Substituting the juice of a lemon and its zest for the jalapeno pepper does a fantastic job at brightening the spinach dip. Do you love artichokes? Make this a simple spinach and artichoke sip by replacing some of the spinach with an equal amount of canned artichoke hearts. Maybe you cant get enough spice? Can You Freeze Spinach Dip

One of the most common questions I get about party dips is whether or not you can make them in advance. Since its easier to prepare treats for a party the night before than scrambling to get everything done the day of the event, I can totally understand why someone would want to do this.

The good news is that the answer to this question is almost always yes, and that is the case for this dip.

In fact, you can store this dip either before or after its been baked, making it easy to ensure none of it ever goes to waste.

To refrigerate this dip: Add dip to a bowl with a sealable lid. Secure lid and store in the refrigerator for up to four days. When ready to serve, follow the regular recipe instructions for baking the dip.

About Creamy Spinach Dip

As much as I love coming up with new and creative appetizers, theres no denying that classic recipes are classics for a reason. Theyre the type of dishes that have weathered generations of picky eaters and are still made at next years Christmas party.

And one of my absolute favorite classic recipes?

Creamy spinach dip.

You cant get much more classically crowd-pleasing than that.

Tips To Make This Recipe

  • Remove the excess moisture from the spinach before using. If you dont drain and squeeze it out well, your dip can become too watery.
  • Use full fat cream cheese for the best results. Low fat cream cheese can be thinner in texture, it will still work, but the results will be slightly different. Low fat cream cheese also has added ingredients.
  • Soften your cream cheese before mixing with the other ingredients. This will make everything easier to combine. Take it out of the fridge about an hour before you want to make the dip.
  • Make it your own! You can add other seasonings to this cream cheese spinach dip, like paprika or some chili flakes for some spice. Mozzarella works great for the topping, but you could use cheddar or Jack if you prefer.

  • Prepare the spinach.
  • If using frozen spinach: Thaw and drain the frozen spinach, and wring out all the excess water. Then, coarsely chop the spinach.
  • If using fresh spinach: Steam or boil the spinach until wilted. Let it cool down for about 5 minutes, or until cool enough to handle with your hands. Use your hands to squeeze out all the excess water. Then, chop.
  • Make the dip. In a medium mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, mayonnaise, garlic, parmesan cheese, asiago cheese, onion powder, salt and pepper. Mix until well blended. Add spinach and continue to mix until fully combined.
  • Top with cheese and bake. Transfer mixture into a small baking dish . Sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top, if using. Bake in a 350 F preheated oven for 30 minutes until melted cheese is golden and bubbly. If the cheese is not as brown as you would like, turn the broiler on high for a minute or two. Keep a close eye on the broiler so that you don’t burn the cheese.

Using Frozen Spinach Makes Things Easier

Frozen chopped spinach is a convenient ingredient to use in this dip. This type of green is often sold in 9 to 10-ounce bags or compressed boxes, either size will work. Manufacturers have already briefly cooked or blanched the leaves to help wilt them down. That process keeps the leaves green and prolongs the freshness when frozen.

Can You Use Fresh Spinach Instead Of Frozen

Yes, fresh spinach can be substituted for frozen spinach. You will need 8 ounces of fresh leaves. Make sure to briefly cook the spinach to wilt the leaves. I recommend steaming or blanching, then chilling in an ice water bath to immediately stop the cooking process. Squeeze out the excess water, then chop.

    Cream Cheese Spinach Dip Ingredients

    • Cream Cheese The cream cheese makes this baked artichoke dip so creamy and craveable. Learn how to soften cream cheese quickly.
    • Mayonnaise Mayo is also a great base for creamy dips! Olive Oil Mayo is my go-to.
    • Sour Cream Theres nothing quite like the creamy tang of sour cream for an added touch in a dip. I prefer full fat, but if youre trying to cut back this is an easy place to do it!
    • Chopped Spinach frozen spinach is best for this recipe, I like to buy the steamable packages.
    • Monterey Jack Cheese Fresh grated jack cheese makes this dip sooooo creamy! Avoid pre-shredded cheese, as its covered in a flour like substance that helps it resist sticking and melting.
    • Minced Onion adds a subtle burst of flavor.
    • Minced Garlic I find that buying pre-minced garlic is a great shortcut.
    • Crushed Red Pepper Flakes Crushed red pepper flakes in this recipe are not enough to make it hot, but just enough to spice it up a little.
    • Parmesan Fresh grated or store bought, your choice! Parmesan doesnt melt quite like the creamier cheeses, so fresh grated isnt as important.
    • Black Pepper For a little spice!
    • To Garnish: Diced Red Pepper I add a little diced red pepper or red pepper flakes to the top for a pop of vibrant color. Totally not necessary if youd prefer to skip!
