If you want your grilled cheese to be uniformly crispy and you dont want to stand at the stove waiting for each side to cook perfectly, cook it in the oven instead!
Its even easier and I think it results in a way better sandwich.
The right temperature will depend on the type of bread youre using, how much cheese youre using, and how hot your oven is!
I usually use plain white bread for grilled cheese and I bake my grilled cheese at 450F for about 4-5 minutes on each side.
I usually start checking it after three minutes and make sure its not getting too crispy. Once it looks how I want it, I flip it over and cook for about the same amount of other time!
If you havent tried making it in the oven before, play around with the temperature/time a bit until you find out what works for you! It might also be different for you depending on how cooked you want your sandwich to besome like it crispy and some prefer it on the softer side!
Now lets get to the good stuff
Second: Use Good Bread
Any grilled cheese will only be as delicious as the quality of the bread you use. So when youre choosing the bread for your sandwich, go for the good stuff: Try to find a local bakery that makes a great quality loaf, and slice it yourself.
A standard bread loaf like ciabatta or a baguette works with just about every cheese. A heartier rye bread will stand out, so youll need to pair it with a more intensely flavored cheese to get the best out of it. And if you want a particularly soft and rich sandwich, almost dessert-like, go for a brioche.
Whatever you do, though, avoid using a store-bought, pre-sliced bread if you really want to make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich.

Which Air Fryer Do I Use
After doing extensive air fryer research, I decided on this GoWise 5.8 quart Air Fryer.

I went with the 5.8 quart because it’s the perfect size for me and my family. It is large enough to cook two sandwiches in, a whole chicken, or a big batch of fries without things getting too crowded.
Anything smaller would have been kind of pointless to me. It also has more temperature controls and more cooking options than a lot of the other air fryers on the market do. I also loved that it came with a whole entire cookbook and temperature manual for various foods.
How Much Cheese To Use
I find that using at least 2 thick slices, about to ¼-inch max, of sharp cheddar provides just the right ratio of cheese-to-bread. If the slices are any thicker, itll affect the melt time. If using a block of cheese, you can grate or shred it to make an even layer, although it will melt quicker than slices.
When placing the cheese on top of the unbuttered side of the bread, leave a little bit of space along the edges so the cheese doesnt spew over, unless you like a little bit of fried cheese on the edges.

For me, its easier to use a 10-inch skillet and grill just one or two sandwiches at once. Unless you have an amazing stovetop with giant burners, its difficult to have even heat distribution across a very large skillet, leaving your sandwiches with pale patches.

Heat your cast iron skillet over medium high heat. Melt a big pat of butter while its heating up. Swirl the butter in the pan to coat it evenly. Use an oven mitt so you dont burn your hand on the skillet handle. Have a heavy plate, lid or a fry pan ready so you can place it over your grilled cheese as it cooks.
Coat each piece of bread with a thin layer of mayonnaise. Top each slice with cheese & then make a sandwich. Place the sandwich in the hot pan. Let the first side cook until golden brown. Flip & do the same to the other side.
Add more butter to the pan & swirl it around. Flip sandwich again. Now you need to watch things carefully, its easy to burn your sandwich. Remove from pan when the bread is crispy & browned and the cheese is completely melted. Serve immediately.

Making an air fryer grilled cheese is even easier than making it on the stovetop!
All you need to do is to add the cheese to one slice of bread then put the other slice on top.
Butter both sides of the sandwich and put it in the air fryer.
Set the air fryer at 370F degrees for 4 minutes and press start.
When the timer goes off, flip it and put it in for 3 more minutes at 370F degrees.
After that, remove the grilled cheese from the air fryer, slice it and serve it immediately.
