Lesson : Even The Biggest Cheese Doesnt Last Forever So Try To See Change Coming

Sniff and Scurry soon found a big stash of cheese at Station C, and even though they enjoyed snacking a bit of it every day, they kept paying attention. The amount of cheese kept declining, slowly, but steadily, every day. Once they realized they were about to run out, they decided to move on of their own accord and soon found another huge cheese at Station N.

When Hem and Haw found station C, however, they settled there, and quickly grew accustomed to the new status quo. The cheese fest they indulged in every day soon became the center of their lives, as they thought it was the fair reward for all their hard work. They were so preoccupied with the cheese that they didnt notice how it was disappearing, one piece at a time, and how some corners of it even got moldy. One morning, they woke up, only to find someone had moved their cheese.

This left Hem and Haw sad, depressed, feeling treated unfairly and in denial. Instead of venturing out to find new cheese, they kept returning to Station C, getting ever hungrier and weaker.

No supply of cheese can last forever. Change is always bound to happen, sooner or later. Instead of fooling yourself that things will stay the same forever, always keep an eye open for change.

Who Moved My Cheese Key Idea #: Dare To Move In A New Direction And Things Will Get Better

After visualizing his goal, Haw moved on to find new cheese. But Hem refused to budge. He stayed at the empty cheese station, angry and emaciated, and crucially, far too afraid to go out and search for cheese.

At the same time, Haws experience improved dramatically.

When you move in a new direction, you learn how to better embrace change. If you manage to conquer your fears just once, the next time youre confronted with change, youll have the confidence to move on again. Never again will fear paralyze you as it did previously.

Who Moved My Cheese Summary (Animated) – How to Thrive Even in Times of Change & Uncertainty

Two mice, Sniff and Scurry, dont overthink things. They just run up and down the corridors of their maze in search of cheese.

The way in which these two mice achieved their goal is a good lesson for us. In fact, this method of thinking without thinking can be useful when were trying to reach our own goals.

If you dont get the results you want, just try something else. Dont waste time being frustrated or angry about it.

Hem and Haw also searched for cheese in the maze, but not because they were hungry. Rather, they thought that finding cheese would make them feel happy and successful. Since their brains were more complex than those of mice, Hem and Haw worked out strategies to find cheese by memorizing the mazes dark corners and blind alleys. However, with all this planning, sometimes Hem and Haw got confused or lost their way when searching for the cheese. And whenever they came up empty-handed, Hem and Haw became depressed because they wondered if happiness would ever be attainable.

In real life, we also tend to overcomplicate things. We think too much and get attached to the status quo.

Finally, Hem and Haw found a huge stash of fancy cheese at Cheese Station C. Every day they made sure to wake up early and visit the station for a snack.

Who Moved My Cheese Summary And Notes

Who Moved my Cheese? by Dr. Spencer Johnson is a story on why we shouldnt be too comfortable in life. Johnson makes the case for embracing change. He also offers advice on how to go about it.

It is not really about cheese is it? Cheese is a metaphor for the things we want in life. Cheese can be a good career, a fancy car, a degree, and so on. Because we all want something, the book makes a great read, especially for people who feel stuck. It is a best seller for this reason.

Dr. Johnson tells the story of two little people called Hem and Haw and two little mice by the names of Sniff and Scary. The four of them live in a maze, and their life revolves around finding cheese.

Hem and Haw being humans, rely on their intellect. They thrive in complexity and like to analyze things. On the other hand, Sniff and Scurry, being mice rely mostly on instinct. They have a good sense of smell and are quick to act. Whenever there is new cheese, Sniff gets the trail while Scurry races ahead. Hem and Haw appear indecisive, and at some point in the story, their indecisiveness cost them big.

Hem and Haw being as indecisive as ever stayed put. Hem was particularly entitled. Someone had taken his cheese, and he wanted it back. He was stubborn and unreasonable. Meanwhile, Hem thought about the maze, he thought about his friends Sniff and Scurry he knew they would have a hard time getting back in the maze, but it was better than staying put waiting for a miracle.

Lesson : Dont Worry Theres Always New Cheese To Be Found The Minute You Start Moving Things Will Improve

The best part about cheese isnt that once youve found it youre set for life. Its that theres always more cheese to be found. Haw eventually got sick of sitting around, so he decided to go looking for new cheese all by himself.

Once he started moving, his situation instantly got better. Yes, he just found a few bits and pieces of cheese here and there at first, but this was a lot better than doing nothing and being paralyzed by fear. After having found the courage to move on despite your fears once, fears grip on you will never be as strong as it used to be.

Haw realized the accumulated fears in his mind were a lot worse than even the biggest challenges he encountered. Full of confidence, he kept exploring the maze, until he eventually found Sniff and Scurry at Station N, where the three of them shared the new cheese they had found.

You probably know how the story goes already but if not, or youve forgotten, heres a quick synopsis:

Two of the characters are mice named Sniff and Scurry and two are little people beings the size of mice who look and act a lot like people. Their names are Hem and Haw. The cheese is a metaphor for what you want to have in life whether its a good job, a loving relationship, money, possessions, health, or peace of mind. The maze is where you look for what you want the organization you work in, or the family or community you live in.

In the story, the characters are faced with unexpected change. Eventually, one of the little people deals with it successfully, and writes what he has learned from his experience on the maze walls. Lessons From Who Moved My Cheese By Dr Spencer Jordan

  • Change is inevitable: Whether you like it or not, the cheese will move
  • The main takeaway from Who Moved My Cheese? is that change is inevitable. Change is the nature of things, and if you dont change fast enough, you will go extinct. Hew and Haw were slow to recognize that things around them had changed, and as a result, when it came time to pivot, they reacted too slowly. Why? Because they had grown comfortable. When you recognize that things in life will never remain the same, you cant become comfortable. You will be on the lookout for new opportunities. This requires being nimble like mice. They may not have a lot of intelligence, but mice have a good sense of smell that points them to new cheese.

It helps if you notice small changes early because it will help you to adapt to big changes to come. Dr. Johnson puts it best when he says:

Smell the cheese often to know when it is getting old

The point is, you should never be like Ham, who felt entitled when the cheese wasnt there. Wisdom comes from knowing that things change and acting accordingly.

    2. Be brave: Ask yourself: what would I do if I wasnt afraid?

When you are unsure what to do, and these moments will come, ask yourself, what would I do if I wasnt Afraid? The answers you get will keep you moving.

    3. Follow the writings on the wall

Is there a strategy for adopting change? Yes, and its called the writings on the wall.
