Mac & Cheese, it’s probably on most people’s Top 10 list of comfort foods and it’s a trending side now with many fast food restaurants, an alternative to the standard offering of fries.
Today, I’m sampling the mac & cheese versions of the comfort food and cult classic from three restaurants, Arby’s, Chick-fil-A and KFC.
Here’s my review in alphabetical order, with price, portion size, appeal and of course taste all factored in….
Arby’s White Cheddar Mac & Cheese: This was the most expensive of the three mac & cheeses sampled today, but it was also the biggest portion. Sadly, it was the worst of the bunch. I was looking forward to the White Cheddar twist on the comfort food classic and while that white cheddar flavor was prominent, the noodles were overcooked, gummy and the sauce was too thick and pasty. Priced at $2.99, the presentation was also a bit sloppy , the least appealing based on looks of the three dishes. This is NOT a repeat buy. Having to doctor the Arby’s Mac & Cheese with a lot of black pepper to make it palatable, I’m giving it 2 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. Arby’s Tater Cakes ROCK, their mac & cheese? Not so much….
I’m left wondering if there’s a better fast food mac & cheese out there. With mac & cheese trending, there just has to be…..

What Are The Typical Ingredients In Fast
Blais says that fast-food chain versions of mac and cheese typically have about 22 ingredients, which is about 10 more ingredients than an average store-bought box of mac and cheese, and about 16 more ingredients than homemade mac n’ cheese. Most of these ingredients, most notably soybean oil, modified food starch, and xanthan gum are added to keep the cheese sauce thick and creamy. These ingredients also help make the cheese taste and smell better, according to Blais, which is why you crave fast-food mac and cheese more than a box you would make at home. The cheese is often a combination of various processed cheeses, as well as turmeric and paprika to add in that familiar orange color.

We Tried Mac And Cheese From 4 Different Fast
As part of an ongoing taste-test series, INSIDER tried mac and cheese from four different fast-food restaurants.
We tested the offerings from Popeyes, Panera Bread, Boston Market, and KFC.
Popeyes was the winner.
Eaten as a side or as an entrée, mac and cheese is a classic comfort food that both kids and adults enjoy. If you want a bowl of cheesy goodness on the go, various fast-food chains offer a take on this simple but satisfying dish.
To determine where to get the best fast-food mac and cheese, INSIDER went to four restaurants as part of an ongoing taste-test series. We’ve previously tried everything from fried chicken and mashed potatoes to chocolate chip cookies and coffee.

Does Kfc Sell Mac And Cheese
Crafted as a main dish, Mac& Cheese Bowls combine KFC’s rich and creamy mac and cheese, topped with crispy popcorn chicken, and sprinkled with a three-cheese blend. … “Mac and Cheese has a cult-like following, and bowl food is a trend that isn’t going away anytime soon,” said Andrea Zahumensky, KFC U.S. CMO.
The Copykat Analysis Of Chick
I dont believe this is made with a dry mix or powder, because the flavor is too good. I believe their special cheddar blend comes in the form of American cheese because of the mouthfeel, but the flavor is not straight-up American cheese, it is more sophisticated.
I think it also helps to account for the indistinct cheeses they mention in their original recipe. Romano and Parmesan can cut through American cheese to give you a better flavor, and a more interesting texture.
I topped my version with Colby Jack cheese. The Monterey Jack melts wonderfully, and it browns up a bit. If you pay much attention, you will notice the restaurant version has the browning as well.

Los Angeles: Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery
There’s often a crushing line at this Santa Monica Italian deli with locals lining up for its epic cold-cut sandwich, the Godmother. But fans of the deli’s baked mac and cheese, consisting of elbow macaroni, eight different cheeses and a topping of crushed garlic croutons, say this decadent dish is also worth the wait. Be careful when ordering, though. Don’t confuse “the real deal mac and cheese” with the deli’s other, simpler side dish of pasta with cheese sauce. Pro tip: Skip the lines and order online for fast pickup at the counter.

Dont let anyone ever tell you mac and cheese is healthy. While the restaurants press release states the dish is baked fresh each day, that doesnt exactly scream nutritious. With the main ingredients being pasta and cheese, how could it? However, the portion sizes are appropriate to eat with a meal, so its not like youre ingesting five pounds of pasta like you might at Olive Garden .
Im no dietician, but something tells me 1190 mg of sodium and 29 grams of fat isnt necessarily healthy, but if youre not concerned about either of those variables, a cup of mac isnt going to hurt you.

Ok Enough About Health Which One Tastes The Best
When I go to a fast-food restaurant, I’m not usually picking items based on calorie count or sodium. While it’s good to know what items on the menu are the healthiest if you need a quick, on-the-go meal, if I’m choosing to eat fast-food I’m in it to win it. Food critic, and mac n’ cheese connoisseur, Luka explained that the most important aspect of mac n’ cheese is “the buttery, ooey-gooey-ness.” Basing it off those qualifications, Luka ranked Panera as the best-tasting. Although it is the least healthy option, Luka says it tastes the best because its thick and creamy. Blais had a different opinion though he recommends Chik-Fil-A’s mac n’ cheese because of the texture and the taste of the cheese. Plus, the recipe only has about 440 calories in an 8-ounce serving.
There’s no denying it: mac n’ cheese is delicious. While Dr. Oz takes the stance that mac n’ cheese isn’t something you should be eating on a daily basis because it’s not nutritious, he does say it’s okay to enjoy in moderation. If you just can’t shake that unwavering craving for some warm and delicious mac n’ cheese , it’s good to know the facts before you drive to the nearest fast-food restaurant.

Arby’s signature curly fries get the “loaded” treatment, which is one of those menu words that are total red flags. Here, the fries are covered with pepper bacon, Parmesan peppercorn ranch sauce, and cheddar sauce for a highly caloric and sodium-filled side dish. Ordering a snack size of the plain Curly Fries will save you 1,380 milligrams of sodium.
At Chick-fil-A, the classic macaroni and cheese side option is made of a special blend of cheeses including Parmesan, cheddar, and romano. And while it’s rather refreshing to see a dish that is under 500 calories, the sodium here again is problematic.

Spring: It’s usually a time that reminds us that bathing suit season is just around the corner. Wendy’s is taking a different approach. They recently introduced three new signature sides made with “premium ingredients” that go against the grain: Macaroni & Cheese, Baked Sweet Potatoes and Chili Cheese Fries. We can admit that comfort food is a year-round craving for most people, and to be fair, Wendy’s does offer several side salads, as well as apple slices on their menu.
But it was the calling for an extreme amount of melted cheese and a craving for brown sugar that had us take a field trip to a local Wendy’s to try these new items. Indulging in fast food isn’t something we’d recommend, but if you’re on the road and have to partake in a drive-through outing, we’re going to recommend you order certain items over others. Chicken sandwich wars have taken over social media, but it may not be the last debate youll run across. Soon, we may be fighting over who has the best mac and cheese.
KFC recently announced it would be adding Mac and Cheese Bowls to its menu.
