How To Make Beer Cheese

How to make Beer Cheese Dip

This recipe is so simple youll find yourself making it often.

Start by placing a block of cream cheese in a small pot, and pouring in about half a beer.

Warm these two ingredients together over very low heat, until the cream cheese is soft.

Break it up into smaller pieces first, then whisk it vigorously until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Next comes the cheddar cheese. I love the punch of flavor you get with extra-sharp chedddar, but honestly any kind of cheese would work. You could use pepper jack, or swiss, gouda, or even Velveeta!

Make sure its shredded and just add in a handful at a time, whisking each addition in until melted and smooth before adding the next.

Along with the last handful of cheese, pop in some dry mustard and garlic powder to bring all the savory flavors together.

And thats all there is to it!

    How To Make It

See bottom of post for the recipe card with ingredient quantities and full instructions.

    • Shred the cheese and set it aside. Combine the seasonings and set those aside as well.
    • Heat the milk in the microwave for 45 seconds.
    • Melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and stir for 1 minute.
    • Slowly incorporate the milk and then the beer, whisking as you pour. If you add it too fast, the roux will thin out too much.
    • Add the seasonings, Worcestershire sauce, and the mustard. Let the mixture bubble gently, increase heat if needed.
    • Allow it to continue to gently bubble and thicken for about 5 minutes.
    • Reduce heat to low and let the base cool down. Gradually sprinkle in cheese and stir to combine.
    • Taste, and add a splash more beer if a thinner consistency or stronger beer flavor is preferred. Season with salt/pepper if desired.
    • Serve with soft pretzels, crusty bread, vegetables, or chips.

Beer cheese is a Kentucky favorite!

Kentuckians love to eat. As a matter of fact, we have quite a reputation for loving to eat that reaches back several generations. Primarily, we love to eat tasty food that isnt necessarily good for you, if judged by the puritanical standards that are espoused today.

Kentuckians also love a good party. And that party will have good food, be it a hopping little church fellowship hall reception with cake and non-alcoholic refreshments or a rip-roaring tailgate party at Commonwealth Stadium where, although open alcohol containers are not welcome, you can pour it in a cup or hide it in your food and get on with your very bad self!

Beer cheese is one of our efforts at hiding it in the food . Give it a try. I know youre going to be glad you did!

      Pretzels With Beer Cheese Dip

Need a perfect appetizer to serve to friends for a game night or while watching the game. I got you covered. Whats a better combo than hot, soft pretzels with beer cheese dip? Nothing.I mean the gooey sauce dipped into pretzels are just perfect for an easy and quick throw together dish. If anything pairs well with beer, its a salty snacklike pretzels.Today is National Pretzel Day, how will you celebrate National Pretzel Day? I hope its with this recipe and a cold brewsky.

Making cheese sauce at home is not difficult. Its actually one of the easiest and quickest little recipes around. There is no excuse to buy anything from a can or from a jar. Homemade cheese sauce, made from real cheeses, is the only way to go. Plus, it tastes so much better. All you have to do is throw the ingredients together, mix and bake. Thats it. Easy peasy.

If I was ambitious enough I would make the pretzels myself too, but sometimes I just dont want to be and Im ok with that. When I can get these soft pretzels and all of the other great ingredients from my local Fred Meyer, part of the Kroger family of stores, to cut on prep time, Ill take it. I also use these pretzels a few different ways besides dipping them in cheese. Cut them in half and make a delicious breakfast or lunch sandwich. You must try that too, so good.

So skip the bread and crackers and put some broccoli and cauliflower on the tray. You wont believe how quickly it disappears.

      Creamy Beer Cheese Sauce

Lately, Ive had an obsession with cheese. Beer cheese to be specific. Nearly all our favorite restaurants have an appetizer or two on the menu that come with beer cheese and OMG I cant get enough. Ive been on a mission to create a recipe thats just as delicious as the restaurants version, if not better. DONE!

My favorite part about this recipe is how adaptive it is. Want a thicker sauce, more of a dip consistency? Simmer it longer or add a bit less liquid. Want it spicier? Add more cayenne, or some jalapeno. Play around with the cheese used, use a different beer, the possibilities are endless!

Kentucky Beer Cheese can easily be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated for up to two days. Due to its high dairy content, you’ll want to avoid any type of freezing to prolong its shelf life. After one taste, we doubt this will be too much of an issue.

Tips For Using Cheese In A Beer Cheese Sauce Recipe

Your choice of cheese will go a long way in determining the consistency and overall flavor of this sauce.

There is no wrong cheese per se, just like there is no wrong beer choice. But, some types of cheese will stand out more than others. In the end, your choice will depend on the kind of flavor you are after.

      Here are a few tips:

      Beer Cheese Vs Pub Cheese

Beer Cheese Fondue Recipe (Delicious & Easy)

Pub cheese is another type of spreadable cold pack cheese that is sometimes made with beer, and the terms pub cheese and beer cheese are sometimes used interchangeably. But pub cheese isn’t always made with beer. The Presidente brand of pub cheese, for instance, doesn’t include beer. So technically, all beer cheese is pub cheese, but not all pub cheese is beer cheese.

      Beer Cheese Vs Drunken Cheese

Another product that is sometimes described as beer cheese is a version of drunken cheese made with beer. This type of cheese is a solid cheese, usually firm or semi-firm, that is made by adding beer to the curds before pressing and shaping the cheese. The resulting cheese has a distinct flavor of beer and often a marbled appearance, depending on what type of beer is used. This type of beer cheese is a solid cheese, as opposed to beer cheese, which is a spread or dip.

What Is The Best Beer For Beer Cheese

The best beer for beer cheese is a Czech Pilsner or a Munich Helles because they work well with practically any cheese and have several desireable attributes. We state this as passionate beer cheese making veterans of many years, both professionally and at home.

These two styles are well balanced, with mild caramel undertones, bready, biscuity notes from the lightly kilned malts and pleasant herbal nuances from the Noble hops with which they are spiced.

Of course there are many other beer styles that are simply wonderful candidates.

TIP: A rule of thumb is that the more flavorful the beer, the better the results.

Look for low bitterness brews such as:

      • amber German style lagers such as bock, marzen, doppelbock
      • saisons and strong Belgian ales
      • wheat ales, especially if fermented with clean American yeast
      • English pale ales, English mild
      • blonde, amber and brown ales

We strongly advise against using IPAs unless you understand hops varieties, their alpha acid make up and hopping schedules as they relate to levels of bitterness imparted to a beer.

While in many cooking with beer dishes the bitter notes of a strongly hopped bevarage can be tuned down during prolonged simmering and/or neutralized with the adddition of a sweetener, this is not the case here.

Also, IPAsare made with hops that typically bring about aromas of citrus or other tropical fruit, of pine needles, resin and potpourri. Understandably, none of these is welcome in a cheese dip.

Now, there are only a few more items that need to go into the cheese sauce and one of those is the Dijon mustard. After that, add in the garlic powder and then the Worcestershire sauce. Once again, continue to stir the sauce so everything blends together well. Then, remove the mixture from heat, and add in the mozzarella and cheddar cheeses. Only do a handful of cheese at a time until it’s fully incorporated and no lumps remain. The last two items to add include salt and pepper, and you can add as much or as little as you’d like based on your preferences.
