The coronavirus pandemic could spell the end of Chuck E. Cheese. The popular kids restaurant had to close its 610 locations nationwide during the outbreak. Now, $1 billion in debt has Chuck E. Cheeses parent company, CEC Entertainment, approaching bankruptcy.

The Wall Street Journal reports that CEC is asking lenders for a $200 million to keep its business going. For comparison, the news is similar to the recent circumstances that led to the retail band JC Penney filing bankruptcy last month.

CEC has also offered its top executives retention bonuses to try and keep them from leaving, including $3 million to three of its executives, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The news comes after CEC admitted in April it was considering refinancing, restructuring, or even bankruptcy following the coronavirus pandemic given how much the restaurant industry has struggled. This after Chuck E. Cheese laid off 17,000 employees in March.

Chuck E. Cheeses website currently lists three locations in the Cleveland area, including one in Parma, one in North Olmsted and one in Mayfield Heights.

Long before the first Pizza Time Theatre had opened its doors, Bushnell had purchased the character costume that would eventually evolve into the Chuck we all know and love today. But it wasn’t a mouse, or even a rat costume, that Bushnell believed he was buying. Bushnell’s original concept was called “Coyote Pizza,” so imagine his surprise when the costume that arrived in the mail after a visit to an amusement show was in fact a life sized, gray rat costume instead. His co-workers at Atari embraced the character they began to refer to as “Rick Rat,” making him an unofficial company mascot.

Rick Rat hung out at Atari outings, and in the corner of Bushnell’s office, until Pizza Time Theatre was ready to come to fruition. Wisely deciding that a rat might not carry the best connotations for a restaurant chain, Rick Rat’s name was changed to “Chuck Entertainment Cheese,” or Chuck E. Cheese for short.

The revenue of Chuck E. Cheese in 2019 was approximately $912.87 million, slightly higher compared to $896.07 million revenue in 2018. Moreover, the average annual sales per Chuck E. Cheeses location worldwide was approximately $1.62 million in 2019 and $1.59 million in 2018. The company had over 15,000 employees and had more than 600 locations around the world.

The pandemic placed a significant financial burden on the company, prompting the parent company to declare bankruptcy. Although the restaurant chain was already struggling prior, the pandemics prolonged closures were the final straw.

With $12 billion in outstanding debt, its probable that all CEC properties will be forced to close if the corporation is unable to achieve bankruptcy refinancing. I bring my son here about 3 times a week and every time I go its busy but the place runs on what seems to be 4 employees and now that they’ve added a buffet before 3 p.m. its worse. I’ve waited 20 min before…to cash in the tickets for a prize that my kid wants. If a game is out of tickets or it breaks down don’t expect it to be fixed asap. I really like the location since its convenient for me and they do have lots of games but they should have more employees on the weekends.More
