And True Story Behind Chuck E Cheese

Chuck E. Cheese declared bankruptcy last week and announced the permanent closing of 34 locations. The location about two miles from my home is not on the list of closures, though if it were, I wouldnt be upset.

As a child, I didnt visit Chuck E. Cheese, which changes the way you view the restaurant as an adult. Without the gauzy curtain of childhood nostalgia, the awfulness of a Chuck E. Cheese is laid bare:

Bad pizza. Loud games. Poorly parented children. Creepy, animatronic rat.

But recently I discovered, thanks to a friend, that the story of Chuck E. Cheese is much worse.

The origin story for Chuck E. Cheese, published briefly on the companys website in 2012 as a digital book, is kind of horrific.

Chuck grew up in an orphanage. His middle name is Entertainment, which tells you a lot about the scumbag parents who ultimately abandoned him. Growing up with lots of orphaned children, Chuck had the chance to celebrate their many birthdays and quickly fell in love with the song Happy Birthday.

So his taste in music was nonexistent.

But because no one knew the date of Chucks birthday, his birthday was never celebrated.

Why someone didnt just invent a birth date for Chuck is beyond me. In school, we allow kids with summer birthdays to choose a day during the year to celebrate their pretend birthday. The human resources department of the orphanage didnt have a solution in place for kids left on their stoop without a passport?

Then tragedy strikes once again.

Does Chuck E Cheese Drug Test

Chuck E. Cheese does not appear to drug test applicants or their employees. While there is no mention of a drug test on the application, this does not mean that the company will not drug test. The company does reserve the right to drug test its employees and all applicants, so do pay attention to all employment applications and documents for any drug testing clause that may exist.

The Chuck E Cheese Characters Were Very Different In The 1980s

The current, canonical sob story of Chuck E. Cheese’s origin wasn’t how the character was initially conceived, though. At first, Bushnell envisioned his mascot as a coyote, which would necessitate calling his restaurant chain “Coyote Pizza.” The employees working to develop the mascot robot thought it was a rat, so they designed a rodent version of the character. Rather than scrap the work that had already been done, Bushnell leaned in and renamed his project “Rick Rat’s Pizza.” That didn’t go over with marketing teams that suggested associating a restaurant with an infestation of rats was a bad idea . Thus, Chuck E. Cheese was born.

Still, the first Chuck was nothing like the one we have today. Instead of the very modern, child-like version of Chuck that exists today, the character was a more cynical, world-weary, grumpy adult show business veteran. He was akin to a snarky, Don Rickles-style Vaudeville comedian. In the magazine, Mr. Cheese was described as a “street-wise, Jersey-born rat who makes rude comments and interrupts his guests.” The first animatronic Chuck scowled and had the kind of shifty eyes one might associate with a less than savory individual. The original 1979 version even carried a cigar! Progressively, his look evolved into the friendlier version that most millennials remember.

Good for kids birthday congratulations and fun with different games compact indoor arrangements

Have been coming to this location for many years with our kids. Those kids are now teens who decided to go out together one night. My wife and I suggested Chuck E Cheese. They went and were greeted at the door by a Manager whorudely turned them away, stating that kids under 18 couldnt go there by themselves. We asked about this policy, which I cant find stated anywhere, to be given a rude and condescending reply by the Corporate folks in Texas and an I dont really care and cant do much type of answer from the locations GM. I have been going to Chuck E Cheese since I was a kid, have taken my kids there more times than I can count and it seems really sad that this is the bad taste that will be left in my mouth. I have spent many 100s of dollars, if not more, over the years and none of the folks I dealt with really care to give any sort of decent customer service. I, nor anyone in my family will ever go back there.More

Some Of Those Needle Rumors Are False

East Side Chuck E. Cheese reopens doors Tuesday in El Paso

Sensationalized fake news has been getting a lot of attention these days, but propaganda and baseless scares have been around since the advent of the written word. Take, for example, the terrifying story of a boy who died of a heroin overdose after being pricked by a syringe left in a McDonalds ball pit. This frightening piece of gossip started circulating the internet cerca 1999.

As the tale went, a woman in Sugarland, Texas took her son to McDonalds to celebrate his third birthday in 1994. After 3-year-old Kevin finished his lunch, he plunged into the ball pit, where he was allegedly pierced by a hypodermic needle. After he began whimpering, his mother discovered a splinter of a needle beneath a welt on his buttock. Before she had a chance to take him to the hospital, he vomited, shook, rolled his eyes back into his head, and died.

According to the legend, the autopsy revealed Kevin had died of a heroin overdose and a subsequent police investigation found knives, feces, and used and full hypodermic needles within the McDonalds play pit. But as Snopes would later confirm, the chilling rumors of a 3-year-olds heroin overdose in a McDonalds ball pit were completely fabricated.

The Characters Have An Odd Fate

If you’ve been missing your old favorite characters for far too long, and you have some extra room in your basement, you may have been considered getting your hands on some of the old animatronics. It may seem like it shouldn’t be too hard, considering the company’s decision to remove the robot characters from all locations, you would think a wave of Chuck E. Cheese’s characters are about to flood the market. But it’s not that easy.

Chuck E. Cheese’s has a rather bizarre policy of destroying their characters once they’re retired. In the case of the actual Chuck E. Cheese character costume, which is worn by an employee who walks around, high-fiving guests, one restaurant location was filmed demolishing the head with a sledgehammer, though the normal policy would see the costume shipped to a warehouse where the deed could be performed out of eyesight. Meredith Rose, an intellectual property attorney who once worked in a New Jersey Chuck E. Cheese’s location, tells Atlas Obscura, “If you own this intellectual property writ large, you don’t want a secondary market to pop up.”

But where there is a will, there’s a way. Sets of the old characters do occasionally appear on Craigslist, like a 1985 Beach Bowzers set that asked a cool $5,000. A Rock-afire Explosion Band also appeared back in 2008 on eBay for a very reasonable $14,000.

    Sounds messed up, doesn’t it?

Most kids enjoy everything about Chuck E Cheese, but not all. Some kids were terrified by the animatronics performances inside the mouse’s happy place. I was one of the kids and it is a real fear. The technical name is automatonophobia.

Automatonophobia is a fear of human-like figures, such as mannequins, wax figures, statues, dummies, animatronics, or robots. – Healthline

I’m not a therapist but I wonder if this fear I eventually conquered had to do with some sort of malfunction during the show. Another possibility is the fact that the animatronics at Chuck E Cheese was still active when the performance was on downtime as if they were alive. Or, maybe something creepy like Helen’s mouthing missing reveals her innards.
