In one of his best essays, George Orwell described his ideal pub as a place only “two minutes from a bus stop” where people go “for conversation as much as for the beer,” with a “florid ceiling stained dark yellow by tobacco-smoke” and “swings and a chute for the children.” Sounds like a dream, right?
Alas, at the end of the piece the great man was forced to admit that no real-life public house met all of his exacting requirements. While the world is in many ways a much nastier place than it was when Orwell was writing for The Listener, I am happy to report that I have found his dream bar. It’s called Chuck E. Cheese’s.
It’s true that you can’t actually smoke inside anymore, but otherwise the Irving, Texas-headquartered family pizza chain is the genuine article. It is, simply put, the best place to have a few beers with your spouse while your kids scream their heads off amid the glittering jeweled lights of the arcade games and float leisurely in soft seas of many-colored plastic balls, while the fumes of pizza and draft Budweiser waft upward toward the heavens.
It really is a kind of earthly paradise.

City Grants Permit To Allow Alcohol Expansion At Chuck E Cheese’s
A popular childrens-themed entertainment and restaurant business in Longview can add alcoholic beverages to its menu after a 4-2 vote by the City Council on Thursday.
The Special Use Permit granted to Chuck E. Cheese’s restaurant on Loop 281 allows it to sell more beer and wine products.
I dont agree with it. I feel like it is a childrens place, District 6 Councilman Steve Pirtle said, adding that a child could take a swig of someones alcoholic beverage thinking it was a soft drink.
One resident, Magan Tyler, spoke in opposition to Chuck. E. Cheeses request during one of five public hearings held Thursday.

Lane Edwards, director of licensing for Irving-based CEC Entertainment, said the restaurant maintains a two-drink maximum for any customer over a 24-hour period, and uses barcode technology to track customers alcohol purchases across all of its restaurants.
City Planner Angela Choy said the restaurant needed the permit, because its gaming sales outpace its food sales.
Council members also approved a property tax rate, rezoned Hinsley Park property slated become a 38-acre retail development, and amended the Future Land Use Map to try keeping at least one retailer out of a Longview neighborhood.

FORT GREENE A kids paradise could soon be serving up a bit of bliss for parents too.
Community Board 2s health committee on Wednesday voted in favor of a beer and wine license application for the Chuck E. Cheeses at Atlantic Terminal despite concern from some members who were hesitant to vote in favor of the application due to several recent security issues at the mall.
There are and there have been a history of security issues and concerns at that location having nothing to do with Chuck E. Cheeses, and then some with Chuck E. Cheeses, said board member John Harrison.
There have been more than a few times over the last five years in which young teenagers in large groups have had issues, and theyre not necessarily patrons of the mall or Chuck E. Cheese, but they are in and around .
One corner behind the mall was once home to an organized fight club in which dozens of kids gathered for daytime brawls organized on social media, according to police and residents.
Lou Dagindeau, general manager for the Atlantic Terminal Chuck E. Cheeses, said he has three security guards patrolling the restaurant during peak hours, including three guards present between 5 and 11 p.m. due to overlapping shifts.
We do have security, we have three security guards on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for various hours, starting from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., Dagindeau said at Wednesday’s meeting.
The beer and wine options vary from location to location, Linn said.

Mayfield Heights City Council voted Monday to object to a liquor license renewal for Chuck E. Cheese at Golden Gate Shopping Center.
MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — Based on an opinion from Law Director Paul Murphy, City Council elected Monday to object to the renewal of a liquor license for Chuck E. Cheese at the Golden Gate Shopping Center.
The Ohio Department of Commerces Liquor Control Division had requested a response from City Council about the renewal, as it does from any community when a license is about to expire.
The renewal is being sought by CEC Entertainment LLC of Irving, Texas, which operates more than 550 Chuck E. Cheese restaurants across the country. Best known as a location for childrens birthday parties, the business features arcade-style and skill-oriented games and live entertainment.
Its menu features pizzas, wings, appetizers, salads and desserts. And beer and wine at select locations.
I have reviewed the facts, and have especially reviewed the police reports from the past six years, Murphy wrote in his opinion to council, which indicate numerous fights , the use of foul language and other things, and related incidents providing evidence the proprietor may be operating in disregard of local laws, regulation and local ordinances.
Murphy told council that the city should present as evidence only incidents that were alcohol-related. He will work with the police department to put together a case.

So I took my kids, 2 1/2 and 6 to this Chuck E. Cheese. They have been before to the Tuscaloosa location and had a blast. I have not been to one since the 90s. I now remember why. Several of the machines either did not work, did not have tickets for the kids, or simply did not appeal. Other than the friendly staff, the place was outdated with the exception of the dance floor. Chuck E. only came out once briefly when we arrived. After only about 20 minutes the kids had already gone through all the games and were starting to get frustrated with the fact that some of the machines didn’t work properly. I can check this off the list of things to do with the kids. Definitely not what it used to be.

Chuck E Cheese Alcohol A Bad Mix Say Protesters
Debbie Sudano and Jackie Aburn say that rides, games, children, Chuck E. Cheese and alcohol don’t mix.
They appeared before the Baltimore County liquor board yesterday, hoping to persuade the panel not to renew the beer and wine license of the popular Chuck E. Cheese family restaurant in Essex.
Restaurant officials said they didn’t know what all the fuss was about, but they voluntarily agreed to suspend alcohol sales for 120 days to give residents time to express their opinions.
Chuck E. Cheese, a national chain based in the Dallas area, offers its young clientele games, rides, pizza and sandwiches. Its restaurants are popular sites for children’s birthday parties, which is what bothered the protesters.
“Most parents aren’t going to serve alcohol at parties at home for their young children. I know I don’t,” Mrs. Sudano told the liquor board. “So why must children and parents who want to have birthday parties at Chuck E. Cheese be subjected to alcohol around them?”
Mrs. Sudano, who lives nearby and brought petitions with several hundred signatures from concerned parents, said she took her children to Chuck E. Cheese but decided not to return when she learned the restaurant served alcohol.
Richard T. Huston, executive vice president of ShowBiz Pizza Time Inc., Chuck E. Cheese’s parent company, volunteered to suspend the sale of alcohol for 120 days, beginning May 1, to allow time to survey residents.
The protesters wanted nothing short of a revoked license.
Flint Township Chuck E Cheese Amends Liquor License But Says It Still Won’t Sell Alcohol
FLINT TOWNSHIP, Michigan — The alcohol may flow again at a local Chuck E. Cheese’s that was the site of a brawl last year — it just isn’t selling any now.The Flint Township Board on Monday voted to approve the request from Chuck E. Cheese’s owners to change its license so it can now sell only beer and wine.
A company spokeswoman said the restaurant is not selling alcohol now, nor does it plan to in the near future. But it decided to keep the license just in case it changes its mind.
“This license is significantly cheaper,” said CEC Entertainment spokeswoman Brenda Holloway.
The restaurant that is billed as kid-friendly voluntarily stopped selling alcohol after the nationally publicized battle in January 2008. The fight included as many as 80 people, and alcohol was believed to be a factor.
In the first 11 months after it stopped selling alcohol, township police responded to complaints only a dozen times. That was down from about 40 in the year before. Some people don’t want the restaurant to ever serve alcohol again.
“I don’t feel the need,” said township resident Pam Luna. “It’s a kid’s place. They’ve had a lot of problems in the past.”
The township does not have the authority to revoke a liquor license — only the state can, Township Clerk Kim Courts said. The measure passed 6-1 with Trustee Belenda Parker dissenting.
About 70 percent of Chuck E. Cheese’s 541 national locales sell alcohol.
There have been other problems with the chain in the past.

Jimenez says the fight began because one person was looking at them and instigating a problem then they went up to them and their families got involved.
