In this guide, we examine the distinctive profile of Gouda, its full nutrition values, potential benefits, and some tasty ways to eat it.

Can I Eat As Much Cheese As I Want On Keto

Cheese is an excellent staple for the keto diet.

It is high in fat, rich in protein, and most are low in carbs. However, overeating can affect your macro ratios, hinder your weight loss, and even cause other issues if you have a sensitivity to dairy.

Because it is high in fat, cheese is a popular component of the keto diet.

Being a dairy product, it is also high in protein, and too much protein can lead to gluconeogenesis. This is when your body converts excess protein into glucose. The glucose ends up getting burned for fuel before it burns the fat, which can hinder your weight loss.

Another way that can lead you towards overeating cheese on the keto diet is when you dont watch your calories. Most cheeses allowed on Keto have some great macros, but they can also be very high in calories.

But, if you dont watch the number of calories you are eating, you can hinder your weight loss and even cause a weight increase. With any healthy lifestyle, when you are looking to lose weight, you need to focus on a calorie deficit.

So you need to burn more calories than you consume in a day.

This is also why exercising is equally as important as diet when you want to lose weight. Your body naturally burns a number of calories throughout the day, but working out helps to burn excess calories. Altogether, this means you can increase your calorie allowance by exercising, eliminating hunger, and giving you a bit more scope for shedding calories.

What Is Gouda Cheese

Mozzarella vs Gouda Dark Cheese

Gouda is a famous Dutch cheese named after the small town of Gouda in Southern Holland.

The commercial trading of Gouda cheese has taken place in Gouda for hundreds of years, and the first mention of the cheese goes back to the year 1184 .

Interestingly, traders still sell Gouda in traditional cheese markets in the town. As shown in the above image, the cheese is still sold to the public in large wheels too.

The actual production of Gouda happens in the broader region of Holland rather than in the town itself.

That said, the name Gouda cheese has no protected designation of origin. In other words anyone living anywhere in the world can produce and sell cheese and call it Gouda.

However, three specific types of Gouda have European Protected Designation of Origin status. These three Gouda varieties must be produced within the Netherlands and follow the traditional Gouda recipe.

The names of the three protected kinds of cheese are

How To Smoke Gouda

When youre ready to smoke Gouda, its best to decide what wood to use. My recommended wood is hickory , but maple and fruit woods would taste amazing with Gouda as well.

Prior to smoking, you can choose to remove the wax seal or leave it on. Taking it off prior to smoking will allow for more smoke penetration all around the cheese. In contrast, if you choose to leave the wax on, it will keep the cheese a bit fresher, but you wont have as much smoke flavor near the seal.

Lets begin:

  • Prep for cold smoking. When cold smoking, I prefer to use a smoke tube. Fill the tube with your preferred flavor of pellets. Light the end of the tube and allow the flame to burn for 4-5 minutes. Blow out the flame, and the pellets should be producing a nice, steady stream of blue smoke. Place the smoke tube in your grill or smoker and close the lid.
  • Smoke the cheese. Remove the Gouda from the wrapping and place the Gouda directly on the grill grates or use the ice modification specified above .
  • Refrigerate. Remove the cheese from the smoke, and wrap it in parchment paper. Place the cheese in the refrigerator for 2 days, or 48 hours. After those initial two days in parchment paper, vacuum seal the cheese, place it back in the refrigerator, and allow the cheese to refrigerate for another 2 weeks before eating.
  • Eat and enjoy. After your cheese has been vacuum sealed and allowed to rest in the fridge for 2 weeks, you can open the cheese, slice, and enjoy.

While looking at the grams of carbohydrates is important, you also need to pay attention to calories consumed. If your goal is weight loss, you need to be eating in a calorie deficit. It is easy to overconsume cheese and go over your total daily calories. Make sure to measure out the amount of cheese you plan to consume to make sure you dont overeat.

Whether its sliced, cubed, crumbled, or shredded, Americans cant get enough cheese. According to a recent survey of 2,000 adults by market research firm Mintel, a whopping 95 percent reported having eaten cheese within the past three months, with the majority saying theyd eaten it several times per month.

A few downsides come with all that consumption, says Amy Keating, a registered dietitian at Consumer Reports: Cheese is an excellent source of protein and supplies calcium, but its easy to nibble on and the calories, saturated fat, and sodium can add up.

An ounce of cheddar, for example, supplies nearly 7 grams of protein and 200 mg of calciumthats 20 percent of your daily calcium need. But it also has 114 calories, 5 grams of saturated fat, and 185 mg of sodium. That can put you over your daily limit if youre mindlessly snacking on a cheese plate, Keating says. A good idea, Keating says, is to stick to 100 to 200 calories worth of cheese as a snack or at parties.

    What Makes A Meal Keto

If youre unsure what to put on your plate at a barbecue or what recipe to choose for your next cookout heres what you need to know: Many people on the ketogenic diet try to stay between 20 and 50 grams of net carbs for the day. What does the net in net carbs mean? In this case, you would take the carbohydrate tally for the meal and subtract the fiber and any sugar alcohols to get the net carb number, according to The reason people use net carbs for calculations when on low-carb diets such as keto, per Atkins, is that these are the type of carbs that most significantly affect blood sugar levels.

By the way, U.S. government agencies like the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services dont recognize net carbs as a macronutrient like total carbs, protein, and fat. Net carbs is a term associated with fad diets such as keto and Atkins.

While 50 g of net carbs might sound like a lot, many healthy foods actually contain a high number of carbs and thus arent allowed on keto. For example, one medium peach has about 12 g net carbs, while a medium ear of corn has 17 g net carbs, based on carb totals via the USDA.

Your body then uses these ketones, which are made from stored fat, as an alternative fuel, according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
