Arbys Adds New Ham Sandwich It Means Up To $20 Million For Hog Farmers

DES MOINES, Iowa _ A new $2.69 ham and cheese sandwich on the menu of 2,500 Arbys restaurants could add up to $20 million to the sales of the nations hog farmers, pork producers said Thursday.

Arbys Inc., a fast-food chain best known for its roast beef sandwiches, said it will promote a hot ham and swiss submarine sandwich in March with a national advertising campaign.

The menu addition could double Arbys annual purchases of ham from 5 million to 10 million pounds, something that would increase its total use of pork to 12.3 million pounds in 1993, said Lloyd Fritzmeier, president of Arbys Franchise Association. The ham will be purchased from Geo. A. Hormel & Co. and from a ConAgra Inc. unit, Armour Swift-Eckrich, he said.

The new sandwich means big bucks for farmers at a time when expanding herds have presented an oversupply problem that has been a drag on profits.

Im really excited, said Tim Rose, a Lyons, Kan. farmer who heads the National Pork Producers Council.

Rose estimated the 5 million pound increase in ham sales is equivalent to the sale of 350,000 hogs and would add $14 million to $20 million to the annual gross value of all hogs sold in the United States.

Charles Harness, a spokesman for the Iowa-based pork council, said 53 percent of all pork produced in this country now is used either by restaurants or institutional food services, such as nursing homes, school cafeterias and corporate kitchens.

According to a self-described current employee who goes by CoolDude946 on Reddit, the two menu items will be replaced by a different fried potato product: crinkle fries. “There is nothing we can do about it, it was corporate decision” CoolDude946 went on to explain.
